What a gem! This special, quaint hotel was more than we expected. The photos and website do not match up to it's charm. The staff was wonderful both on the phone and once there. It was exceptionally clean and the shared bathrooms/showers, immaculate. We've tried several budget-friendly boutique hotels/hostels in San Francisco in the past year, but we'll stop looking... I booked at San Remo last minute due to previous accommodation being cancelled, and I am so happy things worked out the way they did! We wanted to stay somewhere close to Fisherman's Wharf, and the location of this hotel did not disappoint. It is only a few blocks away from the wharf, Pier 39 and all the area has... More

Fantastic location just a few blocks south of Fisherman's Wharf. This place has been in operation for over 100 years and it shows (in a good way). Lots of antique art and architecture hanging around. The classical atmosphere creates happiness amongst everyone and it shows. Doors are left open for unoccupied rooms and noticed every room is quite unique. Laundry... More

If you want old style San Francisco then this hotel meets it.Built in 1906 to house workers re-building the city after the earthquake and fire,it still keeps its old world charm.Rooms smallish but big enough to sleep in .Beds comfortable if slightly short. No drinks in the room which would be nice, but Starbucks two blocks away and opens at 5am.Shared bathrooms... I travelled to San Francisco on an overnight trip a couple of weeks back, and the San Remo Hotel was perfect for my needs. The location was fantastic, just a short walk to the Fisherman's Wharf area and to the Big Bus tour buses, with supermarkets and pharmacies close by too. The room itself had an "old time" feel to... Hard to explain how cool it is - from an past era but very cool. My wife is very particular (hates shared amenities), but she raved about the San Remo - the character, quaintness and small touches. Great location, good service, incredibly unique place to stay. Not expensive for San Francisco. There were four of us and we all LOVED... More

I loved the San Remo Hotel. The location is brilliant, literally a 5 minute walk away from fisherman's wharf and a short drive from the golden gate bridge. It was really interesting and unlike any other place I have ever stayed, the rooms were small but cosy with comfortable beds. The decor was great with framed photos all over the... More

Well, for the location you cannot do any better. Super cute and very helpful staff. You are in one of the best areas of San Fransico, no need for a car. If you are a typical New Yorker, who loves to walk this is your place. Unique....in every way.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
