The thing you remember most about your experience here will be the manager, Dutch. He is friendly, informative, flexible, accommodating, and will spend his time talking about everything with you. This hostel was very clean, well managed but not inflexible. We called at 4pm to book our beds and Dutch said to call when we arrived (around 10pm) and he'd let us in the back door. We received sheets, pillow, blanket, and a small towel. The female dorm room had sturdy built-in wooden bunk beds painted a welcoming lime-green with a bright pink sitting area. The new memory foam mattresses and pillows are comfy. There aren't any lights or USB ports in the bunks, so bring a battery pack. There are hangers and a few hooks. Around the kitchen, I saw a co-ed shower w/ 2 showers, 1 toilet & sink, and a bathroom with 1 toilet and sink. I didn't try to use them in the morning, but they were free at night. I was told to lock the shower door if I didn't want a male coming in to use the other shower while I was in there. We had a small service dog staying in our room who was very quiet & friendly. Weather in June was rainy and humid. Bring an umbrella! Things were just opening up after covid but the few restaurants that were open were still only allowing take-away with masks. There's a drive-thru burger joint across the street, but we walked 3 min. south to the Cafe 100 for breakfast and brought it back to the hostel to eat. There were free tea bags and a water heater in the sitting room with 2 fans blowing the humidity away. I didn't use the kitchen except to store food in the fridge. There were lockers, so bring your own padlock. We had a large bike lock and it fit. The location wasn't anything special in Hilo unless you have a car and plan to drive to nearby places. I was hoping this part of Hilo would be quaint, but it wasn't. We took a taxi from the Hilo airport and it was a 6-min. drive for $15 (including tip). We walked 27 min to the beautiful Japanese Garden. After we got our rental car, Dutch told us about a local waterfall (Wailuku Falls) we could swim in, which was a 10-min drive. Dorm beds were expensive at $50/night, but it's Hawaii.

I recently stayed at the Big Island Hostel and enjoyed my time there very much. The hostel was clean, the room was comfortable, the environment was peaceful, and the staff were very friendly. The hostel is within walking distance of the downtown and some wonderfully beautiful parks. This is a great place to chill out and I would recommend it to anyone.

It is a very clean and good organised hostel. Also the staff is very nice and always happy to help. It is located in the center of Hilo and not far from the habour and the beach. I can only recommend it.

Room was pretty with colorful walls and clean. Air conditioning worked great in the room. The host was very helpful. There are good restaurants (Cafe 100 and Hilo Burger Joint) in walking distance. I was actually the only guest at my first night in the entire hostel since lot of people cancelled out reservation because of volcano eruption. However I feel really safe for the entire stay here.

I stayed here for the first time this summer. The place is spotless clean and the decor is fantastic. The location cannot be topped at the price. There is a restaurant below, that is currently being renovated so hopefully is ready to go by my next visit. Is very close to the waterfront, coffee shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, etc. If you need a taxi they can order one for you or you can also just get an uber which is super cheap because everything is near by. As a single girl, I felt pretty safe here. I would totally stay here again and if I come with the girls this is better than a hotel because we can all stay in the same room.
