Working at nearby Kenyon College, I was looking for a local property that I could stay during selected days throughout the Winter 2011. The Russell-Cooper House was a perfect choice.
Location: The location is a few miles away from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH and centrally located on a residential street near quaint downtown Mt. Vernon, OH. Easily walkable to local attractions, restaurants, etc in the main town square.
Property: The property is wonderful. Each room (6 in total) is individually decorated and located on either the 2nd or 3rd floor. All of the rooms include a large amount of space, a private bathroom and often a desk, sitting area or additional twin bed. Perfect for not only business travelers, but also couples and those traveling with families. An additional plus is the free wi-fi that is also available to guests.
Property Owner: Having experience staying in numerous B&Bs throughout the U.S. and Canada, the property owner, Tom, is indeed one of the best . Tom is very proud of the property's heritage and very knowledge regarding local facts, places to visit and see while in Knox County. In addition, he has been more than accommodating in terms of scheduling, rates, and my individual needs while visiting the area.
The Russell-Cooper House a wonderful choice for both business and leisure travelers. Highly recommended.

It is a very old house and it is very interesting to look at. There are 4 rooms on the second floor and 2 rooms on the third floor. We had the English Room on the third floor and frankly it was not that nice. The carpet needs to be thrown out. I think that the rooms on the second floor are nicer. We stayed 3 nights and the last night the cooling system was not on. The room was uncomfortably hot. The breakfast was ok. The WiFi works on the first floor and is not password protected. Tom, the innkeeper, seemed pretty detached. So, all in all, don’t expect too much.

Staying at the Russel Cooper House was like making a trip thru time to an era when etiquette and good taste ruled the day. Like most historic BandB's, There are no phones or TVs in the room and the stairs creak in the most lovely way from the many souls who traveled them in the course of 185 years. Contrary to other reviews however, there was no dust, mold or mildew present on my stay..and I explored the entire house. I stayed for 6 nights the last week of October. I was in town on business and since it was available, the owner was kind enough to allow me to meet with clients in the dining room at various times of the day. The dining room boasts a hand painted ceiling, an antique piano, 2 fireplaces. Lovely! There were several days that were so busy for me that my breakfast had to last me till late into the evening, and it did. Each day breakfast was a wonderful treat with fresh fruit juice served in a crystal goblet, fresh strawberries, a main entree which was different everyday, toast, turkey bacon, coffee or tea and polite conversation. My room, the Oriental room, was comfortable with 2 beds...a queen and a single. There were plenty of towels, fresh each day. The shower had generous water pressure, which I did not expect from a BandB. The room also had a hair dryer, which I was thankful for. I needed to make several special requests during my stay and I can tell you, The Innkeeper, Tom, makes it his business to be helpful and accomodating. I felt like I was staying with a wonderful relative. The housekeeping staff headed by Bertha was very friendly and helpful as well. I wanted for nothing. All of my clients were locals of the area. They all had stories to tell of their connection to this grand old house and the wonderful times they had enjoyed there for parties and events over the years. As we parted ways on the front porch they would stand with me and marvel at the beautiful yellow autumn tree in the front yard and congratulate me on my fine choice of accommodations fondly called the Russel Cooper House. I was very much at home in 1829, I miss it already and I will definitely stay there again. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to any traveler coming to the Mt Vernon area.

A nicely decorated B&B but smell of mold and mildew throughout expecially in our room. Thick dust and cobwebs everywhere. Room was not cleaned in sometime. Bathroom was dark with litle light but mold in shower and toilet seat was broken.

We stayed in the Colonel's room for 2 nights, and I was very disappointed in the basics that were overlooked. Yes, the house is beautiful and well decorated, but first and foremost a room must be clean. Ours was not.
On arriving I was disappointed that the beautiful exterior I saw in pictures looked neglected. The walk was unswept and untrimmed. The porch was dirty, as were the windows. The house had a very musty odor, and our room, while neat and nicely decorated, was dusty and not well maintained. There was a huge cleanliness issue in that the bathroom sink faucets had soap spatters on them, and there was mold in the opening to the overflow. Even a casual cleaning would have taken care of these two items. The toilet had feces spatters in the bowl and under the seat--totally unacceptable. The bathroom was carpeted and dirty. Carpeting instead of tile? Any surface that could be washed between guests would be preferable. The window A/C unit was filthy: The vent had visible dust and dirt on the slats, and the filter was completely clogged. Dust was visible at the tops of the drapes. These last items are maintenance issues that should be addressed seasonally. The condition I saw suggests that they hadn't been cleaned in years. I've stayed in B&Bs in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Canada, and this was by far the most disappointing experience I've had.
Money spent to heat the house in August when the weather turns pleasantly cool overnight (yes, the heat was on both Saturday evening at 4pm when we checked in and back on, on Monday at 8am), might be better spent on hiring a cleaning crew.
Tom seems to be a decent person, but he probably could use a refresher on the importance of cleanliness, maintenance, and inspection.

I booked a reservation 6 weeks in advance through Hotels.com. I recommend you call the inn directly to make a reservation because, when I called to confirm 5 days prior to my reservation, they informed me they had received my reservation but had failed to update the web, so had no room for me. Rather than contacting me or returning my money, they took it upon themselves to call around to find me a place. All good except the 'place' was a private home of a woman they'd never met and a home they'd never seen the inside of. I wasn't going to find out until my arrival, apparently. I cancelled the reservation when I heard this, got my money back, and found myself something else. I"m sure it's a lovely place (looks like it from the outside), but I don't trust them and won't make another attempt. I was very upset and was particularly struck by the fact that they didn't contact me and never apologized.

I grew up about four blocks from the Russell-Cooper House and had never set foot in it until this visit. I was in town to visit my father and didn't want to impose too much on him, so I opted to stay somewhere in town. The Russell-Cooper house is a very warm and welcoming place, and it is situated in a great location. There is plenty of what I would call safe parking on the street. The downstairs is full of historical items and other memorabilia. The bedrooms that I saw all looked pretty comfortable. The one in which I stayed more than met my needs. I would definitely stay here again. The breakfast in the morning was quite tasty. My girlfriend and I were very impressed with the whole package. Interestingly, the owner went to high school with my father, which I didn't find out until we talked during check-in.

I am not a b&b guy (I don't care for much conversation before noon) but my wife loves them. That being said, I enjoyed our stay at the Russell Cooper House. It was quaint and clean. Tom, the proprietor, made us welcome from the moment we arrived. The rooms are spacious and quiet - we had a full house but I didn't hear other guests in their rooms. Breakfast was good. My only quibble is that I would have liked more water pressure in the shower but that would not stop us from happily staying there again.

I have stayed at the Russell-Cooper House many times, and my granddaughter and I and my family and friends have stayed there as well. We love it! Tom, the host, is very accommodating--he is extremely knowledgeable about the area (and his breakfasts are yummy). And the house itself is fascinating.
The location is convenient for walking to historic downtown Mt.Vernon or to the rails-to-trails paths or for driving to the local colleges and area attractions.
I highly recommend the RCH for a pleasant getaway or for a comfortable home base while staying in Knox County.

I recently attended a class reunion in Mt. Vernon and a late afternoon event included a gathering at The Russell-Cooper House. What a true delight! A perfect setting to relax and catch up with old friends. The light dinner was perfect and staff could not have been nicer. A plus!
