Gay and Koa are wonderful hosts. We stayed with them for 4 days in early November and enjoyed their hospitality, local knowledge, and personal experiences of living (and farming) in the big island.

Bed and Breakfast house is a historic home built by a Japanese Family around the 30s-40s (?) with a fascinating history. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms with a full sized bed but never felt cramped. The waterfall shower was refreshing especially after going on the hikes around the Volcano National Park (40 min from inn) and the Botanical Garden (10min from inn). It does get warm but the ceiling fan cools down the room quickly.

Breakfast everyday included local fruits and a different warm dish everyday. French toast, Quiche, Eggs and Sausage, etc. Breakfast time was time not just to eat but to meet the other guests and to share stories & discoveries.

Location was centrally located in Hilo and roughly 5min drive to downtown where you can find many restaurants and shops. Seafood is the prime cuisine and you can find Poke almost anywhere but recommend the nearby Japanese restaurant, Miyo’s. Restaurant serves traditional Japaneses meals with a mellow atmosphere. All and all, Gay and Koa are great hosts and their hospitality makes the Hilo Honu Inn much more than just a place to stay.

This bed and breakfast embodies the spirit of Aloha and was the best decision we made in planning our first trip to the big Island for a romantic mini moon. To start, it's located at the top of a peaceful hill yet close to everything you want to be near in downtown Hilo (foodies, you will appreciate the abundance of mouth watering hole in the wall restaurants), the gardens, Rainbow falls, etc. Lush vegetation surrounds the well-built stunning B&B, our spacious room had every little touch, decorated in island style with an authentic infusion of Hawaiian touches. The host was exceptionally welcoming yet nonintrusive at the same time. Breakfast was multi-course and delicious in a beautiful dining room with sun streaming through the windows as we listened to soft Hawaiian music in the background, surrounded by pictures and artwork reflecting the host's true love of the island. Housekeeping provided, mini-fridge, good internet, great shower. We tend to want to travel a new place for every vacation but plan to come back to Hilo just to stay at this B&B. We truly left it with more soul and serenity than when we came!

This B&B was such a treat. The location is very convenient to everything in Hilo and then the parking is free so makes it easy to explore the island with a car rental. Gay really cares about her guests and you can see it in all the details and how accommodating she is. The breakfast was always delicious and fresh. The rooms are reasonably priced. Hilo Honu Inn made for a very relaxing experience. Highly recommend to book here for an authentic experience away from hotels and resorts. Everything was clean and well kept. Also, Gay can help with any info and anything you may need for your stay on the Big Island.

Fate brought us to Gay and her Hilo Honu B & B. Our original plans to rent a house were cancelled by the owner, so we feel very lucky to have found the Hilo Honu B & B with it’s authentic Japanese Samurai Room that is very spacious with a view of the bay. Even got to see a rainbow. My husband Jim and I enjoyed our 9 night stay immensely. We are world travelers and this is one of the best B & B experiences we have had. This was all due to Gay’s warm hospitality who made us feel right at home. It felt like we were staying with friends. Very convenient location just up the hill from the “downtown” where many excellent restaurants are located. For most of our stay, we felt like we had the whole house to ourselves. We are movie-holics so appreciated that we could stream current movies on the tv and also watch the Super Bowl on the local cable. Even though we already had plans to go over to the Kona side after our stay, we would have liked to have spent more time here. We appreciate the fact that Hilo has retained the Hawaiian culture and the laid back attitude. We enjoyed the nightly live Hawaiian music in various restaurants.

What a blessing to have found Gay and Koa. They were the most gracious and informative hosts at this exceptional bed and breakfast. We had a last minute change of plans that landed us in Hilo, so our small travel group of two couples didn't have much time to research/plan the "to-do's" of our trip. They have a deep understanding of the Big Island's unique culture and sites. They helped us plan each of our days, and we weren't disappointed with any of their recommendations. Pro tip would be to wake up a little early each morning for their AMAZING breakfasts (i.e., macadamia nut breakfast soufflé, orange french toast with homemade lilikoi syrup, and platters of the freshest local fruits) , chat with them about what you'd like to do, hear what they have to say about the history of Hilo and the island, and then take it from there (I feel like I could've talked to them for days...they were SO much fun to chat with).

We stayed at the Samurai Suite, which I cannot recommend enough. It has a little living area and a reading chaise. The views are breathtaking. We saw no less than 10 different bird species in the morning on the trees in front of our window. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was super spacious. There is an extra bedroom in the suite if you have children or other friends traveling with you. The house has a lot of history and Gay has spent a lot of time and energy respectfully representing the history in the house. Please take time to ask Gay and Koa about their artistry and new farm - Gay is exceptionally talented at making feather leis and they both are woodworkers.

Don't pass up the chance to stay at Hilo Honu and start a friendship with Gay and Koa. They were the biggest highlight of our trip.

We did a 3 night stay at the Hilo Honu Inn and felt welcomed from the moment we arrived to the morning we departed. The Bali Hai Suite had a comfortable bed and separate seating area. Gay and Koa served flavorful breakfasts accompanied by a wide range of local fruit and other specialties. We enjoyed our morning conversations with them as they shared information about Hawaiian history and culture. They also gave us hints on local sights and restaurants. When we departed early on our last day, Gay put together a travel breakfast for us and bid us farewell in the driveway.

Our stay at the Hilo Honu Inn was not only a highlight of our trip to the Big Island but also the best Bed and Breakfast experience we have ever had! (And that is based on 40+ years of traveling!) Gay and Koa are a lovely couple who obviously care greatly about their customers and go above and beyond in keeping their beautiful home clean and comfortable, providing amazing breakfasts, sharing their stories, and keeping the conversation lively around the breakfast table. They truly make you feel like family. We stayed in the Honu's Nest, which is their smallest room, but was perfect for my husband and me, with a very comfortable queen-sized bed, wonderful bathroom with a large shower, a television, refrigerator, and air conditioner if needed. Location is great for exploring Hilo with several nearby waterfalls, caves, parks, gardens, museums, shops and wonderful restaurants. We also enjoyed the nearby Planetarium on a rainy afternoon. Highly recommend a visit to Hilo while on the Big Island, with a stay at the delightful Hilo Honu Inn!

I had a great time at the Hilo Honu Inn. The Inn has a very nice feel to it and is tastefully furnished and decorated, and is comfortable and clean. Breakfast consisted of great local fruit and a different yummy hot dish each day. The location is also good, walking distance to downtown Hilo and to Rainbow Falls.

The inn keepers Gay and Koa were very special, sharing lots of their knowledge of Hawaii and experience living there. They put me in touch with their friend, the biggest expert in Hawaii birds, and his tour was the highlight of the trip! Also, I was the only guest at the time, and they were extremely generous, letting me stay in a larger room (no charge) and letting me hang out in the room upstairs, which has an amazing view and sitting area.

I would definitely go back for my next Big Island trip!

We spent 5 fabulous nights at the Hilo Honu Inn B&B. The traditional Hawaiian plantation-style home is beautiful and very charming. It is located in a quiet bedroom community within easy walking distance to restaurants and sites in downtown Hilo. We stayed in the spacious Bali Hai Suite. The bed was comfortable, there were lots of fans, an air conditioner, plenty of power outlets and the shower came with a decadent rainfall showerhead. Our wonderful hosts were Gay and her partner Koa. They were generous in their advice, recommendations, history, and knowledge of Hilo and all of the Big Island. Each morning we were treated to a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit from their farm plot, either a sweet or savory main dish, toast, yogurt, juice and coffee. I particularly enjoyed listening to their stories of life in Hawaii and learning more about their traditional Hawaiian handicrafts. Both are accomplished artists and if you are lucky enough, they might show you examples of their art pieces. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Hilo Honu Inn B&B and would highly recommend for anyone visiting Hilo.

Gay and Koa were amazing hosts. They are both extremely knowledgeable about Hawaiian history and culture. They are also artists who are dedicated to keeping Hawaiian crafts alive. The spacious Asian suite we rented was beautiful and extremely clean. Although we were surrounded by antiques, charging ports were provided in extremely convenient spaces.

Each morning we enjoyed a healthy variety of home-cooked specialty items and fresh fruit. When Gay realized we had to catch an early plane on our final day on the Big Island, she provided us with her homemade banana bread, canned juices to go, and yogurts. Koa even got up very early to make sure a pot of Hawaiian coffee was freshly brewed for us and hot water was ready for tea.

Without a doubt, if you plan to stay in Hilo, the Hilo Hona Inn Bed and Breakfast is an excellent choice. We would absolutely stay there again.
