The Pagoda Hilo Bay is a sad dilapidated unkept property. It is nowhere near a two star hotel. Giving it one star is a stretch. There are a number of negative adjectives and descriptions that other people have posted, and they are mostly a true and accurate description of our experience staying at the Pagoda Hilo Bay as well.
Unkept property: dirty building that needs pressure wash and paint job, old slow sketchy elevator with broken buttons, rusty stairwells, dingy dark hallways with old dirty stained carpeting, cheap household lock on the front door, no deadbolt lock or other secondary secure lock, old unevenly painted walls with water stains, dusty old fixtures, no air conditioner (just cheap fan), no TV remote (rabbit ears antenna), no headboard, no coffee maker, no ice bucket or ice machine, just overall unsterile feel.
There are semi-trailers in the parking lot used for supplies/ storage. Boarded up eyesore restaurant facility adjacent.
The bed, linens and in room carpet seemed clean. Thank goodness. Front desk staff was friendly and cordial.
Note: This room was booked through Marketing Concepts (Newbury Park, CA) with their free “PROMO” voucher. Upgrade hotel change from their “PROMO” voucher would essentially be full price or minor discounted accommodation.

First I want to say this place is not the fault of people who work here.
I have had to stay here as I was looking to purchase a home in Hilo and have a pet. No AC, very dirty. But today (for at least the fourth time ) there is no hot water, the elevators are broken, the pool is closed, and it's frankly scary. The owners (as far as I can tell it is owned by Aqua Hotel chain) should be ashamed. Actually they should be sued.
Don't even think about it.

We planned to spend a night here, but when we arrived, the horror that awaited us was almost beyond description. My wife and I have travelled the world, and have stayed in a wide variety of accommodations, but this is the first time we simply could not spend even one night. It was filthy dirty, smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, the dirty walls were pockmarked with holes, there was hair in the shower and refrigerator. Apparently, this property is also a flophouse for low income folks as well. There was no lack of dodgy characters on the property, and the room across the hall appeared to have had its door kicked in at some point. Run screaming from this place

The staff is off at 3pm and I had to get my key from a lockbox. When you drive upto this hotel, it seriously looks like a crack hotel. Everything looks rusty and old. Cigarettes smoke fills the hallways. No ac and have to use a ceiling fan. They it’s too hot and leave the windows open this filling your room with mosquitos. I went to do my standard check of the pillows and sheets and sure enough there was bed bugs. I immediately called a friend to come pick me up and slept on their couch. The next day when they opened at 8am with someone I went back as I forgot my charger. I showed her the pics and she said she just started there and thinks the place is disgusting. I went upto the room to grab my charger and snapped new pics of the even more bed bugs that were there. She took my number and said the manager would call which no one did and booking can’t get my money back even though I did let even sleep there. Do not book a room here!!!

I reserved a room here June 2021. It was the most disgusting room/hallways I have seen in a hotel before. Choose to lose my room payment and stay somewhere else. The pictures do not accurately reflect the room I got. Deceptive / false advertising. Disgusting hotel. Reserve here at your own risk. It is a good location but be prepared for what you see you when you open the door. Wish I had taken photos before I left so you could see how the pictures advertised look nothing like the real room. The only reason I can see to give one star is that you can’t give negative stars.

Dirty - old building, cockroaches, dirty towels - avoid as much as possible. Shady individuals hanging around. Should probably be closed / not suitable for business. Staff does not care, manager unavailable.

Unbelievable! I can only give a rating of 1 dot (terrible) and considering what I encountered during my stay... that is too high! Where do I start? I went to Hilo on business. After a long flight, I wanted to check-in, get unpacked, have a nice dinner and get some rest before the scheduled early morning meetings. Fat chance! Apparently the hotel has a local nightclub that plays loud "booming" Hip Hop/(C)Rap music? all night long. It vibrates the building! This nightclub rages and I mean rages until 4 a.m. During and after operating hours the unruly noisy crowd reek total havoc! Unbelievable! Since I was unable to sleep, I called the front desk and "Robert" told me that there is nothing they can do. He was very rude and curt when I asked questions about it. No aloha here... My room faced Banyan Dr. where most of the commotion takes place. (even with the patio door closed, it was unbearable!) I asked for another room away from the noise and was told "none available" ( I don't think a room without noise existed) I left after 4 days of a 14 day stay after finding another place. As I sat on the small patio during my sleepless nights I witnessed numerous assaults/fights by both males and females. This bar crowd screams, curses, yells, breaks bottles, blows their horns, burns rubber (squealsl wheels), activate their car alarms (on purpose), drives recklessly over the curbs, sidewalks, grass areas, drinks openly in public, and causes utter chaosthe time during my short stay. Not just 1 or 2 police cars, but 7 or more! Everynight, several times a night...Unbelievable! Even they did nothing to control these crowds - they just stood around and watched...Unbelievable! I was appalled to also see males urinating everywhere...out in the open! And I mean everywhere! On trees, walls, cars, plants, etc. ...Unbelievable! I suppose the bathroom inside the nightclub was broken? or ? to busy? or none existed? The hotel doesn't have any public restrooms so I guess its ok to pee anywhere. Disgusting! (even in front of the police and the hotel's security guards) Unbelievable! I don't have time to type information about the rest of this hellhole. Including the terrible smelly rooms and unfriendly staff. It was truly an unbelievable experience and I hope that you heed my advice (for your own safety) and never stay at the Country Club. Take my word for it...it is nasty. There should be laws against this. If there are laws...no one cares to enforce them. Unbelievable!

There are not enough bad words to descibe this place. We stayed there during Valentines week February 2005. This was the worse week of my life. It was to be a vacation but turned out to be a disaster. I am now having nightmares about this place. Everything from check-in to check-out from A to Z was WRONG here. Checking in the staff was unfriendly and couldn't even fake a smile.

The Good- If you like loud noises, vibration, raging nightclubs, drugs, alcohol, theft, police, ignorant people, vulgar language, uncontrollable situations, harrassment, no aloha, no rules, no rest, no respect, awful smells/odors, mold, mildew, feral cats, trash/litter, smoke, leaks, urine, and uncomfortable surroundings, this is the place for you! I LIVED there for about 8 mo. and know first hand. The other readers comments are extremely accurate (they only touched the tip of the iceberg) I only wish I could have afforded to move sooner as this place was taking its toll on my mental and physical well being. It truly is a "low income housing project" as stated by another Trip Advisor, a real GHETTO. I thank the Lord that I was able to get out as it was getting progessively worse. The property management company is lame. They ignored all my letters and requests for improvements. Besides, once I started to complain about the horrible conditions I was harrassed. Plus, my vehicle was stolen within 25 ft. of the security guard on duty! The security there is inept. If you ever decide to rent, buy or exchange at this den of iniquity, it is critical that you USE DUE DILIGENCE. Research the facts. BUYER-RENTER BEWARE.

Three words.... "Stay somewhere else!!!".
The problems were too numerous to mention. Some of the problems Trip Advisor won't allow me to tell you about. It was a nightmare. We left and checked into the hotel up the street called Hilo Hawaiian (that was nice). If you plan on having the Hawaiian vacation of a lifetime don't ruin it by staying here. We know now why it was cheap. You could not pay me too stay there ever again! and don't take your family there Please.
