This place really maintains its secrecy. No wonder it is oft frequented by celebrities including fro Hollywood. The locals are also used to it and they do not interfere at all. Visit this place if you're looking for peace and tranquility.

Dear frend09 Thank you for your review, and I am glad you too felt the experience was that of staying in a hidden gem. I hope to welcome you back at another time-- the monsoon is especially nice between mid August and mid September.

I stayed two days as a solo traveler exploring southern and central India for 26 days by car with driver and local tour guides. I stayed in a number of heritage palace and Fort hotels but Ahilya had a beautiful setting and combined history, local color and great food. I felt as if I were staying in a private country...

Dear AnnapolisMD. I'm so very pleased that you felt that you were staying in a private country home--- that's exactly the impression I and my staff wish our guests to take away with them. Please do come back. R Holkar

Right from the rooms (each room is unique as the rooms were supposedly built for different members of the royal family) to the fort pugs (yes, they have two adorable pugs on the property who are excellent company) to the absolutely delightful food (all their ingredients are locally sourced, many of them grown on the fort farms itself!) - Ahilya...

A wonderful and romantic destination overlooking the picturesque Narmada river, where you can enjoy ethereal views of both the sunrise and sun set. One word which depicts this place is - serene. Beautifully appointed rooms and excellent cuisine just add to the pleasure of the stay. The staff is very attentive, personal and charming. Its a must return to place

Ahalia Fort. A tranquil treasure. My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in February 2017. This hotel is a gem, one to enjoy and return to. We wish we had stayed for at least 3 nights. We were fortunate to stay at the Fort while an arts festival was in progress in the temple that is attached to the fort. The combination of the fort and the flower and light decorated temple nestling on the banks of the river was breath-taking, particularly at sunset. The accommodation and food and other services were superb and the whole...

There is a sense of the past about this hotel where nothing is too much for guests, where delicious food is thoughtfully prepared and served in different areas to hold your attention and to give each meal a different experience including a candlelit dinner on the Fort ramparts. Aimee, who runs the hotel, and Julia her Intern were delightful and...

Three years ago I fell in love with this place but there were definite "wrinkles" in the experience. This time it was pretty well faultless. We took the rather cripplingly expensive Narmada Suite (as an indulgent consolation for having to cancel our whole trip to India last year) and it is certainly one of the finest rooms I have ever...

If at all you want to experience how the Royals lived in India way back in the 18th century, visit and stay and experience the old world charm. The real old restored royal rooms facing the mighty river narmada, with ancient temples and traditional art festivals along with amazing food.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The majestic 250 years old Ahilya Fort sits on the edge of a cliff, high above the sacred Narmada River, surrounded by the beautiful and unexploited town of Maheshwar. The views over the river and ghats are exceptional. Replete with myths and legend, Ahilya Fort offers guests a rare chance to get off the tourist trail and an abundance of things to see and do. With the fabulous, deserted city of Mandu nearby and the famed island temple of Omkareshwar even closer, this is a place at which to spend time and relax but from which you can also explore the area, undisturbed by the other tourists – a stroll down through the town to the ghats is a must. The food is delicious and it’s all-inclusive so, once here, you pay for nothing – be it food, excursions or e-mail! The pool is lovely; terraces and shady areas abound; meals are taken in different areas of the fort; the charming rooms and tents have superb views, balconies & gardens; the weaving center here is famous nationwide. A boat trip at sundown is something you will never forget. Truly a memorable place where you could spend days or weeks! There are 10 bedrooms scattered around the premises and the rates include full board and all excursions. It is the most perfect base for visiting Mandu (1 hour away) and is just a 2-hour drive from Indore. It makes the perfect place to end or start a holiday, as there is so much to do. From here you may also visit Dhar, Baneshwar and Omkareshwar. Being a gourmet himself, your host Prince Richard Holkar has the highest standards and the food here is delicious. Staying here is like a time wrap as the village is still enclosed within the fort itself and is truly wonderful to explore in your own time. ... more   less
