This is a very cute, quirky property, with a great location in Hilo within easy walking distance to lots of restaurants. Our room was small but clean. Saw zero bugs anywhere on the property other than garden spiders outside in the garden (other reviewers comments on bugs in rooms). Coqui frogs are very loud but we enjoyed the sound. We didn't eat the free breakfast--looked like basic pastries and fruit. Our only complaint was the hot water. We had read and were told to be patient and let the water run, but within our 3 days at the hotel, despite running the water for 15+ minutes, it never got warmer than tepid. Maybe we weren't patient enough, but that was a long time to wait for warm water that never materialized. Other than the water, we enjoyed the place.

My first visit to Hawaii from England with my friend started in Oahu where I was spoilt with modern hotels and nice weather, so imagine my horror when we arrived in the rain at Wild Ginger which from the outside looked old and tired. However, appearances can be very deceptive. It is an older colonial style building but it has a lot of character and charm. The rooms are clean, tidy and basic and housekeeping are available every day. The breakfast consisted of fruit, pastries, juice and coffee, and the staff could not be faulted and were always eager to help in any way they could. It is in a good location for the town of Hilo and the major routes around the island.
Yes the property could do with updating, however the owners have only recently purchased it and are in the process of doing just that.
We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it, especially if you want a true local hawaiian experience.

Let me start by saying the staff was excellent. Very friendly and helpful.

I arrived at night and it looked like an abandoned property if not for all the cars in the lot. They were nice enough to leave my key in a lockbox as I arrived later in the evening for check in.

Once I managed to get in the main door (which isn't marked and was a little confusing at night), the lobby was quaint and actually had a cool vibe. As you make your way to the room it gets progressively more questionable.

Past the lobby, the property could use some basic maintenance and cleaning. In the room there's no TV but it did have a large effective ceiling fan and another fan to use as well. It also had a fridge w/ freezer annnd that's about it. The room was clean on it's face but don't move any furniture or look behind anything.

I did meet a nice cat named "Pete" who asked to be let in the front door, followed us to our room and hung out with us for a while, so that was cool. The breakfast was basic with some sliced fruits and bread with coffee and fruit juice.

If you're looking for just a place to sleep for a night while you're doing something in town then I'd suggest this place due to the price but I wouldn't set it as a base of operations for an entire vacation as it lacks anything but the most basic anmenities and didn't feel like a place to come to after a long day of exploring Hilo to wind down and relax but you get what you pay for.

In hindsight I would have fought my usual cheapness, paid an extra $25 or $30 and stayed somewhere else but that's just me. Depends on what you're looking for.

My spouse and I stayed at Wild Ginger on our honeymoon. We wanted to avoid resorts and find something both affordable and comfortable, and Wild Ginger fit the bill. Even before we arrived, we received helpful advice on our trip from the owner, who patiently answered all our questions about Hilo's weather, etc. via phone. She was also flexible and generous about traveling during COVID, allowing us to push back our dates by a couple days with no charge and offering to be flexible if our flights were delayed.

The hotel itself is a charming older building, looking out over a lush garden and the ocean, and walking distance to cafes, shops, and the farmers market in downtown Hilo. There's plenty of parking in the hotel's small lot. Tasty fresh pastries and fruit are served every morning in the open-air lobby. Our room itself was comfortable and clean. Amenities are basic since it's an old building, but there was plenty of hot water, and the open windows were more than sufficient climate control in the beautiful weather.

During our stay, we were able to borrow beach towels from the owner, and most importantly received tons of helpful advice from her on cute towns to stop in and sights to see on our roadtrips. She was truly wonderful and we were so grateful to have met her. For anyone looking for a relaxing, comfortable, warm place to stay in Hilo, we highly recommend this place!

If you want to experience a Hawaiian resort or the standard amenities of a chain hotel, this hotel is probably not for you. But it you are willing to trade those things (including air conditioning) for an ocean view, a continental breakfast that includes ripe tropical fruit, a lovely garden with fruit trees on one side of the hotel and a lush jungle on the other, plus a wonderfully charming, engaging, and helpful hostess, you should book at Wild Ginger Hotel. It is one of the best hotel experiences we have had.

Owners Lee and Jason recently bought this historic property (the original wing was built in 1911) and have big plans for upgrading it, while keeping its “old Hawaii” charm. Until they are able to upgrade, expect a room that needs a paint job and may be lacking a TV. But also expect a place where you feel welcomed, relaxed, and well cared for.

The pluses for this place are a great location, on a residential street close to main shops and eateries, and a relatively low cost. Service was also friendly. Downside is that the facility is pretty worn, with few updates. Our room was clean, but there was a gaping hole in one window, and the bathroom had no COLD water, only hot, no matter how long we ran it.

From my first contact with The Wild Ginger, our experience was positive. A few months back, I reached out to make our reservation and Lee (one of the owners) greeted me with such warmth and kindness. I told her the price I was being quoted by a 3rd party, and she beat it... so, be sure to call her!
Lee explained the age of the building, no TV's and no AC; we did not need either. *High speed internet excellent, never had an issue, and we needed it since we both work part time. The surroundings were beautiful, the peace and serenity amazing. Each morning, there is an included breakfast of very fresh fruit, bagels, muffins... coffee, tea, and juice-all one needs to start your day exploring the area. Lee made excellent recommendations upon request and was there whenever we needed her. My husband got a chance to chat with her husband (Jason?), hearing his dreams for this old place. Love the positivity and plans to keep the area authentic to its roots.
We did not rent a car, but walked or used Lyft to venture out. Under $10 to go 2-3 miles, under $20 to go to the Botanical Gardens.
If you want a 5 star hotel with room service, your bed turned down each night and a chocolate on your pillow, don't come here. But, iff you want a warm, quant place to lay your head for a few days and enjoy the beauty of the big island, stay here.
Ask Lee for food recs. We loved the Boocha Bar, The Temple, New Chiang Mai Thai Cuisine, and The Pineapple Shack (there are two, we ate at the one just 3 blocks from The Wild Ginger). If you want an outstanding burger, go to Ola Brewery, my husband loved his.
Both John and I wish the new owners only the best. We will be back and definitely rec staying here!

Best value for folks wanting inexpensive lodging while exploring the East side of the Big Island.

Has the feel of a youth hostel with beautiful vistas and a great lanai where you can hang out and enjoy a breakfast of bagels, croissants, fresh fruit, coffee and other goodies.

The ceiling fan keeps you cool and the shower is nice and hot! The owners are onsite and Lee will guide you to the best places nearby, places tourists don’t always know to visit.

Her husband, a native Hawaiian is an artist. The most beautiful sculptures, traditional Hawaiian totems and others, are on display. So, support the arts and enjoy the views, the breakfast and the casual friendliness of this very affordable lodging.

The Wild Ginger is a great value for Hawaii. It’s in an old building, so don’t expect luxurious finishings, but the owner is wonderful and really made us feel at home. She stayed up late to greet us for our after-hours arrival and put out a delicious complimentary breakfast with baked goods and tropical fruits. It’s right in the heart of Hilo, so you’re set up well for a nice walking tour of downtown.

We loved the Wild Ginger! What a great little hotel. No-frills and full of the best historic charm. Lee was such a kind host, eager to suggest things to see and do, knew us all by name, and genuinely wanted to know how our days were.
The room was simple enough (bed, fridge, chair, night stands, bathroom - no dresser) but sufficed for our needs. We loved sleeping with the windows open, falling asleep to the sound of frogs and waking up to the birds and sunrises. The lobby has plenty of seating, and we were pleasantly surprised to learn breakfast was included (fruit, coffee, pastries). Wild Ginger is in a quiet residential neighborhood, but close enough to walk into town. Wifi was a little spotty in our room, but strong in the lobby.
