The Whaler hotel garners praise for its attentive service and complimentary treats, with a pet-friendly policy that resonates well with guests, despite some reports of lagging responsiveness. Comfortable rooms boasting modern amenities and ocean views are frequently lauded, though some guests point out soundproofing and air conditioning concerns. Its prime location offers easy beach access and is a stone's throw from Nye Beach's culinary and retail delights. While the hotel's cleanliness and renovations receive high marks, opinions diverge on its value, with some guests questioning the pricing relative to the quality of services and amenities provided.

I would highly recommend this location and thought the staff did a wonderful job balancing keeping guests safe and maintaining a beautiful environment. We truly enjoyed out stay. I thought the carry-out breakfast food were good and the room was well appointed with dishes, microwave and toaster.

Great stay: Rooms were very clean, view was nice. With Covid, the modifications worked for us. Breakfast was obtained by filling out a request and picking up the bagged goodies (oatmeal/cereal, yogurt, juice, milk/alternatives and fruit). Poor/gym is by appt which makes it nice to have less people at a time. They have a chair lift for handicapped people for the pool and hot tub. Housekeeping is limited to cleaning rooms after guests stay and contacting you if you want new towels/glasses. Garbage bins can be left out for pickup. You can also request stuff. Two elevators are available. They allow cats in certain rooms which was very important to us. The beds were a little high--probably to keep pets from going under) so if you have people who have difficulty, you might want to consider something to help you like a small collapsible step stool. If you are really picky about pillows, theirs are a bit flat. The staff are wonderfully friendly and nice which made it all the more pleasant to stay and I'm not someone who needs fawning or interaction at all times so this is saying a lot.

We have never stayed in Newport and had no idea what to expect. We decided to go with The Whaler based on value, reviews, and that it had an ocean view. We figured the view would be so-so, as many hotels advertise “ocean-view” when you can see a sliver of the ocean lol. Let me tell you...we have NEVER had such an amazing view!!! We were SHOCKED when we opened up the door and saw the wonderful ocean view!! You can hear the roar of the ocean and it was just fantastic. The front staff crew were so kind the entire time!! They let us borrow a wine opener and even let us borrow wine glasses without us asking! They are still offering a continental breakfast-they give you a menu, you circle what you want, then they will bag it for you! I thought that was wonderful because it would be easier for them just to cancel breakfast, like many other hotels have, but they are choosing to still provide it. They aren’t offering room service for everyone’s safety, but are more than willing to deliver fresh towels, toilet paper, whatever you need!! We were so sad to go and I almost canceled our next reservation to extend our stay here!!!!

Stayed here for two nights in a king bed room on the second floor. Room was very clean, and most of it had been updated. A roll-away crib was already in the room as requested. The bed was pretty high and the patio furniture looked a little weathered, but otherwise a nice room, and I appreciated the keurig, microwave and fridge.

Covid procedures here were solid. I was able to fill out check-in paperwork online before arrival. They had plexiglass and hand sanitizer in the lobby and required masks. There is no daily housekeeping, but they can bring you anything you need. For breakfast you fill out a paper with your choices, and can pick it up at night or in the morning. It was actually great for a continental breakfast, and had many branded items like Bobs Red Mill, Tropicana juice, Philadelphia cream cheese, Chobani Greek yogurt.

The location was great at the south end of Nye Beach. It’s located across the street from the beach, and you have to walk down a hill to get there, but even the “beachfront” hotels are actually high on a cliff and have the same issue.

The rooms could use a little character like art, and I had to clean the crib provided because there was crusty stuff on the rails. But otherwise this was a friendly, clean and well-maintained place I would come back to in a heartbeat.

Nyllie, Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review! I do appreciate you commenting on the many precautions we have implemented during this challenging time to help ensure everyone's safety. We are working toward a remodel and expansion, that unfortunately was scheduled to begin October 2020, but will be postponed due to Covid, so we do hope you will notice continued improvements to our property as we move out of the pandemic era. I'm delighted that we can expect to see you again in the future! Warm Regards, Beki Hueth General Manager, The Whaler

We stayed one night on our coastal drive from Cannon Beach to Jenner, CA. Unbelievable value with the full ocean view at a great price. We had an excellent meal at Pacific Kitchen which is near the hotel. Upon check in, we were able to order breakfast items that we could keep in our mini-fridge in our room and have ready for the morning. We slept with the slider door open and window open so we could hear the ocean waves and smell the ocean air through the night. Due to Covid, the swimming pool was closed, but that is understandable. Also, we felt comfortable with the check-in process and the cleanliness of our room. We also had a routine of disinfecting every hotel room we stayed in on our road trip. The area was peaceful and quiet.
After check-out we walked along and hung out on the expansive beach that is right across the street. I wish we could have stayed there several days but we were on a road trip.

My husband and I spent two nights at The Whaler. The ocean facing rooms all provide beautiful views! Our standard king room was comfortable, and we appreciated the small table and chairs set, as well as the chairs on the balcony. The layout of the room is quite functional, with the bathroom area separated by a wall so that if one of us was at the sink with the light on, the other wasn't disturbed while trying to sleep. The staff were all very amiable and accommodating, and it was nice to have coffee and tea available in the lobby throughout the day and evening. The Whaler's prices are relatively reasonable, and the location is great. We walked to the Nye Beach shopping/restaurant area numerous times, finding good dining options within a five minute stroll. I would happily stay at The Whaler again!

I’ve always stayed at the Hallmark for business in Newport, but their prices are high when I’m paying for it myself. So, on a supervisor’s recommendation, I tried the Whaler, and we got a very similar room for about half the cost. And we didn’t lose any quality! We got a cute sheet for our dog, plus a treat for him, and they didn’t charge us extra to have him as far as I can tell. The room was super clean, and they are paying extra special attention to sanitizing areas for the pandemic, we felt really safe there. Lovely trip, and now I’m engaged! We’ll be back!

Wonderful July 4 weekend. The Whaler is doing a commendable job with distancing and sanitizing measures during the time of COVID, and I appreciate their efforts. With two young boys ages 2 and 4 and grandparents, our dog, the guest home was so lovely, with beautiful views, a nice grassy lawn, clean, and within an easy walk to the beach. We cooked at our guest house every night and made a fire in the fireplace every night. Such a fun getaway! With young kids, the location is terrific, as we could have walked to Coast playground a block away, and the pool and hot tub, but these were rightfully closed during this time, due to COVID.

Our last mini-vacation during these crazy Covid times. This is the 2nd time we have stayed here, and the rooms have been upgraded since. Excellent views of the ocean, and the hotel itself is right across from the beach. The facility was very clean
and staff were well versed in proper protocols for social distancing and disinfecting [only 1 family (or person) in the elevator at a time...etc.] Free continental breakfast and excellent free WiFi (I clocked it @ over 100 megs download speed !)

The staff that checked us in were friendly and cheerful and all of our interactions with staff were pleasant. The room was clean and tidy, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was updated and clean. Due to the pandemic, breakfast was served 'bag-lunch style' from an order sheet we turned in the night before and it made for an effortless, leisurely morning.

We were in a first-floor room, but the view of the ocean waves was still excellent. The outdoor patio space was clean and we enjoyed spending time watching the waves, whales, and fishing boats in the morning and the sunset in the evening. The walk to the beach is very short (just across the road) and we were also able to walk to several nearby restaurants as well.

The motel is rwo stories, however there is an elevator. There is good access for walkers if you don't mind the ground floor entrance. It's a hilly area, so you will most likely not want to take long walks from the motel.
