The Bamboo Room was a tranquil spot with expansive views of the ocean. We enjoyed the sound of the waves and birds with the warm tropical breeze. We even saw a pod of dolphins from the lanai during breakfast one morning! The parking is tight, but we were able to manage it in our rented Jeep. We will definitely plan to stay in the Bamboo Room when we visit Hilo again!

Our host & hostess were extremely nice and accommodating. We loved the kitty cat always freeing us. The view of the ocean & surfers was perfect. Able to hear the waves crashing all night long. The pool & hot tub were a nice touch for chilling on a relaxing afternoon. We had the suite which allowed for plenty of room.

We stayed at Hale Kai Hawaii for 4 nights in May 2005. Maria & Rick are the hosts of this wonderful B&B. They took over this property apprx 3 years ago, seriously revamping what I understand to be very outdated lodgings.

We stayed in the Pele suite. It was very roomy & decorated beautifully; the color scheme was bright & cheery. The bathroom was a little bit on the small side (something that is already on their list of improvements to be made), but pleasant with bright multi-colored towels & lots of storage room. Some of Rick’s photography hangs in the room & was stunning to say the least. The gardens on the property are a great representation of the lush plant life that you will see on the east side of the island, and beautifully maintained.

As for Maria's artwork, the breakfasts, breathtaking is an understatement. Every night we went to bed guessing what we would have the next morning. Each morning began with great coffee, amazing fresh tropical juices, and tons of fresh island fruit. Then the breakfasts would come, and the jaws would drop. Portuguese sausage & taro pancakes with your choice of coconut, passion fruit, or maple syrup. My other favorite was feta cheese frittata with fresh tomatoes, chicken apple sausage, & freshly baked mango scones with guava jam. And if the gourmet food isn't enough stimulation, the view is an inspirational way to start the day.

It is quite obvious that Rick & Maria love what they are doing at Hale Kai Hawaii. They are enthusiastic about sharing the beauty of Hawaii with their guest. They gave the best restaurant suggestions (we had the best Thai food ever). And every morning Rick offers up his expertise in sights to be seen, or sights not to waste your time on. He really listens to his guests & tailors his suggestions to what will best suit their interests. And sure enough, he was dead on each day.
We will suggest this B&B to everyone who travels to the Big Island. We will definitely return to Hale Kai Hawaii.

We had made a confirmed reservation in May but when the B&B was sold the reservation was lost. Fortunately I called to check in restaurants I was told I had no room. Been there many times and always had one of two rooms we liked. They told me they could give me another which it turned out to be tiny, good for a single with little luggage, and no storage. Couldn’t unpack suitcases fully, so they remained in the floor. Tripped over them nearly breaking my toe. Breakfast food was pitiful. Room was so damp our clothes remained wet. Lighting was poor. Never again! We don’t feel the manager was honest in describing this room

This is not your classic bed and breakfast… more like air B and B. Based on previous reviews, it seems there was a change in Management recently.
They don’t serve breakfast, with Covid as an excuse which I can understand. But if you are going to do a prepacked breakfast at least put decent granola bars, yogurt, fresh fruit. Everything was the cheapest quality food. Their bread looked like one of those packed breads at Walmart. The coffee grounds were not good and tasted like the cheapest coffee from Walmart … which in hawaii I would expect only amazing kona coffee. If I worked at a bed and breakfast, and had to do prepacked meals I would at least make overnight oats or something that seems more homemade! Breakfast was very disappointing and not appetizing. They also did not refill the eggs my husband ate our second nights

There was an odd stench in our kitchen like as if food was stuck in cracks. Also food from the previous tenets was left in the sink.

There was hair in bathroom from previous tenets.
Some fruit flies.
Parking lot was a little difficult to fit in

Only pro was the ocean view and sunrises.
I wish we could have stayed when the old owners were there

I booked this hotel before the new management took over. I will give them credit for good communication throughout the process. But I have to agree with most other recent reviews. They need to step up the breakfast, or change the type of hotel. You can't really call this place a B&B any longer. It just isn't! There is a coffee maker, microwave and toaster in the room. Our welcome letter mentioned breakfast items that just weren't there. Room is showing some aging. The parking is scary! We got lucky as there wasn't another car in the spot near ours, so my husband was able to reposition and straighten up a few times to get our car in correctly. Also know that they don't have air conditioning. You can open the sliding glass door and get a nice breeze, but once you close the door at night it's really stuffy. But the view is amazing!!

Pros: Oceanfront accommodations with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and Hilo Bay. Small pool and hot tub. 2 miles north of Hilo Town. Host was helpful and provided anything you asked for. Very clean rooms.
Cons: Four oceanfront rooms are adjacent to each other. Need to keep doors open for breeze or provided fan, since no A/C. Breakfast is extremely limited-not a sit down and barely continental due to COVID. Parking is a bit difficult in a tight space. A little expensive based on the cons listed, especially the limited breakfast.,

We stayed here a couple of nights in the Pele Suite.
It was nice and roomy. The house is beautiful.

We thought we would be getting breakfast (like a real one). Unfortunately due to covid there was only toast, yogurt, peanut butter etc. So kind of disappointing for the price. We usually enjoy meeting the owners of B&B's but we never did meet the owners.

When we arrived we had no towels. They kindly brought them down. There is a community room downstairs, but we didn't find much in there. And our toaster was broken, so bread was great, but no toast. There was a little microwave which was great. The bed was comfy. Shower tiny, but fine.

The grounds are quite lovely. In the morning you could hear the surfers next door yelling at each other. And of course the birds singing. Otherwise this is in a very quiet neighborhood.

We did not get a chance to use the pool or the hot tub. Of course it's Hilo, so it rained each day we were here.

We met a lovely couple staying next room over and they were quite lovely to chat with. Always our favorite way to meet fellow travelers.

Parking is kind of tight in here, but there is parking on site.

Hilo, Island of Hawaii

My husband and I just returned from our stay on the Island of Hawaii at the Hale Kai Bed and Breakfast in Hilo. The location is very good, but unfortunately we were not satisfied with our stay. Our room looked like it was decorated in the 70's and had not been updated. The shower door folded inward making it difficult to reach one of the facets. It could have used a good cleaning. The nightstand next to the bed had stickey rings of coke from the previous guests and it had not been dusted for some time.
The exterior is also in need of maintenance. The screen door was torn away from the wooden frame and the sliding door was barely functional-very hard to close. Neither door had locks.
Parking was difficult. Luggage had to be carried up and down many steps leading to our room.
Breakfast was nice; however the amout of food served on our first day was not adequate for the number of guests being served. Breakfast was good the second morning, with more than enough food.
We cannot recommend this B & B.

My husband and I stayed at the Hale Kai the end of Oct 2005. We loved every minute of our stay and didn't want to leave. Our room was the Moana Room and it was much bigger than expected. Our bed was very comfortable, the decorations were wonderful and provided us with the comforts of aloha. This was not a fancy resort style accomodation, nor was the price. We didn't want a resort, we wanted the feel and comfort of Hawaii and that's just what we got.
The grounds were beautiful, lush with tropical flowers and foliage and the view was spectacular. Listening to the sound of the surf was relaxing and comforting.
One of the reasons we picked the Hale Kai was because of the breakfasts and we weren't disappointed. Fresh fruit, macadamia nut pancakes, sausages, etc. and a chance to visit with other guests. Ric and Maria were the most wonderful hosts, very helpful with advice on sights to see, places to visit and restuaurants. We were there on halloween and their house was nicely decorated, they even served us breakfast in costume! They truly have a diamond mine in the wonderful town of Hilo.

Yes, stairs. Parking was a bunch of back-and-forth moves because there were other cars and the lot is shallow in one direction. We had a small car; a large one might be tough to park if there's only one space open. The pool wasn't large. I did not use it as there wasn't time.

This is not a noisy spot. Ask the owner re king bed, rooms are not fancy but spacious. Request a room at the far end - away from dining table.

how do I get to the car rental?
Answer from Ricardo Z
Aloha, The car rental is about a 3 minute walk from baggage claim at the Hilo Airport. If you are coming into the Kona Airport, there is a shuttle that takes you there and it's about 5 minutes away from baggage claim.
