Steve, the owner is awesome. Love his cats. Very relaxed, homey motel. We stayed here for a weekend of exploring Marblehead Stage Park and going to Cedar Point. Simple and cozy. The rooms are modest but comfortable, and they are clean. Thanks Steve!

We booked in here after reading various reviews. The owner checked us in and was very friendly explaining that the pool was out of action because the weather had been too cold for him to get it ready for the season. Within 10 minutes in our room we had found 4 spiders and 2 flying bugs of some description. The bathroom light was only half working and the bedside lamps were very dusty. There was no way I was going to be able to sleep knowing there were spiders so we decided to go elsewhere. I went back to return the keys and wished the guy good luck but said it wasn't for us. When he asked why, I explained about the bugs and spiders and he said we were in the country - what do you expect? Well, I expect a bug free room for one. In the end, we found a new Tru in Sandusky that was only $49 more, clean, friendly and bug free. We didn't get a refund on our stay so it was an expensive night all in all.

This family owned hotel’s very best feature is its price and it’s second best feature is its proximity to Cedar Point. Staff is excellent, the grounds are lovely with impressive six-hundred year old maple trees and plush emerald grass and I would honestly stay again in the summer season—but with ear plugs. It’s immaculately clean. If you just need to lay horizontal, this is great. The not-so-great is that there is a freight train 200 hundred feet from your head that blows its whistle many, many, many times night and day that I haven’t seen a single other review mention. The beds are terribly uncomfortable and the A/C works well but is also exceptionally loud. Somehow it smelled musty but I don’t know why because like I said the A/C worked like a champ. It lacked a microwave but had a mini fridge. Can’t comment on the WI-FI or TV because we didn’t use either. The interior is ancient but this didn’t bother me. The pool wasn’t open in June which was disappointing. Overall for the cost, I’d do it again. I’d just bring earplugs and a sound dampening machine. Despite its flaws this was probably the most memorable little spot I’ve ever stayed in and we had a blast. We honestly loved it, warts and all.

Easy on/off the road, close to cedar point, clean room, super nice staff. The owner (and his 2 cats) were amazing, had us fresh donuts each morning. Room was clean, AC worked great! Only downside, there is a railroad across the highway, and it was a BUSY track during my stay, but it didnt bother me.

This place is a throw back to the 1950's and 60's. When we pulled in I was taken back to my childhood and the places we used to stay. The places that still had great customer service and the owner knew your name when you left. This is that place! It's quant and quiet and the owner, Steve is amazing! The prices are great and we definitely will be back!!!

The 3 G's have been achieved. Great price, Great job of cleanliness, Great location. Close to Cedar Point, and all the attractions that are offered at Sandusky Ohio . The trains were frequent but I grew up around train tracks and had no problem sleeping. The owner/manager was very nice and always there.

Like another reviewer mentioned, there used to be a LOT of reviews of this place. I do not know where they all went, because they were almost universally positive. I know, because back in 2010 I booked a weekend trip at The Maples when Steve's mom ran it. I booked because it had dozens of 5 star reviews. I enjoyed it so much, that when we came back to Sandusky in 2021, I knew immediately that I wanted to stay at The Maples again. Let me fill you in a little. What this place is: NOSTALGIA INCARNATE. That is a good thing if you love authentic mid-century motorist hotel (motel) vibes. It is literally like taking a walk into a time capsule. It's fantastically well preserved and meticulously cleaned and maintained. Each of the little rooms are a different pastel color, the cute little bathrooms are all different pastel colors too. Are there dings and dents? Of course -- because it is almost all original. From the original neon sign out front to the original kidney shaped pool, this place is utterly unique. It is also less than a 10 minute straight shot drive to Cedar Point. Yes. It is directly across the street from noisy trains. They don't try to hide that, so I won't hide that in this review. Point blank = the trains are why the room rates are so inexpensive relative to everything else in the area. Remember that when you read these reviews. My husband and I had no problems sleeping through it with the room's AC on. However, this is an individual thing. If you're a light sleeper, it's something to consider. Not a deal breaker, in my mind, because after a day at Cedar Point of visiting the island, it's easy to just fall in bed and catch some zzzz's. The grounds are lovely and well-maintained, and the entire little motel is situated in the middle of a lush orchard-like environment that is down right bucolic. Don't be surprised if you are greeted right away by Al the cat, who is sweet, fluffy, and loves saying "hi" to people. Steve, the owner, inherited the place after his mom passed away. He is doing a stellar job of continuing his family's legacy. He's super nice. You can also tell that he is very passionate about preserving his family's business. The room rates are very inexpensive and yet he still offers a very nice little breakfast made up of freshly brewed coffee, juice, an assortment of fruit from the orchard next door, and donuts. Most little motels don't offer anything at all for breakfast, particularly at this price point. The Maples practically offers a little buffet of options by comparison. So, grab a donut and sit at one of the vintage patio sets next to the vintage pool across from the amazing vintage neon sign. If you can't tell, I really love this place. It's hard not to love it, particularly if you like the idea of traveling back in time in the best way possible. In conclusion, I would urge you to take what the Karen reviewers complaining about the trains or how old everything looks with massive a grain of salt. Chances are they only booked here for the low rates and didn't consider what they were really booking, which is why they can't appreciate it for what it is. Know what you're getting into here: a periodically noisy, but thoroughly unique and original, slice of Mid-20th Century road trip culture Americana. It's worth the noise (to the right persons) and a bargain at twice the price if you're into the nostalgia. FWIW: neither Steve nor Al paid me to make this review. I just really appreciate them and am shocked by the lack of reviews. They were here in 2010 when I booked my first stay here, way back then. Even my review from my original stay (which was also very positive) is missing from Trip Advisor. Where did they all go? My opinion in 2010 was the same I have now in 2021. This place is a treasure. Stay here if you want a cozy one-of-a-kind experience. I know I will stay here again if I ever make it back to Sandusky.

This was just excellent. Took wife and grandchildren to Cedar Point and happened to reserve two nights. Night one was the family room and night two was two single rooms. The room was older but extremely clean--but what distinguished it was the care and interest that the owner Steve showed my family. He is friendly and maintains the grounds excellently. I will come back and the kids are excited too. By the way- the trains passing were restful and barely heard. Good service and personality seem to be lost today-but not here. Robert Baker

Trains run constantly, cross roads with horn blowing every 15 minutes. Not nearly as clean as reviews on booking.com would lead you to think. I booked stating we would be there after midnight, and the owner made sure he talked about how late it was when we checked in at 12:15 Definitely not a place I would book again.
