Detailed Reviews
We had 2 nights B&B at The White Bear and were pleased with everything about it.
We were welcomed to our room with at least one suitcase being carried upstairs for us. Our bedroom was comfortable with television to watch and a hospitality tray just for us.
The breakfast was delicious with full English on a plate unless one declined one or two items (like baked beans, for instance). While waiting for a lift on our check out day, I watched the barman pouring a fair amount (More than a pint!) beer into a bowl. It was intended for the beer battered fish at lunchtime. There you are - properly beer battered fish.
We'll certainly return one day.

My wife and I and 2 friends stayed for one night in rooms 8 and 9 on Saturday 3rd June 23, have stayed here on numerous occasions, and have never been disappointed. On arrival met with a warm friendly welcome, bedrooms are consistant with the age of the building, very quirky, clean and comfortable. Ate in the Bear, good tasty food, and a delicious full English breakfast,a very relaxing stay.Very good location to explore the Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon,a win win situation.Special mention must go to Emma who goes above and beyond to give all clients a great experience, thank you all, will stay again if we can get a vacancy.

My husband & I have just returned from a short break away to the Cotswolds and stayed at The White Bear. On arriving the overall appearance of this very old pub was good. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We were shown to our room up a very narrow and steep staircase which looked as though it had just been decorated as you could smell the new paint. On entering our room no.8 at the front of the pub the room was very big but the paintwork was dirty and peeling off and in great need of repainting. Because of this I pulled back the crisp white sheet on the bed and to our horror the mattress was filthy dirty and very stained. We then looked in the drawers of the extra bed settee and can only describe the pillow in there as something that should have been in the dustbin a long time ago. The drawers were also very dirty inside. The carpet in the room was very stained too. The bathroom was fine, although again the skirting board was in need of a paint. The bulb in the mirror over the sink wasn't working and the radiator was very hit and miss to work. The rest of the bathroom was fine. It was a good shower and all the grouting between the tiles was clean. I must admit we were very dubious about sleeping in the bed because of the mattress but we did. We did take into account the age of the building but all the things I have mentioned really should be addressed as matter of priority. We had an evening meal on one of the days and that was good. The breakfast was very good too and the lady serving us was most helpful as was Luke who served in the bar. You could not fault their friendliness.

First of all I want to start by saying that the staff I dealt with were lovely, and Emma, the manager, was great. The breakfast was nice, and the evening meal was ok - however the chef was more than accommodating. I didn't have a drink in the pub, however we were staying in the hotel over night. There were little touches like chocolates on the bed, a small bottle of drinking water, and some biscuits in with the tea and coffee which were also provided.
My mother and I were sharing a room, a double bed, and on first inspection it seemed nice and clean. As we looked closer we began to notice things we weren't happy with. The drawers were filled with dust, the wardrobe door was loose, and the sides of the beds were stained. The carpets were rather grim and the bedding although most likely having been laundered, were also stained by what looked like mildew and something else.
The bathroom sadly was something else all together. I understand dust, or the odd missed mark, cobweb etc, however in the times in which we are living I expect cleaning to be the top of any hotel managers agenda. The floor in the bathroom was disgusting. Not all of it, I grant you, but enough of it to be of concern. Disgusting is a word I wouldn't use lightly, and if it was a small patch of missed mopping I could possibly have let it slide, however that is not the case. This was weeks of missed or sloppy cleaning. Yes it was behind a door, however when you sit on the toilet and shut the door, it is clear as day for you to see. This then made us wary of every surface. As we were walking down the stairs I paid close attention to the banister, and then wished I hadn't. The stairs are so steep and steps so narrow that you cannot avoid holding onto the rail however it clearly hasn't been cleaned in some time. There are thick streaks of dirt (yes it's dirt as it scrapes off with a little encouragement from a nail leaving the paint beneath) going down/up the railing.
Ordinarily I would appreciate the information book, however I would have thought this would have been put away at the moment. Judging by the rest of the room, I am not convinced that it is wiped down sufficiently well after every visitor.
My mother has been shielding for a substantial amount of time and this is our first trip away for at least 2 years. Needless to say we are cautious and cleanliness is a massive priority for us and as such we were unable to stay for the second night that we had originally booked for.
Emma was lovely when we bought this to her attention. She could not apologise enough and completely understood our concerns. She refunded the entire cost of our stay - £120 including breakfast for 2, and our evening meals too.
If all you want is a place to rest your head and you aren't overly stressed about a build up of grime, tired decor or stained carpets then perhaps this is a place for you. It's reasonably priced for the location, has a couple of Co-ops across the road and the staff are great.
If you are concerned about Covid and that the place you are staying is Covid secure, then I would give The White Bear a miss for the time being until the cleaning standards have improved.

We booked into the White Bear as visiting family in Shipston. . We normally stay in another hotel but no availability
Our room was very clean and tidy and very cosy . Room 10 . tripped on the step leaving the room but no damage done .The shower was lovely with plenty of hot water etc
We really just needed somewhere to sleep and it was perfect .
The staff were very friendly and a great selection of drinks .
We asked if we could take breakfast with us ( in a sandwich ) this was no problem at all .The lady serving breakfast was very friendly and helpful
on a fine point it could definitely do with a lick of paint and hallway stairs and carpets could do with a refresh but for £100 b & b and free parking for 2 of us it was fabulous. We will definitely stay again
Thank you

Firstly the staff at the white bear are exceptional and so friendly and helpful. They are the most dog friendly place we have stayed. The dog can come to breakfast!
The breakfast is exceptional and the building is super wonky which we love and expect for a building this old. We had room 4 a twin room at the top of the inn. The beds were comfortable and the bed linen was cotton. A plus for women of a certain age. There were toiletries shampoo conditioner and shower gel. Our room was a little tired and the shower pressure was not the best so we had a sh-bath! Thank you to Emma and all her staff for making our stay so lovely. The location is brilliant for exploring the Cotswolds and there are loads of places to eat in walking distance. Our best meal was here at the white bear.

Having recently returned from Two nights at the White Bear i'd agree as
a previous review said and it was in need of some TLC.
We were given Room 8 at the front of the Hotel on the 1st floor. The room
was a decent size and the Bathroom was adequate with a good shower.
But overall it left a lot to be desired. The Carpets and walls were quite
heavily stained Cobwebs showed that the cleaning that had been done was
inadequate.
We chose not to use the wardrobe and drawers due to the amount of dust
and a light fitting which i'd question whether it were safe.
For our comfort we had one Chair between the Two of us.
I'm afraid we wouldn't use the acommodation again in it's current condition.

So, I knew I was booking into a pub in a busy town so expected some noise. Unfortunately we were in room 10, which backed onto the rear smoking area which meant that, with the window open, a constant smell of cigarettes prevailed. It also seemed to be the staff meeting area so all conversations could be heard and at 0130 we had to lean out of the window and ask people to shut up as we couldn’t sleep. Same in the morning when they gathered at 7….. the room has no warning about a step directly behind the door and I have a bigger iPad than the television. It was clean though. Breakfast usual style. Poached eggs were great, even with the additional hair…..I only paid £100 so should I manage my expectations? Even only paying this, I wouldn’t expect to be able to smell cigarettes and be subjected to noise after midnight. Won’t stay here again.

Booked 3 rooms for family (all at the same price) - two of the three rooms were really not fit for purpose - appallingly decorated. Wallpaper peeling off of walls, broken bath panel, hole in the wall, dirty paintwork, etc. Beds were fine.
