We just arrived and it is magnificent. Beautiful accommodations. Great food. Great staff. We’re headed out on an excursion today to canoe caves and go zip lining. I’m up early and alone in the restaurant, but Freddy has taken great care of me and keeping my cup filled with delicious coffee.

We stayed at Gaia 4 nights before heading to their sister property, Matachica. The rooms are comfortable and very clean, and the food is excellent. Staff is friendly and very helpful. We particularly liked Freddy, Aziel, Izzy, and Sam -- although there are plenty of others who helped make our trip memorable. Definitely do the excursions, they are worth it and Rio on Pools was my favorite. This is such a cute resort and we hope to visit again.

I brought my two adult children to Gaia to begin our vacation in Belize. We absolutely loved the location, villas, food, waterfalls and excursions!!! Most of all we loved all the staff at the Lodge especially Freddy who greeted us daily, truly invested in our day being wonderful. Everyone called us by name and could not have been more welcoming. Thank you for a fantastic time!! We will be back…

I cannot recommend the Riverlodge enough. I did a lot of research when looking for where to stay out in the rainforest of Belize during Covid-19 and cannot say enough about Gaia! This place is truly tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Felt like we were truly going off the beaten path to this resort! But with the resort's land cruisers to keep you safe - we knew what we were getting ourselves into! ;) The drive out from the airport flew by. Which was super easy by the way. Our driver was right out the front door waiting for us. Naz met us at the front desk and was truly amazing. Helped us with all of our planning and was great with suggesting which adventures to take which days - and which were not such a great idea based on weather (it rained most of the time we were there but ... its the rain forest!! Also they had a cold front come through so it was a pretty freak thing haha we made the best of it. ) Property/ Rooms: There's many different huts to stay in all over the property. I got up each morning to do my little walk, jog and explore the property - which was beautiful. The food is mostly farm to table as there's a massive garden where everything is grown, which you can also explore. The hike down to the river could be considered steep to some, so Gaia has a lift to bring people up and down. My husband and I always did the trek up and down - good exercise and got a good sweat going! You can also see so many birds and different trees on the journey down. We switched rooms mid stay only because we wanted to have a king bed for the two of us and at the time of our booking there was only one with two queens. Both rooms were beautiful. The views were stunning from each - you can pretty much see the river from anywhere - and for sure hear it. Bathrooms felt clean and newer and toiletries were awesome - wanted to take those home! No air conditioning, which was fine since we had a ceiling fan and a floor fan as well. The only complaint is that we were wet all the time from the rain, so our stuff just took time to dry since it was pretty humid out. But we did learn from a guide that the hotel will take your stuff to clean/wash/ dry etc. The River: There's a few resorts I learned on this river, but none have the view and waterfalls like Gaia. The sounds of the falls all day and night long is literally so soothing I wanted to take a recording home. The windows being open (with screens of course) and the sounds of the birds and drizzle with the river? I mean COME ON. It was beautiful. We swam the first few days of our journey. We climbed the rocks and the falls. We walked around the whole place - it was awesome. As more rain came though - the river started to swell and of course stir up the bottom. So we just watched from afar for the remainder of the trip. Food: Oh man - the food. We actually had the opportunity to meet the chef on our way back into Belize city, he was taking to journey in to go shopping. The food was amazing - not a single complaint. The Shrimp! Who knew shrimp could be that fresh out in the middle of Belize. Everything. The fresh veggies and herbs from the garden. The fresh fruit from the garden... the specials each night. We wined and dined to say the least. The adventures!: Do them. We did almost everything we possibly could while at Gaia (weather permitting and location permitting considering the boarder to Guatemala is closed due to COVID restrictions) I do NOT want to spoil them because I think the mystery of what you'll see is half the fun. But I'll just give some minor details and which we did: 1. Barton Creek Cave Tour and Zip Lining (Calico Jack's) - this was awesome. The zip lining was fine for beginners. Wasn't intimating. No repelling. The Cave Tour was in a canoe so no need to get wet. Saw the most incredible structures in this cave and we went pretty deep in!! Amazing. Then the views from the Rain Forest while zipling is a must since you see the rain forest AND the Pine forest. 2. Carcol Tour - do it. We were teamed up with Albert for this one and it was truly unreal. The journey in is long trekking though the rain forest in the land cruiser - but 100000% worth it. The Mayan Ruins and sit to behold. I wont spoil it for you.. but wear sneakers. You'll go through the rain forest and the pine forest... it's crazy. 3. Rio Frio Caves and Rio On Pools - if I recall - this was the same day as the Carocol Tour. This save was HUUUUGGGGEEE. Go. See the Gorilla. Slimb the climb. 4. Hike to Xibalba - This was my FAVORITE !! Hiked through tropical forest in the Elijio Panti National Park. It was pouring for this Journey... but Albert took us anyways! If he was game - so were we! This was amazing. We trekked through a river (which was roaring from the rain) we hiked the rain forest and learned all the trees and birds... it was amazing. Then the cave. Do not even get me started..... truly unreal. we climbed down into it... but you cannot even fathom how large this thing is from the outside. It's not the faint of heart to hike all of this... as it was very up and down and an amazing workout. I think anything can do it - since Albert was such a champion and made us walking sticks - always making sure we were good to go - not out of breath - or in need of a break. Truly a great guide .. which is obviously why the journey was so great too. We learned so much - I wish I could have recorded it in order to remember all the names and uses for the plants. I'll include photos... Overall... I would go back for sure. Would I pack my better water proof gear? Yes. We didn't think we would need it and that we would be ok with our regular hiking gear, but we also didn't think a cold front would bring in so much rain. Looking back - it was honestly what made it so much fun. We also knew we were going out to the Caye to hopefully dry off - so wasnt too concerned. :) Peaceful, beautiful, unforgettable, professional!!!!, Would go again. and have been encouraging everyone I know to go as well and stay at Gaia. I wish I could have experienced Matachica though - next time :)

Go to Gaia! It is an incredible getaway that you will never forget. Tucked into the rainforest, you really feel disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. During the day, we took guided hikes, on foot and in canoes, to explore Mayan relics in caves. We experienced the most beautiful sunsets overlooking the waterfalls from the terrace. We relaxed with great massages. The restaurant serves delicious and healthy food. It is prepared with organic produce grown onsite and offers unique flavors presented in a beautiful way. The staff is very friendly and so happy to help in any way. They learn your name on day one and know how you like your coffee on day two. The casitas are super-clean, with luxurious sheets. We will definitely return.
