The website for this hotel is deceiving. It makes this place seem like it was built from the ground up to be an echo tourist paradise, but in reality it's a fairly old property that just got a facelift. And unfortunately most of the dollars for that facelift went into the common areas, with the rooms only getting some new paint and furniture, and maybe some new bathroom fixtures. To be sure the place makes a good first impression when, with lots of retro-hip furniture in the lobby and stylish flooring, but spending a few nights there reveals some hidden faults. Like many old hotels the walls are paper thin, so we could hear everyone on either side of us. All of the bathrooms back up to a walkway or common area, so there was little privacy when using the facilities. During our first few nights we stayed in one of the premium rooms facing the Koi pond, and unfortunately at the time of our stay they were building a rock wall on the side facing the road, with construction noise starting at 7 am and going all day. We asked to move somewhere quieter, and they moved us next to the pool area, but that was no better, with sounds from pool parties at night and kids doing cannonballs in the morning coming right into the room. On the plus side the staff are super friendly and they work diligently at keeping the place clean. The place is certainly well maintained in that regard. Everyone we interacted with was very helpful. None of the faults with the place are things the staff could do much about. We had no complaints in that regard. The hotel location is a bit of a double edged sword: it's right across from Hilo's beautiful harbor, so on days when it wasn't raining (it rains a lot in Hilo) we could walk right out to view sailboats and deep blue water. But it's also right next to the not too busy airport, so we also got the occasional jet liner seeming to fly mere feet above the roof. Bottom line: we wouldn't stay here again. Despite being a clean facility staffed by friendly people, it's not enough to overcome the flaws inherent in such an old place. We would be better off spending more on a quieter, more modern hotel.

Honest review coming…so many good things about Hilo hotel, but there are a few negatives. Positives - the people, the community feel, the clean rooms, comfortable beds, free filtered water, free coffee, common areas, the fact that locals stay here was awesome Negatives - the area, it’s right next to a junk yard or car repair place, area is sketchy at night so walking around is not advisable, planes fly right over the hotel and while we were on the 1st floor I swear I thought the plane flew through my room, thin walls but one night a Hawaiian local sang lullabies to her young kids and put us to sleep 😊 Over all this place was special. Just what a true hotel should be. Shared spaces = shared experiences. We never turned on the tv we chose to play board games by the pool. Morning coffee in the hammock chairs overlooking the koi pond. If you could pick this place up and put it in a better location it would literally be perfect!

SCP is our home away from home. The staff are the friendliest there is, and they treat you like family. We had an amazing time there, and was treated to true Hawaiian hospitality. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and so relaxing after a long day in Hilo. Conveniently located in the heart of Hilo. A close 5 minute drive from the airport and town and activities. We look forward to returning soon
