As part of a group walking Exmoor we chose this as a base and were all very pleased we did. Comfortable, well equipped rooms and everything worked. We chose to eat in the restaurant on the first night and were surprised and delighted by the menu and quality of the food, so much so we cancelled other reservations in order to enjoy the restaurant for a second night. Andrew is a superb host, very helpful with local knowledge. The bar is well stocked and comfortable. Oh and the price was very acceptable, especially considering this was post lock-down. But do not expect too much from Simonsbath, it is in the middle of nowhere, so no night-life.

We were staying in the area so stopped by for dinner and had the best meal I’ve had in a long time. The owner was a genial host who knew a lot about the local area and was keen to share his knowledge - he was a very entertaining host and made us feel very welcome. After a quick drink in the comfortable lounge (leather armchairs and a well stocked bookcase) we were led into the dining area. The food was sublime. For a starter I had a black pudding with bacon, caramelised apple and pine nuts. I could have died happy right there. A delicious sea bass cooked to perfection followed by a lemon and ginger cheesecake rounded out the meal. A couple of locally produced ales added to the experience. It was sadly our last night there so couldn’t go back but as last nights go it was made fabulous by our visit to this charming house.

I stayed at the hotel for a painting holiday in July 2021. The hotel was still in partial lockdown, so some covid controls were still in place and occupancy was very low. I had a really enjoyable stay. The hotel is in a relatively quiet location with nearby walks and lovely valley views. My room was extremely comfortable and well equipped. The food (Chef Anthony) was excellent with use of local ingredients. Andrew, the owner/manager, was attentive, very knowledgeable about the area and good company. As the hotel was only occupied by our small group he joined us for our painting outings. Receptionist Tina was also extremely helpful and friendly, as were the other staff. I would definitely stay here again.

If you are exploring Exmoor and the beautiful north coast of Devon and Somerset, there is no better place to stay than Simonsbath House Hotel. Walking over the top of the moor and descending into the village is like arriving in Rivendell after a long time in the wild. With fantastic food, wonderful rooms, and a warm welcome this was our first visit but will certainly not be our last. Back for Baileys by the fire before the year is out!
