American River is a peaceful, sleepy fishermen township in a natural setting. Bushwalking, bird watching and fishing, even kayaking are activities to do around here. Make sure you catch the beautiful sunrise - we loved it. The lodge is located about 30min from the ferry in Penneshaw and about 30min from the airport in Kingscote. The rooms are clean and...

We have recently spent 3 days here and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff and we found this to be the norm here. The staff are fabulous. Nothing is ever a problem for them and also willing to assist. We were fortunate to be placed in room 16. This is...

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this hotel in American River for 3 nights over the new year period. We had one of the waterview rooms in a building of rammed earth walls giving it a rustic feel. The room was spacious and clean with a comfy bed and had lovely water views. It also has a...

When I booked this hotel, it was the only one with 4+ rating. And I agree. This is really a lovely hotel. There are no restaurants or grocery stores nearby. It is clean, very professional, smiley workers, just across from the bay with lots of pelicans and black swans. If I ever go to Kangaroo island again, I'll stay here...

We stayed for 2 nights. Staff is friendly although not very helpful. Both on our arrival and departure, they just looked at us while we carried our luggage. What we found totally unacceptable on a touristic venue is not being able to serve breakfast - not even a Continental- before 7.30am although we were being picked up at 7.25am to...

Dear Adrianna Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. My sincerest apologies that we did not meet your expectations. I am at a loss in relation to your comments regarding breakfast as we are able to offer a Continental Breakfast tray to your room, the night before for anyone that is on this early shuttle...

Sad, dingy rooms with a beautiful view! Chef creates over -complicated terrible dishes when great local seafood or meat simply done could be amazing if done as our tour guides for Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours did at lunch on a grill! Changes and updates are needed to match the great location.

We stayed four nights at the Lodge and had a very comfortable and pleasant break. The Seaview room we stayed in was of pressed mud construction and a lovely and restful ochre colour. Comfortable and big with rather small shower recess. A short walkover the road to a deserted sandy beach with a large collection of birds including black swans...

We stayed in "water View" suites which had a magnificent view of the water and beach. Stroll over the road to a lovely beach - empty except for pelicans and bird life. The restaurant here is very good - both for dinner and for a very good breakfast - cooked or continental. My room had a noisy fridge - compressor...

Just a couple of nights here during our trip in Kangaroo Island. Staff very professional & helpful. Rooms' quality truly satisfactory: perfectly clean, all possible comfort, large & bright, with a very nice & open view over the bay. The restaurant can offer a lot of lovely dishes everyday, the breakfast is rich & varying. You can also relax into...

We stayed in a pool view room which also had a bit of a view through the trees of the inlet. Bathroom had been renovated bed was ok but the wooden floor creaked quite a bit. Wifi was good but we had problems with TV reception on two of the three nights of our stay. We loved the dinners and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
