Staying at the bamboo guest house at the volcano rainforest retreat was a very unique experience. We would highly recommend anyone planning to visit the volcano to stay there. The setting was very cool, the accommodations were fantastic and the service was excellent.

Property's Favourite Review
My fiancee and I stayed at the Sanctuary Cottage for 2 nights in December 2021 as the first stop on our engagement-moon, and we couldn't have imagined anything more perfect. When we first arrived, Kathleen greeted us warmly, walked us around the property, shared its history, and then gave us an overview of the area and suggestions for how to make the most of our time at Volcanoes National Park. After a delicious dinner at nearby Kilauea Lodge, we came back to the cottage and soaked in the Japanese o'furo hot tub, surrounded by the sounds of rustling branches and swaying bamboo; it was incredibly relaxing and such a refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Upon waking the next morning, we enjoyed delicious fresh fruit, pastries, and some of the best coffee we've ever had, all courtesy of our gracious hosts. By daylight the sanctuary cottage was even more charming, nestled into lush greenery and with just enough room for a couple to feel cozy-but-not-cramped. We spent our full day exploring Volcanoes National Park before dinner at The Rim and a long starlit night out to the flowing lava lake, all of which are just minutes away from Volcano Rainforest Retreat. We were sad to leave the next morning but grateful for our wonderful hosts and for the beautiful sanctuary they shared with us. Peter, Kathleen, and Danyelle were always available and ensured that our stay was everything we could have hoped for. They even reached out to ship back a hoodie we accidentally left behind - at no extra cost. We give Volcano Rainforest Retreat our highest possible recommendation and can't wait to return one day.

Where do I begin? Beyond our dreams and memories from last year! Each moment here is blissful. From a warm and helpful reintroduction to the Bamboo Guest Cottage by excellent Danyelle to the care and friendliness of Jenn, the co- manager on site over the weekend. Privacy is highly respected here! Each cottage is its own retreat. We so enjoyed the furo each day and evening, the wonderful, generous offerings of breakfast delivered each day, the comfort and beauty of the spacious rooms and the lovely sitting area in the front of the cottage. The spectacular floral arrangements in the hand crafted vases both inside and out are stunning. I must have taken a hundred photos! We enjoyed visiting the Park and the Village. Wonderful art at the galleries in both too! And, I go home with 2 new pairs of hand crafted earrings. Stayed in and around the cottage one full day of the four we stayed! Also, an easy drive to enjoy a great lunch at the Hilo Bay Cafe one day. Again..the word blissful. We leave so very grateful that this extraordinary place exists. We feel so fortunate to have booked again for next May!

Took a solo trip here! Exceeded expectations, photos, etc. Stay was incredible. Definitely for someone who loves being out in nature - you can hear the birds all night - slept like a baby. Deep soaking tub is for the books.

If you like privacy and an off the beaten path experience you will really enjoy this. The cabin was rustic and beautiful and with good amenities and beautiful grounds. The whole ambiance is very relaxing and peaceful. Every unit has a separate entrance and we did not see any of the other guests during the entire stay. We shared a hot tub with one other cabin which caused no inconvenience; some of the other units I am told have their own. Management was very attentive to our needs. Be aware that the grounds are relatively small so although you get a rainforest-like experience, there are not extensive grounds to walk around in. Otherwise I could not recommend this property more highly, it was the highlight of our trip. Will stay here again if we visit again.

This place has NO EQUAL. Surreal. You are in the heart of the rainforest in the most unique, beautiful hand-crafted, wood structures (each of which is different). Spend a minimum of two nights. Perfect location for the national park (Hawaii Volcano). This place was built 35 years ago by hand. We honeymooned there 21 years ago and just returned. Let's fact it, usually when you return to a magical place it isn't the same, but this place has retained all its magic. GO and you'll never forget it.

Everything was perfect. The room is simple but comfortable. The natural environment & surroundings are beautiful. Just a short 10 or 15 minute ride to the summit of the crater viewing area. Our host was friendly & kind. Recommend without reservation!

An amazing place to experience the tropical rainforest on the big island. The cozy octagonal suite with wonderful full glass wall sections let us connect with the environment in total comfort. The fresh breakfast gives you a taste of pure Hawaii before heading off for the days adventures at the nearby Volcano National Park.
