Lovely place with nice and helpful staff. The room was clean and cosy. We enjoyed staying there on holidays. There was a nice christmas tree in the lobby. Nothing to complain about. We will come back some day :)

Just the coolest decor! We stayed on the first floor, so didn't get the benefit of the sky-lit upper floors. If you don't mind taking your bag up the stairs, (really, you only do it once when you arrive, & once when you leave), the top floor has a great ambience. No smell as far as we can remember, The...

Rooms 1, 2, or 31 are the best rooms. First, they are on the second floor (there aren't any rooms on the first floor and you don't want to lug your stuff up the steps to the 3rd floor). Second, these three have a sink in each (so you don't have to use the public sink in the hall. Third,...

Thanks for your Three star review, yes we are not everyone's cup of tea, we make it clear to everyone who calls that the San Remo is a1906 European style historic hotel with shared baths down the hall. They are private though, and not open to the "public", but they are in no way akin to porta-potties. There are many...

This is our favorite hotel in San Francisco that we have been staying at for 15 years whenever vacation brings us back to San Francisco. We have never had any issues and the staff and management are top notch to say the least. We highly recommend the San Remo Hotel and will be back in June and July for a...

Thank you so much for your 5 STAR REVIEW!, We strive to be one of the best budget hotels on the planet as well as offering some 5 Star hotel amenities for our guests. We've recently added Gilcrest & Soames soaps and conditioners to our baths and in-room basins. Our coffee/beverage station and internet kiosk are complementary and we just...

My husband and I recently returned to the San Remo about 15 years after we got engaged there. When we arrived, the whole staff came out to welcome us back. This time, we stayed in the penthouse and it was totally worth it. The charm of this special hotel has only improved with time. A family owned establishment, the San...

This is a wonderful story! We are very happy to have been the place where you got engaged, and to know that it brings good memories. Having guest like you come back several times definitely makes working at the San Remo a place where you meet and welcome back old friends. We are glad that you enjoyed the Penthouse. Hope...

After many stays at this delightful little hotel, I'm finally taking the time to write a review. First off, in all the places I've traveled in the world, this really is one of my most favorite hotels. The check in staff is always friendly and quick to assist in anything you might need. The rooms are small, yes, however they...

THANK YOU Irish Traveling Girl for your lovely review and all the years you've made San Remo your home away from Portland when visiting in SF. Our diligent staff does scurry about at 5k speed tidying up our shared baths. This past year we installed WaterPik hand-held shower heads with multiple settings including a steamer setting, I tested them at...

If you want to see how Grandpa and Grandma lived 100 years ago take a small adventure and stay at the San Remo Hotel. This cute and quirky place is very charming. It's old but the floors don't squeak. It's clean, truly historic and the staff is helpful and friendly. The hotel is just a couple blocks from the wharfs...

Thanks Mikeblaster for your erudite review, you could be a travel writer! From the pre-internet days, we have amassed a nice library of travel guide books left behind by guests not wanting to lug them back home. We don't see this anymore now that informed travelers do their research over the internet, mobil devices or the Garmin while on the...

We stayed here in Novemeber 2014 and had a lovely stay, it was our first time having a shared bathroom and it was surprisingly ok, the hotels in San Francisco are quite expensive however we were pleasantly surprised with the shared bathroom facilities. Management response:

Thanks for your 5 STAR review Hannah M!, and enjoy your journey across America. Our rooms are smallish, the Inn was constructed in 1906 and habited mostly back then by sailors between ships. One tip is to upgrade to one of our family suites and you'll have two of our historic rooms below what you would pay for a double...

I was the other half staying with Nowradiance at San Remo in early December 2014. While the managements reply to Nowradiance's review was very structured, I also experienced the same things. We are sorry this guest did not enjoy his stay at our inn. After speaking with all staff members who had contacts with this reviewer we feel we did our best to accommodate him. Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
