I stayed at the Manago Hotel while in the Kona area, shopping for coffee to take home.

We paid a little more for the third floor, Room 302, and found ourselves with a distant view of Captain Cook Bay. We're bird watchers and with a small grove of fruit trees below us there were many birds right outside our balcony. Other than...More
Basic. Clean. Safe. No frills, but then I didn't go to Hawai'i for TV! Friendly, comfortable feel to the whole place which feels like you are staying at a cross among a hostel, budget hotel and guesthouse. It feels like you are the guests of...More

I can't answer your specific questions but debated the whole shared/not shared bathroom question with myself before booking to stay 2 nights in December last year. Given the prices are so reasonable I decided to go with the private bathroom. Probably if you need to ask then it is worth the extra cost :)
I had a room on the second floor. The bed was comfortable (quite firm). This is a super place to stay, the people were lovely and the breakfasts are delicious.
PS I am 64.
