Nestled in the Hawaiian fern forest at the edge of kazumura cave and lava tube, Aloha Crater Lodge welcomes you. Located next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, our rooms are designed with your privacy in mind. Every room has private entrance and bath. An outdoor hot tub is situated in the heart of an ohia tree and fern forest. Kazumura cave is a treasure to behold. Breathe in the beauty and majesty of days of old when lava created this incredible sight. Experience Aloha from the edge of Kazumura cave.
The lodge is located in a verdant, forested area with potential to be a great visit to the Volcano area. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this establishment. On arrival, our host basically said the key is in the door, providing no information about the facilities, like laundry or the hot tub or the great farmers market the next morning that we missed. Their own website as well as most booking sites state breakfast is provided but there was none. When I asked, he said oh, not for your room. Nor did we receive the welcome basket of fruit and yogurt that so many reviewers raved about. We got a two bedroom Suite, but still were charged for our daughter as the third person, which we knew about up front. The worst part was the proprietors carrying on an extremely loud conversation, peppered with Amens and swearwords, until 2:30 in the morning one night right outside our window. The setting is lovely, the rooms somewhat shabby but adequate and funkily interesting. It has potential but still I’d look elsewhere especially at this price. …

Very nice place which was secluded but had everything we needed for the night. Walls were pretty thin so had to be very mindful of the people around us. Really enjoyed the one night stay with a family of four!

This stay is more like an intimate cabin experience. The room we had (#3) had a large bed and a separated area for a twin. It was just perfect for the 3 of us. We were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived that there were lovely amenities - yogurt, fruit, coffee, snacks all provided. What a great and welcomed touch! And better yet, we took advantage of their $10 per person fee to experience/tour their property’s private lava tube. The fee covers hard hat, gloves and a flash light. The owner shows you to the entrance and you can experience it on your own. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC and a highlight of our trip!!!! And, FTR, it was way more fun and interesting than the Thurston tube at Volcanos National Park which was cleaned out, paved and took 15 minutes to walk. BTW, the hosts are lovely.…

My husband and I had plans to go to Volcanoes National Park and stayed here the night prior to our national park visit. This is a quiet hotel tucked away in the jungle. It's very close to the highway and to the national park, but was very quiet. I received an email a few hours prior advising me that we did not need to check in and we were given our room number. The key was in the door when we arrived. The room was nice and had a lot of nice touches such as seashell decorations in the shower tile. The room also had a journal that previous guest wrote in. It was nice to see and help feel connected to others. I wasn't expecting breakfast, but was pleasantly surprised to see all the fresh fruit, yogurt, drinks and other variety of food and drinks available. The couple who owns this are Christian and had a lot of Christian decorations -- I was not a fan of that, but whatever, they own it and to each their own. …

A room in the heart of a jungle. Very convenient location from Volcano National Park. Long driveway had flowering vegetation along the way and was well trimmed for visibility. Parking right next to building, and greeted by host shortly after arrival. Room 6 had a covered front patio with ceiling fan. Room was an eclectic mix of bohemian and do-it-yourselfer. Bed was comfortable, with reading lights on each side. Host provided good selection of breakfast items: Juice, yogurt, fruit, coffee, tea, biscotti, and granola bars. Bench in “breakfast nook” was lightly padded, but a little far from the structure used as a table. Seating was limited to the bed and the breakfast nook. Room had no A/C, but windows were plentiful and air was cool. Ceiling fan kept it moving. Bathroom had lots of mirrors and two ledges for toiletries. Shower was large, with shower heads on each end. Block glass added exterior light. It was made to look like lava, but the rocky floor, while smooth, was uncomfortable on the feet. Host provided large silicone bath mat, which helped. We stayed in Room 6, which had a Host-created “terrarium.” It was full sized, and closed off from the room. Had interior lighting that could be turned on and off with switch. Appears to have previously been a bathroom. Window was covered with stained glass cling, and large plexiglass slabs were added for additional light. Tub was covered to look like lava pools. Several living plants, an irrigation system and misting hoses have been added. Appears to be a work in progress, as it appeared differently from photos on website. Back side of shower wall appears on the right. Despite the quirky appearance of the room and the surprise of a full sized terrarium, room had everything we needed and was extremely clean, including the outside patio, which was free of dust, mud and dead vegetation.…

I traveled with my daughter, who lives on Oahu. We only had two days and 1 night on the Big Island and we liked the convenient location to Volcanoes NP and comments about the forested setting. Unfortunately it rained fairly hard from the time we arrived til late that evening and we could not explore the lush grounds. We liked the chorus of the introduced Coqui Tree Frogs, and went to bed with the windows open so we could hear them (the folks on Oahu were less tolerant of the nose they make!) the property was perfectly fine, the room we had (no. 3) was perfect as it had a bed for my daughter and a larger one for me, with adequate separation for privacy. They included some fruit yougurt and snacks as part of the 'continental breakfast". I had the tangerines and orange, which were delicious, my daughter said the other fruits (mango and papaya were overripe and not terribly palatable. the bathroom was fine and the kitchenette was useful to reheat leftovers. the price was competitive, and I think we would be happy to stay here again if we get the chance to get back to the Big Island.…

Book only if you’re desperate. This is a budget place and is overpriced. Run by rude people, poor customer service, they like to argue. Confusing check in (“If you don’t know what room you’re in then I’ll have to go look it up for you!”). A point in the direction of a large square “lodge.” I imagine they get few repeat guests. Confusing parking (made us move our car from one empty spot to another, in the pouring rain), a huge spider in the bathroom and cobwebs all along the banister on the lanai. The room was clean but shabby, the bed was comfortable, the bed linens did not smell fresh. The kitchen appliances were clean and new and it was spacious. There was nothing else available and I’d never go back.

Our quaint room felt like a charming treehouse, with a sprawling veranda overlooking a jungle Even going to the entrance of the lava tubes was exhilarating. Room was clean and cool. You’re at 4000 feet. The hosts were very accommodating and hospitable. Nearby Volcano Park is a must-well worth it.

Aloha crater lodge is a very unique spot with a great location. We rented the Orchid Suite for one night. Dealing with the owners was great and they were very friendly when we pulled up. The room was nicely appointed and was unlike anything I have stayed in. The room seemed really clean and had plenty of small touches that set this place apart. A bunch of snacks were on the table and fridge for you to enjoy. The bathroom was cool and the rock shower was one of a kind! The room does not have an air conditioner which was not an issue when we were there but something to be aware about. Small complaints are at the time of writing the hot tub was broken l, hopefully fixed soon! Another is the blinds are thin in the sleeping area so on the ground floor privacy is minimal. It’s a great place and I highly recommend it for couples especially if you are looking to be close to Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park.…

*the photos are the condition jucuzzi and the other photos are proving that I cleaned the room before I left, cleaning floors and bathroom as well as removing bedding and putting them in convenient piles on the floor with the used towels* The place was a good location for volcano, not worth it though. When we arrived the female host was a bit aggressive toward us and made us feel uncomfortable. The house very much looked as it does in the photos on the outside The host said since we had a dog she was going to remove the rugs since they do not have time to clean them between guests, (this is posted on her ad” but the rugs were on the floor when we arrived and were filthy. The bedding as far as the sheets and pillow cases smelled and appeared clean, but the top blankets were clearly not cleaned recently and were dusty as well as smelled like mildew. The throw pillows were unable to be washed so we didn’t not use them. They were dusty and mildew as well The floors were disgusting. The only sponge for dishes and the “kitchen” was stored unpackaged on the floor by the toilet scrubber and dish soap. Beware This is not a kitchen it’s a bathroom sink with a mini fridge and some dishes. The hot tub could be a nice touch but it was very dirty in the water and the vents were gross so we spent little time in there. When we went to rinse off after the hot tub there was no hot water or pressure. We told the host and they said there was. I guess just not while we were staying there. Then some creepy guy who I assume was the make host tried to come into our room and he was always staring and creeping around. The shared walls are thin to the other Airbnb. After we complained and asked for a partial refund the host left a dishonest review of me as a guest on my Airbnb saying we trashed the place and it took them two hours to clean it, but I took photos of the place and how we cleaned it and left it in better condition then we found it. She also tried to blame us for “bombing the hot tub” whatever that means 😂😂 we were there for a day, that hot tub has years of neglect and abuse.…

Response from Shannon Fisher, Owner at Aloha Crater Lodge
Responded 28 Apr 2021
This review entails a lot of complaints, too many to address. The main issue we should look at are the Airbnb policies because this reservation was made thru Airbnb. Basically any problems/issues that can not be fixed on our end (Aloha Crater Lodge) would require a cancellation/refund and a relocation for the Guest thru Airbnb. Leah's issues/complaints described were not presented to Airbnb at any time until after they actually stayed thru the night. If the complaints were not first filtered thru Airbnb then Airbnb can not refund nor can we. Actually, no matter how our Guests reserve a room if there is a problem between the Guest and the lodging we can only offer a cancellation/refund if a discrepancy is brought to our attention right away. If the issue is unresolvable we will release the reservation and refund accordingly. One of Leah's issues came to our attention directly by messaging, no hot water, this was addressed immediately when we pointed out the shower handle direction to the "H" for hot water and they said it was ok. When Leah arrived she inquired about adding a 4th person and we waived the extra person fee. Extra towels were available in the room and instead of 4 towels they used 8 sets of towels. On check out everything that could be washed in the washer was washed because they had their doggo so comforters/blankets, pillows, throw rugs, cushions et all, in preparation of the next Guest arrival (the same day). It was unfortunate that the Guests in the neighboring room wanted to use the jacuzzi however Leah and her friends, totaling 6 people, were in the jacuzzi all night . One question? If you complained that the jacuzzi was not well, dirty, why did you and your friends stay in for sooo long? Lastly, Leah, your cleaning skills leave a lot to be desired. We cleaned the coffee spilled on the floor and chair cushions. We actually washed/dried 4 loads of laundry that you and your friends used, remade the beds , wiped down and cleaned the bathroom/kitchenette and did everything else that needed to be done for the next check in (the same day). It is possible that Leah stayed here with her friends, reenacting naked and afraid and then purposely intended on getting a refund afterwards. Her complaints, poor reviews across the board and "documenting with photos" their discrepancies/complaints while not adhering to any relevant policies, not requesting a formal cancellation thru Airbnb leave something to be questioned. Her request for a complete refund came in the moment she checked out. Our review posted on Airbnb was made right away and we expected a poor review on her end because we refused her request for a full refund after she and her 5 friends stayed thru the night with us.
