This is a great hostel - well-equipped, spacious and with a central but peaceful location (Port Charlotte is very quiet). It overlooks the bay, is just a short walk to the lighthouse and village facilities (pub, shop, hotel - not much else). While there, I discovered a couple of stunning beaches - Machir Bay (quiet road across the peninsula, then...

Me and a friend stayed at the Port Charlotte youth hostel for 5 nights in April 2017; I'm actually writing the review in the common room right now since we have some time before we leave. We didn't have a car but the hostel is located right next to the bus stop (around 100 meters away) and whilst you may...

The hostel is tidy, the spirit of the people around is good, the kitchen spacious - and everyone is quite concerned about environmental issues. A lot of information material is available for travelers and is also being recycled for more than just one usage. The keepers are extremely friendly and dedicated, probably the most important part that makes this hostel...

Fantastic location and lots to do, really enjoyed hiring bikes and cycling to Portnahaven, exploring the beaches and seeing eagles. Thanks to Karl and Lorna for helping with ferry problems and giving lots of local information. The best family friendly hostel we have stayed at.

Would definitely recommend this to anyone. There was a great variety of guests of all ages from many different countries and everyone got on fabulously. That to me shows just how accommodating this place is. I had had a real problem finding accommodation on Islay for 8 people without paying the earth for it and from previous experiences I was...

The location of the hostel is overlooking Loch Indaal. The hostel has various types of rooms with shared facilities, all kept in tip top condition. The kitchen has recently been updated and offers excellent cooking opportunities. The managers of the hostel, Karl and Lorna have been working there for 9 years, and really they are so helpful and friendly, it...

Very well run, spotless establishment. Great for meeting very helpful, friendly people. Perfect location. International eclectic clientele who were perhaps more youth in mind than body. Just a great happy experience.

If only.......this hostel was easier to get to, I'd stay all the time! A default option when on Islay, this hostel by the sea offers commensurate views but so much more. Brand new AND practical kitchen with things in the right places, and really nice communal lounge. Efficient drying room (the fan situation could be a little clearer as it's...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Port Charlotte Youth Hostel is a converted whisky warehouse of the former Lochindaal Distillery, right at the shore of Loch Indaal on Islay. The youth hostel has all the amenities you would expect. For those looking for budget accommodation multi-share rooms are available, but the youth hostel is also family friendly and provides private rooms. Facilities include a spacious and well-equipped self-catering kitchen overlooking the bay and a common room for families and groups with a TV and comfy furniture. Wi-Fi during your stay: We do our best to deliver a free Wi-Fi service but apologise that connectivity, particularly in our rural locations, can be intermittent due to the level of our current broadband provision along with high usage when the youth hostel is busy. Please be assured we are endeavouring to improve where we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding. ... more   less
