We spent two weeks on Koh Chang and loved the island. But the highlight was our 3 nights at the Baan Rim Nam guesthouse. It is a charming, if a little dated, wooden guesthouse. Everything is kept simple but is done well. From the honesty beer fridge to the free canoes and the basic breakfast. Ian was away when we stayed but the staff Pui and Mimi looked after us well. Mimi has a lot of fun using her travel a translate app on her phone. So although her English was limited, she could communicate well with us. She was very lovely and organised snorkeling and our nightly boat ride to Phu Talay and Iyara restautrant on the river. Ian was super helpful planning our trip and his website is a mine of information. It certainly helped us make the most of our holiday. See you in 2022.
We loved our recent stay with Ian and Mam at Baan Rim Nam. It’s is a wonderful spot with the river at the front and mangroves at the back. The beach is just two minutes walk away. The wooden deck by the river is the ideal place to read and watch the world go. They have a few kayaks for guests as well as beach towels and mats plus dry bags guests can borrow. The beach is quiet, we couldn’t believe it was the busiest time of year. And the local beach restaurant was a lovely spot to have lunch or a sunset beer. There aren't any shops next to the guesthouse. You have to walk to the village, about 15 minutes. And you will find good street food, local food stalls as well as Crust bakery and a 7-eleven. Many thanks for a very enjoyable stay.
Baan Rim Nan is a lovely 5 room guest house located on the estuary accessed by a long private elevated walkway through the mangroves. The spacious decks offering a lovely view over the river towards the east. The outside areas are in shade most of the day and nicely catch the breeze. Most guests spent a fair amount of time chilling out on the main covered deck reading and watching the ever changing river traffic. Free canoes are available to paddle down to the beaches. If you are a party animal I would suggest going elsewhere! Our room was comfortable, with effective AC though the shower was not particularly powerful at times. WiFi was available everywhere. Breakfast is a simple affair and we usually bought fresh fruit from town that we could keep in the communal fridge along with cold drinks/beers constantly available and charged to your room. There are lots of restaurant options in town. It takes about 15 minutes to walk along the narrow road to get to the main road with all the shops, restaurants etc. We particularly liked the fresh seafood place just a few metres to the left of the junction where the fresh seafood is displayed; you choose your fish and they charge TBH50 to cook it. All rough and ready but excellent fare. The beach is a 10 minute walk down a track behind the entrance. The first bar/restaurant was our favourite and most guests ate there at some point in their stay. The highlight of our stay is the great attention to detail by Ian who is constantly available to offer help and advice, book taxis, arrange transfers etc. He is a walking encyclopaedia of everything Koh Chang and happily answers question both by email in the months leading up to your stay and during your stay. He is absolutely brilliant. We would certainly stay here again and recommend Baan Rim Nan without hesitation. …
Our 4th visit to Koh Chang and also Baan Rim Nam. Refurbished fishermen's cottage set on the river and a 5min walk from the beach. Ian has been busy and replaced the 2 decks following their destruction during the 2019 floods. It's great to have the option of lying in sun or shade. There are a choice of canoes and kayaks you can use for a paddle down the river or out in to the sea. My preference is an early morning paddle down the river just as the sun is starting to come up. There is a fridge from which you can get water/beer/soft drinks and works on an honesty system. No fridge in your room but there is usually room in the honesty fridge if you want to store anything cold. Note - the prices for water and drinks are normal shop prices - not the usual over inflated mini bar prices. Saves carrying beer and water ba k from the village. A basic breakfast of toast, museli, tea and coffee is available - also at a reasonable price. We love staying here as it is so laid back and peaceful yet only a scooter ride away from the village or a 5 min walk through the palm trees to the beach. …
Just wanted to say Thank you to Ian, mam and their staff for a very enjoyable few days at their guesthouse on Koh Chang. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the kayaking, touring the island by scooter and sunset ciocktails at the Palm beach restaurant close by. Hope to see you all again next year.
We are currently staying at Baan Rim Nam. It’s is absolutely beautiful. The entrance is via a boardwalk through the mangroves. The setting is superb. It’s built over the estuary and the deck overlooking the river is the best place to relax and watch the world go by. You can lounge on the new loungers or even jump off the deck for a swim. There are kayaks, beach mats and dry bags you can borrow. The very, very beautiful beach is either a few minutes walk or paddle away. There are a multitude of delicious restaurants nearby and a very good beach massage hut. You can buy a basic breakfast here or basic supplies like beer, coke and water. For more supplies there is a 7-11 (and pharmacy/ bakery/more restaurants) at the nearby village - maybe 10-15 minute walk away. The bed is firm but comfortable and the aircon very efficient. This is not 5 star luxury so if that’s what you are looking for maybe this is not for you. If you want something a little different and very very beautiful I can’t rate it highly enough. And as for the hosts - incredible. Ian has answered countless emails kindly and promptly. They could not have been more helpful and have arranged everything for us from minivans to snorkelling trips and laundry. Honestly, if you are coming to koh Chang look no further. We don’t want to leave. …
We usually stay in larger resorts but this trip split our time between baan Rim Nam, which was recommended by friends and a more luxury resort. Enjoyed the time here immensly. Great to be abler to chat with fellow guests in a cionvicial atmosphere. Lots of useful information form the owners too. Plus their cute retreiver Miss Brownie.
This place is not a resort and neither is it bungalows, it's not a B and B and it's hard to categorise. The extremely helpful owner says it's a home away from home and that's true as far as the hospitality, comfort and relaxation available. The clientele seems to be mainly 40 to 60 and European if that's a clue. They read a book, go for walks to the beach nearby and generally relax in the large covered area that is a highlight. If you are a bit more active you can paddle a kayak up the creek or to the beach or walk to the village about 15 minutes away. It doesn't have a restaurant but you can get toast, yoghurt, muesli and coffee for breakfast for a small fee. Klomg Prao beach nearby is long and sandy, with warm water and a few waves but it is open to the wind. We had several good swims there. After a few days, we rented a Honda Click motor scooter for 2 days and it made going to the village and the many restaurants easier. The waterfall nearby is a must, we had two delightful swims in fresh water. We did some exploring to a few nearby beaches but found our own beach to be the best. The “original” room is an all-in-one bedroom with an adjoining good-size bathroom. Room facilities are good, though a bedside lamp might have made it easier when you wake up in the dark. We did hear the people next door on occasions. Maybe that’s a worry for some. A special thank you to Mimi and Pui who are so helpful and friendly. Just one problem for us: sandflies. It didn’t seem to worry others but we had to stop sitting outside when we realized after 2 days. The property is set in mangroves which is both charming and natural but also as a home for flying creatures Surprisingly there were not many mosquitoes. I would recommend taking DEET, eucalyptus or similar spray if you are prone to insect bites.…
Had been communicating with Ian for over two years, his web site offers help for all visitors to Koh Chang and we took the opportunity to visit Baan Rim Nam in April 2019.. We spent 5 nights at this most beautiful place and didnt regret a single moment...we had previously had 5 nights at the Grand View Resort in White Sand Beach and enjoyed greatly. Took the taxi down to Ian`s place and entered paradise... The peace and solitude was sublime combined with the superb simplicity of the accomodation... The room was simple and very comfortable yet extremely clean...The bathroom was simple yet extremely clean... Whilst in Thailand you cannot ask for more. We would have coffee which was REAL every morning and then take the very short walk to Tiger Hut on the beach for our breakfast. This took us no more than 10 minutes which was a most pleasurable experience as the beach is utterly stunning.. In all the time we spent at Baan Rim Nam we only had to walk to the main road once to get cash from the 7-11 and this only took us 15 minutes each way...otherwise you never nead to leave the area where your staying unless you require a more vibrant experience. ..Baan Rim Nam may not be for everyone but it can only be described as a small paradise amongst the many places you can stay on Koh Chang. I have no hesitationn to recommend Baan Rim Nam as the perfect place to stay...and the perfect recommendation will be that i will return....many times …
We spent 6 night at Baan Rím Naam and loved the laid back, peaceful, no frills accommodations. The inn is situated in a beautiful place and we loved hearing the birds and other wildlife daily. It was clean and the beds great. We enjoyed breakfast on the deck overlooking the river, great way to start the day. Short walk to the beach and town. The staff and host Ian were friendly and helpful...and hopefully some day we will make it back - it's a long way from Chicago!!. It was just what we were looking for - a place to completely relax and get away from it all.
