We had never stayed at a Royal Sonesta hotel but this used to be one of our favorite hotels when it was run by Marriott. We were nervous to book Royal Sonesta based on reviews - but we decided to try it for one night and were sorely disappointed. The check-in procedure took one hour even though there was only one party before us. We were placed in a room next to the hotel dumpster for nearly $500 per night and denied any request to move rooms. The food options on site are not nearly as good as they used to be. The staff seemed dejected. We were charged for items we didn't purchase, etc. Our overall impression was the Royal Sonesta had not maintained quality and was "cost-cutting" everywhere. TIP: Apparently if you like the location and the pool you can still book through Marriott and stay in the other two wings (called Marriott Kalapaki Beach Club).

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed at the Royal Sonesta but the resort property is shared with Marriott Vacation Club. The pool was massive and allowed for plenty of space for all guests. There was a separate, smaller pool with slide for the littles. We could sit at the pool and overlook the beach and ocean, while enjoying poolside service. There were plenty of chairs and umbrellas for the guests. There were also chairs on the grassy area by the beach for guests, but those had more limited availability. The room was nice and spacious with an efficient balcony with an incredible view of the pool, beach, ocean, and cliffs. The resort had multiple restaurants but there was also an area across the street with multiple options and a convenience store with alcohol, some food and snacks, souvenirs, etc next door. The hotel provided complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, which we also used when we had a helicopter tour of the island. We were on an anniversary trip but we also saw several families, so the resort is great for both couples and families.

The hotel looks really good, the rooms are clean and the staff is nice. Drinks and foods at the pool are expensive ($80 for 4 mojitos)… but the worse is the constant noise from the construction. They literally put you in a room and the construction happens in the room above yours. Also we just got a note that our room might not have water from 9am to 3pm. I think hotel management doesn’t understand that guests had to save a lot of money to come to their place and that they expect minimal respect and consideration when they pay +$300 per night. Not getting my business ever again. Sorry.

We read the reviews regarding the construction for renovations at the resort and called them directly. They assured us we would not have to be concerned about any construction noise or inconveniences. They were good to their word and we had no issues. Let me preface - this is Hawaii - it's beautiful. The resort itself was a bit pricey and for the price, I would have expected more. Although the room was clean, the room is outdated and run down - hence the renovations. Unfortunately, due to lack of staff, there was no room service during our week. Meaning - if you needed fresh towels, you called down and they brought them to you in a plastic bag on the floor inside the door. Not what I expected from a resort. Anytime we needed towels, soap, shampoo even toilet paper, we had to call and it would be delivered the same way. I will say the food at all 3 restaurants is a 10 out of 10. Just delicious. The wait staff were all extremely kind and courteous. The bay the resort sits on is beautiful sandy beach. Great for swimming and paddle board. Not great snorkeling. There is a processing plant to the right of the bay which is odd from a view perspective especially when the barge leaves and goes out to sea. If you are considering this resort, I would wait until the renovations are complete and hopefully they have more staff soon.

This review is about the fitness room run by Sonesta and shared with the Marriott Vacation Club which I belong to. The place is really run down and going down hill. They have lost half the cardio equipment and I’m not talking about shutting down every other piece due to covid. The rower is busted with no foot support on the left. No recumbent bicycles anymore. Can’t keep two wipe down pull outs filled. Worst part is the security guard. No one in the two rooms. I pull my mask down which is required for the room but there’s no one else in the room. Plenty of social distance room. The security guy comes in and says “you have to wear the mask.” I told him I pull it up when someone else comes in. He says if he catches me without the mask I’ll be asked to leave even with no one else in the room. Staff here used to be friendly and understanding but not this guy. Would not recommend the fitness room. Too much equipment is going bad (two of the three ellipticals have a motion thump so needs to be fixed). The cleaners do come in on a regular schedule so they are doing a good job but the security guy left a bad taste and very unfriendly image for me a paying guest and one who uses the gym for up to 3 hours a day.
