So many other places we’re too terrified to do business these people show it can be done.
The Travelodge in Hayle is situated off the A30 right on the outskirts of the town. Great location and really not too far from St Ives/Carbis Bay (15 min drive), Penzance (30 mins) or Lands End (40 mins).
We were a family of 4 in one room - 3 adults and one child - and it was a tight squeeze. Accommodation was basic but very comfortable. Despite being directly off the main A30, we experienced very little noise. There is no restaurant but Starbucks, a Shell garage, M&S, Next and McDonalds are all in walking distance. Hayle itself is a very short walk or drive away.
There is on site free parking but the spaces at night fill up quick. A lot of cars were parked up in Starbucks on all the nights we were there. It also didn't help that a mobile camper van was obstructing part of the car park while we were there.
Room supplies and towels are topped up by leaving the appropriate signage on the door before 11am. We had very little interaction with the staff but when we did, they were very polite and friendly. The only issue we had was a mattress cover being soiled that we didn't notice on arrival but this was replaced upon request.
If you are a family with older kids, I would recommend additional rooms. As mentioned earlier, I was just happy to have found somewhere to stay as availability around St Ives was very low and I must have had a cancellation. I have no hesitation in recommending the Hayle Travelodge if you wanted to explore this end of Cornwall.
The location for me was key and allowed us to have a base to visit St Ives, St Michaels Mount, Carbis Bay and Penzance. It was a very comfortable stay despite being a tight fit for a family of 4.
We are a family of 4 with 2 animals so room was a bit smaller than I imagined, no a/c (we weer aware but had no choice) so we were lucky it wasn't too hot. We chose the location for the availability and near attractions. Staff was very friendly and helpful, there's a Shell garage with Costa express , a Starbucks right outside the hotel, Brewers, a Costa café and a McDonalds but plenty of good restaurants near and good takeaways. We experienced a lot of noise from the rooms on the 1st floor on the first night from 4 am but 2nd night was not so bad. Rooms could do with a mini fridge for some snacks/fruit and even medication (specially with children).
I would have given this hotel a better review but the room was not cleaned properly on arrival as we could see small pieces of rubbish on the carpet and could do with an update of items. Bins are scruffy and a bit rusty, there were lots of dust and fluff on the toilet roll holder, lots of hand prints all over the bigger walls and worst of all...we found a condom wrapper under the big bed (whilst putting some shoes underneath it) which to me is quite a serious fault and shows the lack of hygiene specially in times of Covid. I was very disappointed with that specially when I know that my children could have found it.
The stars given are for the friendly and welcoming staff, the location and the fact that it allows animals only. Unfortunately the other starts were lost for the noise and dirty bedroom.
Best cooked breakfast was at Duckies cafe, and best meals at the Old Forge and Old Quay. Best takeway "The Balti".
We had a very comfortable stay, the bed was comfy & everything we needed was provided (including a fan.....thank you travelodge!) It was very quiet considering how close it is to the main road.
The hotel is ideally located with plenty of beautiful places to visit nearby. There is a restaurant over the road, a McDonald’s, Starbucks & a 24 hour petrol station which sells all the essentials.
The staff were excellent despite the challenging circumstances, special mention to the manager Emma who clearly cares for each and every guest. This gives the hotel a homely feel which is rare in a hotel of this type!
I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a nice base for exploring the area, we will certainly be returning as soon as we can.
As its on a busy section of the A30, some noise is to be expected
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate this is a budget hotel and some will say you "get what you pay for", but surely even a budget hotel has standards?
The staff were pleasant, but didn't ever seem to be on hand to sort anything out, and those that emerged from time to time seemed to be too busy to help.
Breakfast boxes are okay, but have no choice available for vegans. Our room was incredibly hot, as there is no air con here, but a very dirty hotel fan, and one of our own fans running, plus the window open did nothing to cool it down. In fact, the corridor and reception were by far cooler than the rooms we booked! When this was mentioned to staff, we were greeted with a shrug and "its the time of year isn't it? Nothing we can do about it sorry"...
The room initially appeared clean and airy, but on entering the bathroom, which stank to high hell of headache inducing bleach, the shower curtain hem was dirty, the temp control button on the bath tap was missing, and the extractor fan probably hadn't been cleaned in goodness knows how long.
The WiFi connection was terrible, so much so that the kids had to resort to using their precious data (any parent who knows, knows!) and the telly in the room had a line running through the screen.
The room itself had a funny odour to it.. A fousty carpet smell.
The bed was okay-ish.. Or so we thought... We thought we'd save the poor rushed housekeeping team 5 minutes by stripping the beds ourselves before leaving, and were horrified to find what looks like an old period stain on the mattress protector.
Simply unacceptable, and we were glad to leave. I don't even understand how travelodge can charge more than a rival company, yet not look after their guests as well. The only reason we booked travelodge is because they accommodated our puppy, but if you are travelling without a pet, I would urge people to save their money and go to the rival company across the road where guests are actually treated like they matter, and don't have to put up with substandard hygiene!
