The Commodore Hotel comes highly recommended for its array of amenities, which guests find to be comfortable and well-kept, complemented by stunning estuary views. The cleanliness of the hotel garners frequent praise, though a few guests have indicated a need for proactive room cleaning. While the atmosphere is generally enjoyed for its comfort and the staff's attentiveness, some guests suggest the decor could benefit from an update. The rooms' estuary views are a highlight, despite calls for modernization. Service at the hotel is often described as friendly and professional, with the staff earning accolades for their helpfulness. Its prime location is popular for its scenic vistas and easy access to the sea and nearby attractions. The hotel is seen as providing good value, though opinions vary regarding room rates and food portions.

Needing a change of view and some one else to prepare and cook meals we booked a sea view twin room at The Commodore Hotel - wow! From our welcome through to departure nothing was too much trouble, and all with smiles 😊
C-19 precautions were in place and although residents and staff didn’t wear masks distancing was observed and we felt safe.
The menu remained unchanged for the 3 nights we were there, there was a good choice and desserts were particularly yummy!
The only complaint was the shower pressure, in fact I drive home (short distance) to wash my hair, which would have taken too long to do properly in the hotel room.

I highly recommend this hotel for a self indulgent break, great beach location and easy distances to explore other areas and attractions.
Can’t wait to return!

We have stayed at the Commodore many times over a period of nearly 30 years and the service has been excellent throughout. You won’t get a more perfect setting to relax and enjoy beautiful Instow. The food is excellent and the restaurant staff attentive and professional. We had booked a sea view room , which is a must for this location. The room was clean but could do with a bit of an update and we had to move things around to free up some space to put our things. ( TV could be wall mounted )Felt very safe staying here as there were hand sanitisers throughout the hotel and strict protocols in place for social distancing. We will definitely return here again .

We had a wonderful week in early September at the Commodore Hotel, in a beautiful part of North Devon. The safety arrangements during the pandemic were very well organised and made us feel secure.

Our sea-view room on the ground floor was very comfortable and we were quite happy without maid service. Everything we needed, such as tea bags or clean towels, was supplied to our door.

We had half board - both breakfast and dinner were excellent. The staff were charming and very helpful. We look forward to our next visit.

Booked this hotel as a one night stopover whilst visiting local tourist attractions (Clovelly and Westward Ho short distances away). Large open driveway to hotel and plenty of parking available. We had a friendly greeting on arrival. Hand sanitiser is provided at the entrance and it was reassuring to see how clean and organised the hotel was with regard to the Covid regulations. Our check-in was efficient. We had chosen a room without a sea view and although it was somewhat dated it was clean and had everything we needed for an overnight stay. Tea/coffee making facilities also provided. The dining room and lounge were modern and nicely decorated and spaced appropriately. Our evening meal and morning breakfast were excellent and the service both efficient and friendly. The hotel sits alongside the estuary which provides a lovely view whilst dining or enjoying a drink in the lounge.
Great to see a family run business with friendly and helpful staff who value their guests.

We took an early Spring break to cycle parts of the Traka Trail and enjoyed our first stay at the Commodore Hotel immensely: we shall certainly return. The Commodore is a very comfortable mid-price hotel, located in spacious grounds overlooking the Torridge estuary. It is not stuffy or pretentious in any way, staff are welcoming and friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. The hotel décor is simple and effective, with light, spacious and airy public rooms. The restaurant, bars and residents' lounge are laid out in a stylish, understated way. Our sea view room with balcony was large, simply furnished and also light and airy. The bed was very comfortable. The Strandfield Grill served delicious, well-prepared and well-presented meals. There was plenty of car parking and the hotel gave direct access to Instow beach and the nearby Tarka Trail for cyclists and walkers.

Impressive hotel in a great location. Very friendly and welcoming staff who have great local knowledge and were more than happy to accommodate the needs of our family group : early check in, gluten free and vegan options on the menu. The vegan breakfast is to be especially recommended. All rooms finished to a high standard and spotless with cream carpets that look new. Could use an upgrade to the showers and a fridge in the room would be very useful. There are housekeeping options, mask wearing requests and well stocked hand sanitisers to reassure any Covid wary guests. The relaxing lounge offers great views of the Taw and the efficient and professional staff make this a great place to stay.

It is clean, location is good with view and staff is kind. However although the facilities are new they are not useful enough, they could put mixer water taps since we are in 21st century. Very inconvenient bathroom, awkwardly small with no shelves to put things like toothbrush. Floor creaks a lot, you can hear noises and conversations from other rooms. There was not enough variety for breakfast and dinner. Thus it is overpriced for what they offer and price goes even higher with surprise charges like taxes that are added which were also high.

Prior to our arrival we were sent information about the new Covid regulations at the hotel. We were requested to phone them about 20 mins prior to arrival, which we did.
What a delight to be met by a friendly member of staff, who greeted us by name, took our bags and delivered them to our room. He also arranged a cup of tea on the terrace for us too.
Reception staff were all helpful and courteous too.
Our room was wonderful. We had booked a sea view and felt like we had been given one of the best room in the hotel (room 4). We had a huge balcony with a view of Instow beach, really handy for keeping an eye on the tides to enable my swim.
Breakfast was very well organised. We pre booked the night before and in the morning were taken to our table which was set out with our fruit juice and yoghurt choice. Full English was perfectly cooked, not at all greasy and very tasty.
We met a group of friends there and we ate dinner together on our second night. We had all pre selected from the menu and the food was excellent, nicely presented and delicious.

Often when we visit Instow we stay in a small B&B. Having had such a wonderful weekend break we will definitely be coming back to the Commodore next time we are there.

Thank you to all the staff for making this reunion trip such a success and for making us all feel safe re Covid.

Faultless Quality... From the moment you swing into the sweeping drive you know your stay at the Commodore is going to be special. We'd barely parked the car and the manager was out greeting us, offering to carry our bags. The Commodore is tastefully decorated with a nod to the nautical but not over the top tacky seaside. There were some wonderful prints of America's Cup racing yachts lining the corridors to our very well appointed room. Wonderfully soft duvet and a fully tiled white bathroom. All spotlessly clean and offering wonderful views across the estuary from the balcony. We had complimentary afternoon tea upon arrival with some delicious home made fruit cake and lemon drizzle to die for. Our evening meal was excellent, perfectly cooked steak and trimmings, a really good choice of food on the menu, which took ages to decide because it all sounded so good, but tasted even better. All off the staff were brilliant at the Commodore, from the head waiter to the coffee waitress at breakfast, all friendly polite and cheerful. My only criticism would be the sausage at breakfast could have been of better quality, but that's all, every other aspect of every other meal was excellent.
Overall an excellent stay and somewhere I would visit again if I was traveling to North Devon.

As previously mentioned, the hotel is in a stunning location and the views extraordinary. My wife, myself and 4 friends (2 couples) stayed for 3 nights and decided on a D, B&B deal. The food was excellent quality, the staff and owners are great, friendly accommodating to your needs and requests, a real pleasure to stay there.
I will not name any individual for particular praise but the ability of the restaurant staff to ensure the wine stock was not under to much duress, as much as we tried to do so, does deserve a mention.
