Ranked as one of the top hotels in France ~ Condé Nast Traveller 2022. A place to find balance through art, nature, and the time-honored traditions of French country living, Auberge’s newest European escape is a magnificent stone château set on 2,500 forested acres (1,000 hectares). Built more than 700 years ago by the knights of Chasteignier de la Roche-Posay, this storybook castle is an idyllic retreat steeped in serenity and devoted to l’art de vivre past and present. Resting amid the tranquil ponds that gave it its name, Domaine des Etangs and its picturesque farmhouse cottages overlook rolling hills and verdant meadows in which the finest Limousin cattle graze. Food is picked from the gardens, and art is as integral as nature in instilling the sense of equilibrium symbolized by the Domaine’s dragonfly emblem.

Detailed Reviews
Celebrating our anniversary this month we have selected a number of special places including the Domaine des Etangs.
It’s location is extraordinary with spectacular views and lit out very nicely at night. The combination of rustic buildings combined with modern art gives an extra dimension to the luxurious surroundings. Pool, tennis court, gym, vegetable garden, play-ground, well-being all wonderful. We were sorry we could not stay longer. Excellent (Michelin star)restaurant. For some reason the staff is not at the same level as the surroundings or quality of the restaurant. The (female) sommelier was not up to par. Very mediocre (and cheap) selection of wines paired with the five course dinner. But more importantly not in tune and not on time. We had to wait numerous times to start eating because we had not been offered the accompanying wine. This although the restaurant was far from full. No interest either in talking about wines (even though we mentioned we had drunk a specific wine in the country of origin) or in the guests. This lack of interest seemed more common with the staff who basically did what they had to do in a somewhat unstructured way. Not what you would expect for a place of this standing.

After the lockdown, we were so looking forward to a break. We stumbled upon this hotel on a little guest collection website and how fortunate were we.
Words cannot describe how stunning this place is. I had tears in my eyes as I walked in as I was completely blown away. The gardens and the outdoor space are heavenly and there are acres to explore. We took the bikes out one day and got completely lost and it turned into one of our favourite adventures. There are numerous walks you can go on and the swimming pool is lovely too.
We stayed in one of the cottages and were provided with an electric car to drive around the estate. The cottage had every amenity one could want and a rustic/romantic feel. We had a lake on our doorstep and a rowing boat at our disposal.
The spa was lovely and the views from it were surreal. My husband and I both had massages which were great.
There were a few glitches - breakfast was incredibly slow but I imagine that was due to covid restrictions. If you wanted food in your villa you needed to order it 24 hours in advance - this is a pain especially with small children. Also, there is only one restaurant which is Michelin starred.
The Michelin Star restaurant was fab. The food was delicious and the staff really bend over backwards to cater to your needs. We went there twice and they kindly changed the menu for us the 2nd night so it wouldn't be repetitive.
There are a few restaurants scattered around the nearby villages - concierge were brilliant in arranging the reservations.
Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed the stay and we cannot wait to return. It truly was one of the most memorable hotels we have stayed at.

We really enjoyed our three days at this hotel. Our suite, Printemps, was hugely comfortable, well appointed, with fridge, kettle, glasses etc. The staff were excellent and very personable. I appreciated the cleaning staff who also regularly changed towels etc. The reception staff were first class and took great care to welcome and look after us. We had one dinner in the restaurant, a seven course tasting menu, which was first rate. The waiter was extremely diligent and helpful. I would have appreciated a more varied wine list with more choice below 70 euros per bottle and this may have encouraged us to eat again in the restaurant. Fabulous grounds and swimming pool and very peaceful. Thanks for a great stay!

We enjoyed every minute of our 3 day stay at the Chateau. We had a room in the chateau itself - there are other options on other parts of the estate. Our room was very well appointed and quite large.
The chateau is very well decorated throughout with lots of wood paneling and artwork everywhere. There are multiple lounge areas on the ground floor and every room is very inviting.
The 2500 acres of grounds are well kept and quite accessible by bicycle or electric car.
There are two swimming pools - one inside that is kept at a very warm temperature and one outside. Both are in very pleasant surroundings.
The staff are excellent and always willing to assist in any way.
The restaurant is excellent and has a very pleasant outside seating area. Breakfast was equally good and has a substantial choice of hot and cold foods.
The location in the french countryside is perfect for a peaceful stay.
If you're looking for a quiet stay in the countryside with excellent amenities than it would be hard to beat Domaine des Etangs.
Highly recommended.

We booked this hotel last-minute and were travelling with our old and ill dog. From start to finish, the staff excelled, and I can't recommend this place more highly.
When making the booking, Vera was super helpful in finding us a room that was accessible for our dog, who can't walk stairs and even sent us photos with details of the available rooms via WhatsApp. She organised lunch for us and explained that whilst the room might not be ready upon arrival, it was no problem at all if we wanted to arrive early before the check-in time and told us that all the amenities of the hotel would be accessible to us.
We had lunch and dinner in the hotel. The food is fresh, flavoursome, and superb quality, with again immaculate customer service from the friendly and knowledgeable staff. We definitely recommend the market menu for lunch which is extremely good value for money.
Our room was a guest room in one of the towers of the chateau, spacious and beautifully decorated. It was a very hot day and whilst the room didn't have air conditioning (which we were informed about when making the reservation), the room was fresh and had a Dyson Pure cool ventilator. The beds were comfy with high quality linen, and we slept well.
But what made the hotel stand out the most is the care for you as a guest. When our dog started bleeding from his mouth, within minutes there was a whole team to support us. A vet appointment was organised within minutes and Guillaume drove me to the vet and the pharmacy, then helped us find a way to cool down the dog upon arrival. Everyone seemed genuinely concerned and relieved.
Having travelled a lot with our dog, we have found it is not always easy to find first class accommodation that allows dogs, but Domaine des Etangs ticks all boxes. Dogs are allowed almost everywhere and there is a whole "domaine" for them to explore.
If you are looking for a beautiful hotel, with great food, and excellent personalised service, this is definitely the place to come to.
I only wish we would have had more time to enjoy the beautiful grounds and swimming pool. We definitely want to come back and stay for more than one night.
Thank you to the whole team for turning what could have been a fairly traumatic day into an amazing stay, and a special shout out for Vera, Victoria, Amandine and last but definitely not least Guillaume.

We spent a lovely long weekend at this chateau resort set in extensive grounds including ponds and animals. The common and individual rooms are beautifully decorated, and it feels like you are spending time in your private chateau with all of your needs taken care of. The surroundings are very peaceful and we fully enjoyed the beautiful manicured grounds. Food was high qualify, much of it local. We were able to have breakfasts and dinners outside in the warm weather enjoying the views of ponds and greenery. We also enjoyed the tennis court and outdoor pool.

It is difficult to describe this property adequately. A castle set in 2500acres surrounded by several large lakes. No expense has been spared in creating one of the most spectacular hotels I have experienced anywhere. The food in the Michelin restaurant was superb. The only mistake we made was only booking one night so we could not take advantage of all the fabulous facilities. We shall return !

This was a stunning place that was of unexpected beauty. The beautifully manicured gardens with lakes surrounding the property as a back drop greeted us, along with very friendly staff. We were shown around the hotel and then our room which was truly beautiful, clean and very traditional. The views were stunning of an immaculately well kept property. We had dinner outside with a blind menu which was an extravaganza of food and wine. We were so well looked after and wished we could stay longer. We will definitely return to this tucked away hidden gem.

What a special place! My husband and I spent three days at Domaine Des Etangs and loved every minute! Every staff member was so kind and attentive. Our room was in the historic castle and so thoughtfully and individually decorated. Each room has a theme our ours was Soleil and had bright colors and fun details pertaining to the sun. The bed was so comfortable and the housekeeping staff took great care of us. The daily breakfast was to die for! We loved the outdoor pool with views overlooking the lake and thoughtful amenities set out for guests. We had a magical couples massage in what is one of the most spa buildings I've seen. It is set in the historic Mill building and the original equipment is still there. Another highlight was the Thursday night barbeque set in the organic farm. The food was delicious and it was really fun to meet other hotel guests at the family style tables. I am a runner and the property is perfect for running! I found a great 4 mile loop where I got to run past some of the art installations My husband took one of the complimentary bikes to go exploring. One more highlight was the picnic lunch they prepared! We picked up the basket and found our perfect spot overlooking the lake. The picnic basket had everything we needed and the food was delicious. What a fun experience. Each and every staff member was warm and friendly and made us feel like part of the family.

A Stay in Paradise
If you want to escape city life, this domaine is a must! You will not hear any noises relating to cars, trucks, or planes. The only sounds, will be that of nature. Nestled in the true, rural countryside of Central France is the Domaine Des Etangs. This 18th century castle and surrounding grounds is beyond amazing! The castle itself is surrounded by lakes, streams, and rolling hills. You can choose to walk the nature trails, ride bicycles or even better, explore on horseback. In addition, you can row the lakes on canoes.
As for the rooms, they are large and updated in every way. A beautiful and tasteful eclectic mix of old with new decor. It seems any room on the property has an “outstanding view.”
The service was exceptional from the check in clerk to the housekeeping crew.
Even though meal options were limited, lunch and dinner, at their only restaurant, was available and very good.
They have many public sitting areas within the resort. All are very cozy and elegantly decorated.
A wonderful place to start or end your dinner or evening with a drink.
This is probably the most complete resort my wife and I have ever stayed at with relation to accommodations, grounds, and meals.
The only draw back, if you want to call it that, is that it is in the middle of nowhere, literally. But again, if you want an escape from city life this is actually perfect. It is paradise in the middle of the French countryside. Domine des Etangs should be your destination, especially if you are on a road trip from Paris to Bordeaux. We look forward to our return!
