Our family of 5 (adults) loved driving up the jungle road to this incredible oasis, manicured gardens with such great flower variety, lovely people running the B&B, loving their home and we were so glad they share it ! We ate in Pahoa and had one of our best meals on the islands yet. Would recommend this wonderful place to...

We absolutely loved Hale Makamae! We stumbled across this Bed and Breakfast by accident and were so glad that we did. Originally, we thought it was going to be out of the way from what we wanted to see but it ended up being right near the heart of all the action! The setting is absolutely gorgeous and was extremely...

It was just superb. My parents came with us and stayed in one bedroom and my family stayed in 2 bedroom unit and it was just perfect. She recommended staying in separate units because of bathroom on two bedroom unit was located inside the master bedroom and it will be uncomfortable for all of us(4 adults and 2 kids) to...

Our flight arrived at Hilo about 10 o'clock in the morning and I contacted Petra to ask if we could drop off our bags so we could enjoy the rest of the day without worrying about their security. This was absolutely fine with her and luckily we were also able to have our suite (Lanai suite -lovely and loads of...

Stayed for a night - 2 bedroomed apartment was great for our family of 4 (2 queen beds), but the atmosphere made the stay memorable - beautiful surrounds, orchids, frog calling at night, close enough to the hot pools and larva flows... and friendly and helpful hosts... Not intrusive, understanding of small children, travel advice and beautiful breakie.....

We enjoyed 3 lovely nights at this great bed and breakfast, and wished it could have been more. The hosts Petra and John were wonderful - very welcoming and full of useful advice about what to see and where to go. And Petra's delicious breakfasts were something we all looked forward to every morning (and missed after we left...especially those...

My family and I stayed for 9 days. Petra and John made us feel very welcome. The rooms were clean and the breakfasts were fresh and delicious. The Hale Makamae is less than an hour drive from so many amazing sites. If you are looking for a relaxing, out of the way place to stay, this might be a good...

I stayed here for several days in Oct 2009 to see the volcanos. As soon as we arrived, Petra greeted us and told us about the incredible lava flow that night. She armed us with flashlights and explained exactly how to get there. It's only about 10-15 minutes away from Hale Makamae. Definitely the best part of our trip to...

Our family had the pleasure of spending one night at Hale Makamae in August 2010. Being a large group of 7, we required the use of 2 separate accommodations, both of which were spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable and beautifully appointed. The Lanai Suite on the second floor had a deck overlooking Petra’s lovely garden. The entrance to the Makamae Studio,...
