We stayed 6 nights in this little North Beach gem. The rooms are small and cozy - more like an English B&B or guesthouse than a traditional hotel. We had some misgivings about the shared bathrooms but needn't have worried. There are a number of bathrooms throughout the hotel all of which were immaculately clean. I didn't mind popping down...

Our first stay here at this special and lovely hotel was in April 2016. So there was no doubt that we would choose this hotel again this year. Super friendly staff and extraordinary ambiance. Washrooms and showers in the hallway always superclean. If you should want something different than standard hotels - this is it.

Staff are warm, welcoming & helpful. Our 2nd stay here in 2 years & hope to make it 3. Very clean & no waiting for amenities even if it is shared - no ensuites. The beds are so comfortable too. A cosy home away from home. The hotels location is perfect too. We could walk everywhere from Fishermans wharf to...

Thank you so much for your review. It is wonderful that this is your second stay, it encourages us when our guests return time after time. We are glad that you enjoyed our comfortable beds, next time you can also try our massage chairs. They are great to relax after a long day of walking in San Francisco. It will...

This hotel was perfect for a couple of low maintenance gals on their first trip to Cali. It didn't break the bank and had a charming old world/vintage feel. There is a lot of history to this hotel and some even say it is haunted. We had fun pretending that a blowing curtain may have been a ghost and overall...

I stayed 1 night at this charming, old fashioned hotel. I did not book the hotel myself, but my traveling companion said it was a good value for the city. It's in a quiet neighborhood, walking distance to North Beach. Our triple room (1 double bed and 1 single bed) was very small, but pleasant and clean. The shared bathrooms...

Nice place, like an upscale hostel. Bathrooms are shared but you have a private room. We had a cheaper room so it had a window only to the hotel corridor. Everything was very clean! Staff is friendly. It can get noisy in the night so hope for quiet neighbours. We would stay here again.

The hotel is in a perfect location in San Francisco...short walk to pier 39 and walkable to all the major attractions of the city. The hotel itself was not to my taste at all. The bathrooms are shared on each floor so felt like a dorm more than a hotel. Our bedroom was tiny and just fit a double bed...

Thank you for your comments, we are glad that you found our location to be a good one. We regret that our hotel did not meet your needs. Our indoor rooms (the one you mention in this review) are the most economical ones. Our Family Suites, two adjacent rooms with a pocket door, are still very affordable and grant the...

It'd only been two years since my last trip, yet all bedspring sets and wall decor had been exchanged, and WoW! Did I ever sleep well!😊😴☺️👍👏 I love the atmosphere here and the way Robert and his team strive to make everyone feel welcome and at home in this turn-of-the-19th/20th-century jewel. This is my all-time favorite time-capsule hotel😍❤️❣️

Traveling with my 19 year old son so the twin beds were great. Location was close to many attractions and felt safe. Parking was close enough and staff shared strategies for free street parking our last night as we had to leave at 3:30am for the airport. Our first flight was canceled and they did everything they could to extend...

I'm a single parent who loves to travel with my daughter. Thank god for places like this that help make traveling more affordable, especially in an expensive city like San Francisco. I booked through a third-party site and got a great deal for two nights. We also got a room with a window facing outside-fresh air! Some rooms only have...

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
