Affordable option, especially for the solo traveller. Great facilities, very friendly and helpful staff. Perfect location for exploring the city and really enjoyed the free dinners and breakfast and using the communal space.

This is my first 5 star review of any hotel I have ever stayed in, and the Green Tortoise Hostel (GTH) earned it in absolutely every way. Now, I have stayed in much nicer hotels over the years, but the first question that needs to be answered when giving a 5-star review would be; did it exceed my expectations. And...

There are a lot of things to love about Green Tortoise: the kitchen's awesome, as is the included breakfast, and the free dinner system (even on days when there aren't free dinners, there was usually a box of leftover edible things up for grabs). And the lavender-scented products in the showers are great! Ditto for location: City Lights is literally...

If you're looking for a hostel to go to bars from and see the san fran sights this is perfect. Pretty much everything walking distance and the best bars literally round the corner. The hostel itself is very clean, staff very accommodating and so many recommendations for bars places to eat etc available from the lobby. The free breakfast is...

I've stayed at the hostel several times however this most recent trip in a private room was...wonderful. The staff remembered my name from a week ago, the bed was freaking amazing. Only small downside was the tv that did not work, yes I did follow the detailed but obscure directions. I'd have been more satisfied with NO TV! :-)

Hi Tim, Thanks for the great review. Our private rooms are small and cozy but do the trick if you aren't after all the frills. The configurations is that of an old European style hotel with bathrooms down the hall and appeal to the backpacker and business traveler alike. We have heard a few people our media option. We don't...

We stayed for 4 nights, it felt like the only alternative in super expensive San Francisco. We stayed in a private room and it's small but has a sink. It also has a chair and a small bed but nothing more. Since the room is so small it would be great to have some shelfs on the wall to put...

Thanks for your detailed review highlighting all the good points about our "all-inclusive" hostel and location. Our private rooms are small but cozy, generally well appointed. Your suggestion of shelves is a good one, we had already started putting them in some of the other private rooms and will also do it in the one you stayed. It's a shame...

Staying here was ok it was clean and good size room. Although there is some nice staff. Whilst leaving our suitcases behind the desk (which guests are allowed to do). I was about to leave then realised I had left something in the bag. As I went to retrieve it I was told by a young woman rather rudely 'next...

Stayed at the Green Tortoise after being recommended it by a few people I met on my travels this past summer, thankfully the tip was spot on! Myself and a friend of mine thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night's here. Our room's whilst not overflowing with room were adequate enough, although the lockers under the beds could do with some maintenance...

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
