Oglebay is a unique 1,700-acre, year-round resort with exceptional beauty and abundant recreational activities. The 270-room Wilson Lodge at Oglebay features The West Spa, two dining rooms, an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, fitness center, business center and wireless Internet. The resort also has 54 cottages, perfect for large families or several families that want to vacation together. Oglebay has something for every member of the family including 4 golf courses, eight specialty shops, a zoo, gardens, two museums, fishing, pedal boats, aqua cycles, tennis, stables, and miles of walking trails.
Bottom Line: After dark, you are trapped at the hotel unless you want to spend hours trapped in your car. There are not enough food options or accommodations unless you have reservations or are willing to wait 60-75 minutes for a table. I was told I could make reservations when I arrived. I was sorrily mislead. The weekend package with Santa is not as advertised. Staff is overworked. We spent over $2000 for 3 bedrooms for 2 nights. We spent less money to rent a 3 bedroom condo on the ocean in Florida for a week.
My family and I had a wonderful time at our overnight visit to Oglebay. We stayed in the Wilson lodge which was beautifully decorated for the holidays. We also were pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was at the two restaurants within the lodge where we dined for dinner and breakfast. Our main reason for the trip was for our daughters to do a sloth encounter! The experience was unforgettable! The girls got to hold Sweet Pea, feed her and they learned so much. Susan, the zoo employee who did the encounter was absolutely amazing. It was well worth the money for the kids to have this opportunity. Following the encounter, we were able to walk through the zoo which was a 7/10 of a mile long. It took us about 25 minutes to do the loop and we saw a surprising variety of animals. After that, we attended a laser show (which was included with the zoo admission/our encounter). It was really cute- a laser show to about five holiday songs. Took about 20 minutes. The laser shows run every half hour. We also opted to do the holiday lights drive on a trolley. It was $11 per person but we felt it was well worth it. Not only did the kids love getting to ride on the trolley, my husband and I really enjoyed hearing the tour guide tell us interesting facts about the resort and the light show. The drive took 50 minutes and that was during a relatively slow weekday night. We were told that during the weekend it can take 1.5 hours to do the drive! Afterwards we enjoyed live music in the lobby of the Wilson lodge while we munched in free cookies and hot cocoa! And then to end our every eventful day, the kids insisted we take a dip in the indoor pool. They had a 1.5 feet pool which was great for my 3 year old and the bigger pool was 4-5 ft. We had a terrific time and would without a doubt recommend visiting as a couple or as a family!
This was our fourth stay at Oblebay between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We elected to utilize one of the cottages this trip and invite extended family to stay with us. We will do that every year moving forward. We had an amazing time, the cottage was perfect and well equipped for a 6 bedroom unit. The grounds here are truly beautiful. Whitetail deer everywhere you look. Christmas lighting galore! Staff is always courteous and very attentive. Requested additional firewood for the fireplace and it arrived in less than 30 minutes which the resort wasn't required to do. Love, love, love this place. Highly recommended this place to gather with family during the holidays.
We had a room at the end of the West Wing with a fireplace. The King room was a nice size, the actual bath area was a bit small, but over all extremely well done, bed was comfy, sofa, chairs, desk, fridge, all were a nice touch. These rooms were recently updated, and are very clean. Our room was a package deal which included the lights, and breakfast bar!!!best We have ever eaten !!! Nothing left out! I was not expecting the best salad I'd ever eaten to come from a Quirky little restaurant/bar at a Christmas light viewing resort . Glassworks grill certainly delivered . They were short staffed the evening we were there. We decided to give it a chance and sat at the bar. Both food and drink were served in a timely manner and was EXCELLENT, as well as reasonably priced.
Another awesome weekend at Oglebay..The lodge was awesome as was our room. We had dinner Friday night and the food was great. We have been going to Oglebay in November for the last 12 years..The decorations are awesome as is the Festival of Lights tour.
