We, being two couples of moderate vintage, spent two very comfortable nights at Rose Bank Cottage whilst travelling the 'Mornington Peninsula Wine Trail' in late February 2011. Fortunately we had booked six months in advance and were able to secure our stay at this (unbeknown to us) very popular B & B.
After arriving I soon began to realise what a 'find' it was and why it was so popular. Joyce, the proprietor who lives on-site, welcomed us with an afternoon tea of freshly baked home-made cake and biscuits together with hot cups of fresh tea & coffee, served in our private, sole-use lounge room. Outside, the 2 acre garden was and looked superb in the late afternoon light through the picture windows. Refreshed, we unpacked and got ready for dinner. Each of the two bedrooms had queen size beds and a private ensuite. The rooms were enormous, and had quality linen such as Sheridan towels. Just like the lounge room, which had an open fire, the bed & bathrooms were bright and airy, immaculately clean and smelt fresh and pure. (I don't think smokers are allowed within 10 km of Rose Bank). The beds are extremely comfortable too, as are the pillows. (The absolute lack of traffic noise also really does allow the best use of the bedding and bedrooms.)
The two best restaurants in the area are within 2 km of the cottage. Port Phillip Estate is 1.8 km to the north, and the Long Table Restaurant is 1.6 km to the south. Our first night was spent at Port Philip Estate, to which Joyce offered to drive us to & from. – no charge.
The regions best, oldest and most famous vineyards (Paringa Estate, Ten Minutes By Tractor, Red Hill Estate, Stoniers, Hickinbothams and Main Ridge) are also very close to Rose Bank. The furtherist being about 6 km away.
With all these great wineries to visit, any oenophile needs the best, most substantial, start to his day. Joyce understands this and cooks up a massive breakfast of local eggs to order, bacon, garden-grown tomatoes, mushrooms. toast (multi-grain or normal), even baked beans if you dare. Before the hot food arrives at the table, again in a private sole-use dining alcove off the lounge room, there is fresh fruit and local berries to get through, muesli, assorted cereals, oatmeal, fresh fruit juice, home-made jams and preserves, gallons of top-shelve tea and plunger coffee. Joyce is over 70 year old, and as you would expect, knows how to cook the good old way. And, following the standard set in the bedrooms, the table is set with quality crockery and high grade cutlery.
It is no wonder that Rose Bank is popular. It is :-
* in a great position
* immaculately clean
* secure & well-maintained
* abounds with high quality manchester
* furnished with extremely comfortable furniture in top condition
* equivalent to a five star hotel.
