I travel regularly and my partner and I have just finished a 6 week trip, staying in a total of 12 hotels. This was by far the NOISIEST hotel with the worst sleep we have ever stayed in. We had a King Room for 4 nights. First impressions of the hotel were very good, lovely reception lobby and grounds, with arrival drink. Staff friendly ams helpful. Our ground level room was on the same level as the lobby, which is where the main bar is and where the entertainment occurs. This caused issues particularly at night, as you could hear the singer/band as if they were in your room. The laundry room also on our level a few doors down- could hear the machines going all the time. Walls thin, could hear our neighbours next door and above. Every time the toilet was flushed in the room above, we thought the ceiling was coming in. Did not sleep well for the 4 nights, which was a shame as we had very busy days out and about exploring the beautiful island. The room itself was great, good facilities and clean, although if you want it serviced they ask for 24 hours notice. Didn't see the need for valet service car parking, made the front entrance to the hotel very congested and would have been quicker getting our own car most of the time. Think this hotel has a captured audience in Hilo as very limited with other hotel options in the area. Would I stay here again? Maybe, if my room was on the top floor!

Hotel's Favourite
We loved our stay here. We had a room with a beautiful room facing the ocean. We stayed 9 nights so it was a great room to return to after an adventure on the island. Our favorite person was Scott, the bartender. He's wonderful. He was super welcoming and was so fun to talk to as we had our cocktail each night. We'd also like to give a shout out to Emma in Hula Hula's. She's so sweet. IT was a pleasure to get our breakfast from her each day. Zoey, the valet, as well as the other valets were right on top of getting our car for us each day. Overall , our experience here was wonderful. The hotel's rooms need some updating, but the grounds/settings, make it all worthwhile.

Hotel has run down within a year. We stayed here 1 year ago & enjoyed ourselves. We were shocked at how gross our room was when we checked in. There was definitely mold in room 303. My asthma was bad. I know the hotel is old but this stay was definitely not work the cost.

The rooms were clean and updated. We had a two bed room and when you take a shower you have to close the curtain in the bathroom or the other people in your room can see into the bathroom. Not a big deal but odd. The hotel shows it's age in the hallways where the pipes in the ceiling are visible. We had an ocean view but also a view of a couple dilapidated closed properties next to the hotel. Not the Grand Vanilla's fault. We were there for about 16 hours in total, just a place to sleep while we explored the other side of the island. We did not use the pool but it is quite small, similar to a personal pool on someone's property. No jacuzzi noted. Restaurant on site but menu limited and quality average at best.

The location was great, and the views are beautiful. In many ways, this is a great place to stay. But if your room has a door connecting it to an adjoining room, ask to switch to one that does not. We could hear every sound from next door, every conversation, every middle of the night YouTube video, as loudly as if it was taking place in our own room.

This “tired” hotel is being renovated (thank heavens) so be sure to ask for renovated room. That being said the A/C is clunky and noisy and our room did not have windows that open — great view though (floor to ceiling glass) of the Hilo Bay. The staff are great and the lobby bar is lively and inviting. We stayed one night and the entertainment in the lobby bar was really great (singers, musicians, hula dancers) and the crowd was friendly (locals and tourists and families) and the bar service was pretty good considering the crowd. The cost per night is really rather outrageous for Hilo but you don’t really have many other options.

Check-in with the warm cookie was fine. It was downhill from there. Room was barely passable, room service was often not available, QR code with hotel info was not accurate, the in-room coffee was undrinkable, the lanai (balcony) was tiny & dirty/moldy. The walls were beat up & in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint, especially the bathroom. Not at all what we expected from Hilton/Doubletree.

This is an old & tired Hotel. Mattie and the desk team were excellent, helpful, patient, as was the entire valet team. We were told that management just changed. Then the liquor license was apparently suspended (see photo) during our stay. Owner has been in ongoing discussions with the government agency holding the land lease. There are so many abandoned hotels on that street and we hope that this one can get an owner who can spend the money for needed renovations. Great people and location. They got this up to 3 stars and they deserve better from the owner/ management. The sounds of waves over the lava was a treat as well.

We recently stayed at the Grand Manila Hotel Hilo and left with somewhat mixed reviews. Upon arrival, we were told we were upgraded to a higher floor (we had already reserved a 2 queen, ocean view room). Upon entering our room, it looked quite nice and updated, but it smelled of old cigarette smoke covered with floral fragrance. The bathroom definitely had the strongest smell of smoke, especially from a panel that was in the wall right next to the toilet. If the panel was opened, the cigarette smell was far more apparent, but even with it closed, it was still quite strong (especially in the bathroom). We had arrived somewhat late and immediately went down to get dinner after dropping things in our room. This night they had live entertainment and the bar area was completely full. We ordered food at the bar to go back to our room since there wasn't anywhere to sit. The bartender was delightful and quickly took our order. While we waited for our food, I went back to the desk to ask if we could possibly be moved to a different room that didn't smell so much of cigarette smoke and the gentleman at the counter said, "ma'am, this is a non-smoking establishment. I will have management send out a text reminder to all the patrons that they are not allowed to smoke in the building, and I will have someone go to that floor and patrol it to make sure no one is smoking." I tried explaining that this smells like old cigarette smoke. That perhaps this hotel did once allow smoking and we were in one of the rooms that did previously allow this? I explained that it definitely smells like old smoke that has been there for years that they've tried to cover up, that the whole room smelled like smoke, and that it didn't smell like someone who just quickly lit a cigarette in the hall. I explained that our son has asthma and one of his big triggers are any kind of smoke (cigarette, bon fire/fire, etc), and I just didn't want him to have any issues in the middle of our trip. Again, I was told, "This is a non-smoking facility." He wouldn't say there weren't any other rooms available, and he definitely wasn't going to let us change if there were. While at the counter, I also explained that our deadbolt to our room didn't work, and we would much prefer a room with more security that just the key card. His response to this was, "but the key card works?" to which I replied, "Yes, but we can't lock the door with the deadbolt." He proceeded to tell me there wasn't anything he could do about the deadbolt that night, and that he would have maintenance look at it "later". I understand that this is currently a non-smoking hotel, so all their rooms are considered, "non-smoking", but I even would have been less upset if he would have simply said, "I'm so sorry, but we're completely full, and I don't have anywhere else to move you", but simply telling me he would have "someone patrol the floor" when I told him it smelled like years of old smoke felt like some gaslighting at it's finest. Also, the fact that our safely was completely disregarded was a complete fail in my book. On a positive note, our view was beautiful and the pulled pork sandwich for dinner was delicious.

We had two rooms to accommodate four family members over 3 nights at this hotel, both ocean view king rooms. They were in two different wings of the hotel and were of 2 different standards - one clean, fresh and quite modern and the other quite a bit more tired. Everything was clean but check-in was a bit difficult because the open lobby backs right onto the bar where there is live music and entertainment - which is a nice thing to have, but made it very difficult to communicate with the check-in agent. We resorted to writing things down… The rooms’ noise insulation isn’t too great either, so the music from the wide open bar is intrusive. The hotel was busy when we were there, and the weather was terrible (wet and windy) so the outdoor area of the bar was unusable, meaning that the inside of the bar was rammed full. We ended up back in our rooms for the evening, listening to the music from there. The ‘resort fee’ does cover a lot, however - some drinks at the bar, valet parking, golf etc. all quite useful things. The location is convenient and the room views were really nice across the bay. Beds were comfortable and a/c effective and not too noisy. If I could give 3.5 stars I would - 3 is a bit harsh, but 4 is a bit too much.
