This is a new hotel across from the Cavalier. We had 2 rooms, both were very clean. We had one corner suite which is worth the $ upgrade, the other room was upgraded because of Titanium status. Housekeeping was not allowed to clean during our 4-night stay but fresh sheets and towels were provided. Only one family allowed on the elevator at a time so felt safe. Signage for everyone to wear masks, all employees did but not all guests. Service on the beach was great, chairs sanitized and placed 6 feet apart. I saw Marriott assigned hygiene staff constantly sanitizing and wiping down doors and common areas. Staff was all very friendly and helpful. They are understaffed as no one answers the phones but saw new employee orientation taking place as we left. It is a new hotel dealing with covid but dealing with it as best as we can. The best part is the location away from the crowds and the beach is clean and no seagulls! Also note, the Cavalier has 4 Tesla chargers and we were able to charge there no problem.

I am so shocked to see the bad reviews, perhaps it was because they were new and still getting their staff trained. My experience this past week was truly relaxing and enjoyable.

Room: To start off, they allowed to check-in early around noon. I booked a King Junior Suite with Balcony room on the Marriott site. The only room of that category that was available was by the elevator. Since I'm a light sleeper I asked for a different room and they accommodated me with a similar room without a balcony and adjusted the price of my room when I inquired about the price difference. The room was very bit as nice with a sitting area with an ocean view room, and a sliding large door which had a glass-type enclosure for safety. It felt like you had a balcony since you can leave the door open and hear the waves. Our room was north facing and the view was nice facing the houses, however there was some construction noise since the building was still under construction. The bed and bedding were very comfortable to my liking. The modern furniture was well thought out with ease of charging your devices and storage of your belongings. The bathroom outlet by the sink had a nightlight!!

Food: We had many meals at the hotel. Breakfast and lunch at the restaurant with the ocean view. Dinner on the rooftop. All the food was fresh and the service ranged from good to excellent. We also ate at the Hunt Room at the Cavelier.

Staff: Everybody we encountered was friendly and accommodating. From the front desk, pool towel service, servers, and bell-hops storing our ebikes overnight in their luggage room.

We did not use the gym, but the pool and beach area was not busy and there was ample seating in different sections depending on where you wanted to sit.

The common area was beautifully decorated and smelled like a spa.

The hotel is located 2 blocks north of the boardwalk. So it is beachfront without any additional boardwalk traffic. However, it's an easy safe walk to get to the boardwalk.

Overall it was a great stay. I'm sure the timing helped that the hotel was not overcrowded. The only thing I would have liked to have that many hotels provide, is free fresh brewed coffee in the lobby. Many hotel guests in addition to us were surprised that they were asking for our room numbers to bill us for coffee at the grab and go area.

We have stayed twice. As others have noted, the hotel is beautiful with nice pools, grounds, and rooms. It has a very South Beach feel and there is nothing else like it in Virginia Beach. The rooms on the South side have great views and you can hear the ocean, but the balconies are not very private unless you have one of the corner ocean front wrap around balconies which are separated. The others have a clear divider but you can see and hear your neighbors. On the north side you cannot hear the ocean because of the air handler units and you won't want to open your door, but the views are still nice especially if you are on a higher floor.

The hotel is obviously dealing with opening pains, Covid complications, and seems to be short staffed in some areas. We had to request sheets twice. Our room mostly seemed clean, but we found wads of hair on the rugs that were not the color of ours. While we had two great servers in Tulus, service could be slow from the kitchen and bartenders. Don't expect to grab a quick drink or meal. There is still inconsistently available service at the pool and green spaces. We left something in the room when we checked out and a manager was quick to retrieve it.

At Tulus and especially the Cavalier Beach Club's bar there were many young servers who wore their masks below their noses, as they do at many of the restaurants in Virginia Beach. Several pulled their masks down in order to take our orders. The black jersey masks that seemed to be issued to them don't seem to stay in place and the servers were constantly tugging at them and potentially contaminating their hands. Marriott needs to train these staff better and make it clear the mask is not effective if it doesn't cover the nose and give them well fitting masks. Virginia has done well and kept its cases within reason. I hate to see practices that can undermine that progress and result in things having to close again. The managerial, front desk, and custodial staff seemed to keep their masks in place and maintain appropriate distances for the most part. There was no hand sanitizer in the gym and I don't recall any signs inside the gym to remind people to social distance - and they weren't. The cardio equipment has not been spaced out (and may not be able to). There was also no hand sanitizer near elevators, but people seem to respect the single party per elevator rule.

I will definitely go back, but hope that service and total experience soon aligns better with price.

I wish I could give this hotel a better review.
The only thing this hotel has going for it is the view and the fact that it is new.
Unfortunately, my experience here was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Firstly we arrived at 4pm which is check in time, no rooms available and no indication of timing. The hotel provided reasoning that they were cleaning for COVID which I completely understand, however it is incredibly frustrating that Marriott would not manage room availability with staff given COVID to meet their minimum requirements. After much complaining we accepted a room that we didn’t book as we had been on the road for a while and wanted to enjoy the afternoon. The manager assisting could not have been more unfriendly. Others waiting we’re doing so until after 7pm, this is completely unacceptable (pics of people waiting attached). Having spent over 100 nights in Marriott hotels the past 18 months the service level was beyond poor.
To make matters worse, the hotel was completely filled with people with a lack of covid rules around masks being enforced. The restaurant has a lovely view of the beach and the staff there are very friendly but it is clear that the management at the hotel is so poor there was so much confusion about capacity indoors and outdoors. This hotel should not be allowed to operate until they have fixed their issues with service and are better prepared for COVID. The rooms didn’t feel clean, sloppy - no toilet paper, no Kleenex and sand that clearly hasn’t been mopped. Cleaning staff on floors were very friendly but they are clearly understaffed once again reiterating my point that they shouldn’t allow rooms to be booked when they don’t have enough staff.
I will never stay in this hotel again largely due to my experience with the manager at the front desk. The hotel has potential but needs better management.

I just wanted to take a minute and apologize for all of the challenges you faced during your stay with us. Opening a hotel is always challenging, but opening during a pandemic proved to be extremely challenging. I want you to know we do value your business and we absolutely take your comments to heart and we are using them to improve. We have significantly enhanced the safety measures we have in place to protect our guests and our associates and I can assure you we take COVID extremely seriously. I hope you will give us another chance the next time you need a place to call home at the oceanfront. Dave

So I usually don’t do much of these but I feel like I had to. So to start off check in time is at 4pm and we didn’t get to check in till 5pm. Second was the elevator situation, the people who made reservations for the rooftop had elevator priority va the actual hotel guests so there’s always a long line because they hold one of the elevator doors for them so we have to wait till someone from upstairs goes down to level 1. We can’t even go up there to see how it looks or even for one drink. I’ve been here before and housekeeping has come in to make my bed and take out the trash and give new towels. Not this time. It wasn’t done, when called downstairs to get it done they only brought up towels and the bed sheets and blanket so I had to make the bed myself and for a king sized bed they gave me a small thin cover for a blanket The service at this place sucks. The only reason why I had come back is because the rooms are clean and the interior is beautiful. On top of that you have to pay $10 a day to use their WIFI and $20 a day for parking. I mean paying 500 a night I would expect everything to be included. They don’t have a covid capacity limit for the elevators there’s always so many people. It’s difficult to use the elevators because you have to hold your card to scan to press the elevator button and the buttons don’t seem to always work. The room doors are hard to open as well. They scan but are almost impossible to open at times. The balcony has no privacy. I mean you can literally hop over to the next balcony.. which to me is completely unsafe. The only good thing like I said is that this hotel is very clean and the rooms are comfortable and the hotel itself is beautiful inside.

Unfortunately my stay was not good. Let me start off that the hotel and room are very well appointed and staff was very courteous.

However, let me start with the cleanliness of my room. After showering there was water on the tile floor due to the shower head being aimed directly out the door when first turning it on, upon wiping up the water the white towel turned a nice dark gray from the dirt it was cleaning off of the floor, not very confident building during COVID. The pillows for some reason smelled like mildew which I still can’t figure out.

I had booked a ocean view room and was given a room on the 11th floor even side and had a great view of the A/c units and construction, couldn’t even hear yourself think over the running units never mind hear the ocean. The photos shows in one set of AC units there were ones right below the balcony on the roof as well. The following morning when construction started on the area outside the balcony a construction worker was so close he actually waved when I opened the curtain.

On top of that went to use the in Room coffee maker and before I made coffee I luckily noticed the creamers had expired over a month earlier which to me goes back to the care taken to clean the room.

I did make sure to take photos of all of this.

Finally when booking was not made aware of the 20$ parking then the 20$ resort fee then the 3 different taxes. Overall I could have stayed at a different hotel had a better experience and paid less. Would not return here or recommend.

I saw some of the reviews before coming here so was prepared and we brought our own water and snacks. We have young kids so are not super picky about our hotels, location matters more.

To start, the views are spectacular and you are right on the beach. The building, lobby, room - beautiful. We had great service for breakfast multiple times, but we also were there at 7.30am . We had no problems getting beach chairs (again out early).

Some of the bad: It's true the mask rule isn't enforced and multiple employees aren't wearing masks properly. We didn't do the restaurant at lunch or dinner because it was packed. For indoor dining, the restaurant is well ventilated in that its basically open to the beach. The room service menu is very small (but affordable). Holiday week so pool was packed at all times, didn't try that. No hand sanitizer anywhere (saw this in a different marriott). It was "clean" to the eye but I wiped down the balcony handle and that hadn't been cleaned.

The really bad: Our balcony high up was over the restaurant/AC unit + construction. So opening the door meant super loud noise at all times of day, and the smell of grease during the evenings - I can't justify full price for a balcony you can't use, ever. Also the first night we were there, there was a rule specifying the # of people allowed in an elevator. The other days that sign was gone - maybe we went to a new phase, or maybe it is just not possible to socially distance in an elevator w/so many people needing to go up and down.

One note to future travelers, nothing seems to dry in our room and outside is similar so bring extra swim clothes and towels.

I would echo other reviews that there does not seem to be any form of leadership on the premises. The hotel is new and nice though with not having housekeeping come daily, the carpeted hallways where rooms are located were full of sand and debris. There does not seem to be much of a sand mitigation process (2 foot washes for the whole premises) so it is everywhere.

The employees are largely college kids, with no apparent people on site during my 3 day stay that were actually in a managerial or leadership role. There was nobody to enforce mask wearing in common areas and elevators or corralling people at the chaotic, understaffed restaurant Tulu. There are 2 restaurants but only one was open. The other one (Orion's Roof) does not open until August yet the website does not reflect this. On the website, both restaurants would seem to be reasonable to dine at given that they are open air. However, given that the hotel was at full capacity (per the front desk) it was entirely inadequate to only have 1 restaurant open. Going across the street to the Cavelier, at Becca was no better. We requested to sit outside on our reservation but when we arrived they cancelled all outdoor reservations because of a forecasted storm (which never happened and even though there is covered seating) and sat us in a portico in which there were 2 adjoining tables of 20 people. We left.

Back at Tula, there was a self serve coffee kiosk with people swarming around. and no employees trying to mitigate virus spread. There was a breakfast buffet. Unbelievable and likely reportable to the health department.

This place is not pandemic ready by any means.

You could go and enjoy the beach but I would recommend getting a room with a balcony so that you can do carry out and eat on the balcony.

It is definitely the best hotel in Virginia beach, I can give that.

However you do not expect the quality of service and hygiene of its scale.

As soon as my family walked into the "standard" room, we had to wipe out almost all surfaces that we could think of. Soon I could find a piece of receipt and a room key slipped out from a formal guest stayed there, in the desk chair. Ugh. It might have a small incident that the cleaning crew might have forgotten there? Maybe.
Next morning, we decided to have a simple breakfast at a table next to the indoor pool. I was pretty sure we were the first guest that day, but the table was dirty with spots left out from previous day. I kindly requested to clean the table, and after like 15~20 minutes, a guy showed up with a spray, and a cloths(not disposable ones), asked me if I wanted him to wipe it for us. (Uh.. why are you here than?) Luckily, I had prepared some lysol wipes and managed to wipe it before he came, so I said no to him. I was afraid if his reusable cloths would contaminates its surface again.
We decided to skip our housekeeping service because I did not trust the hotel's sanitizing policy of and their hygienic level anymore.
Oh, and do not even hope for an free room upgrade even if you are a Gold Elite member. They do not give it a s☆☆t.
Have a great, clean trip there.

We were really looking forward to staying here after being really impressed in July at their brunch.

The Good:
We liked that they were a new oceanfront hotel with private beach with complimentary chairs & umbrellas, along with beach front pool & lounge area.

Both times we ate breakfast at Tulu were great & our wait staff (Montgomery 9/14 & Shanice 9/18) were both excellent!

Moldy Shower Lining & Wobbly Toilet Seat
When we checked in the only thing we immediately notice was the misaligned toilet seat. It wasn’t until we were about to shower in the morning that we saw the moldy shower lining!! In COVID times it was very upsetting - especially since they emphasize ’commitment to cleanliness.’ They came & replaced it & the “At Your Service” ‘android’ tried to assure me it didn’t meet their standards but that’s about it.

Malfunctioning Room Lock
On the 3rd night, neither of our keys worked & when maintenance showed up 30 minutes later, his master key didn’t work either! 20 more minutes someone with a tablet was finally able to open it but they couldn’t figure out how to recharge or reprogram the lock When they said it may take at least another hour to figure out I asked for another room.

Fire Alarms
After packing up & moving to another room it was 10:30 pm. At 4:20 am & again at 4:55 am the next day, we were jolted awake by the fire alarm!! There was an announcement “Sorry for the inconvenience - we have identified the source of the problem - you do not have to evacuate.” We never got an official explanation or apology. However we found out from friends who were staying on a lower floor & did have to evacuate that the alarms were set off by the rain!!

We left that day (a day earlier than planned).
