The Crowne Plaza, Times Square in Manhattan has been my hotel of preference in New York for a great many years. This was my first return since Covid and I was very taken aback by how far standards have slipped, so much so that I have needed to remove it from being the recommended Manhattan hotel to my clients. The hotel has lost direction in virtually every way possible and only just attains the standard of a 3* hotel. Gone are the days when it comfortably provided 4* standards and service. The rooms are timeworn and haven't been upgraded for years. Whilst my room was generally clean, I was shocked to find that the extractor vent in the bathroom had caked on dirt (see photo). There were no bath robes in the bathroom and it was unbelievable that the drinking cups in the bathroom were made of cheap plastic. The bed was comfortable and the room temperature could be controlled with ease. I was shocked beyond measure to find that the hotel no longer provides a breakfast service and I find this to be totally unacceptable. This was not mentioned on the website. It is a disgrace that guests need to leave the hotel to eat breakfast. The hotel also used to have an onsite gym that was part of a local New York chain. That has now closed down but, again, there was no mention of this on the website. The only staff members who showed any interest in guests were the receptionists. They were clearly embarassed at the degraded service and suggested quite openly that the management cared only about income streams. About 100 hotels in New York now charge a ridiculous Resort Fee, Crowne Plaza, Times Square is one of them. IHG needs to recognise that this hote is not a resort and their claim that it covers internet and phone calls is insulting. IHG 1 status boasts that members receive free internet connection. Is this not a contradictory statement since IHG 1 guests are not exempt from the Resort Fee? In this day and age who makes phone calls from their hotel room when everyone carries a mobile phone and has internet connection for video chat? The concept of Resort Fees is nothing short of a money spinner for the hotels, and one that does not serve breakfast at that. I am aghast that this fee is also levied on IHG 1 guests who are using reward nights. Have the number of points needed for a night's accommodation been decreased as a consequence? They have not. They have in fact increased. I must recognise the service provided by Evelyn M on reception. She was animated and very friendly and she was the one highlight of my stay. IHG and Crowne Plaza Times Square is on very shaky ground at present and I would not even consider setting foot on the premises again when there is a new Kimpton hotel (part of the IHG group) just around the corner. This reviewer is not impressed

Ignore the negative reviews!! Currently staying at the hotel, checked in 01.02.2024. Check in staff amazing, very friendly and welcoming. Room on the 44th floor, excellent views! Room was a little hot, just turned the heating off and opened the window, no issues at all. Then during the night I put the heating on lowest and the room was perfect. Had a lovely breakfast in the little cafe by the lobby/reception. Wifi, really good and fast. Hotel bar and food, good staff very friendly. Contacted guest services and 4 bottles of water were brought to my room within a few minutes. Again excellent. A big fan of Times Square, its literally on the doorstep along with broadway. Amazing location. Will stay here again. My only negative, Some of the light switches don’t work. However, doesn’t really bother me. But open and honest reviews require positive and negative. :-) (if any)

I had made a reservation for one night. Plans changed and needed to extend for two nights. Called the hotel twice but no one answered. So I called the 800 IGH reservation number. They extended my stay but ended up giving me a second confirmation number. When I tried to check in, the clerk first could not find the second reservation. I gave her the confirmation number and she found it. Then told me I would have to check out in the morning and check back in for the second night. That is not acceptable and 20 minutes later, this was cleared up by a manger. Went to the room, thermostat was broken. Maintenance came up and confirmed it was broken and then told me even with a good thermostat, I could not have heat. It was turned off in the entire hotel. It was 47 degrees out. They brought me a space heater. Went down for dinner. the restaurant is closed. only the bar is open. Ask for a dinner menu. the only thing they serve, in the entire hotel for dinner, is bar food like chicken wings. Not even a hamburger. When I was leaving the line at the desk was very long so I just left. Got an email thanking me for my stay with a link to get a copy of my bill. The link doesn't work. I called the hotel every day for 4 days and left a VM. no one ever called back. Day 5 I called IHG and opened a complaint. Still no one called back. two days later I get a receipt for less than half of the amount they charged to my credit card. Called the hotel again, no answer like normal. Called IHG again. They put me on hold and called the hotel. No answer for them either. They sent the hotel a fax and said there is nothing they can. This is one of the largest hotel chains in the country and they can't help.

I live in CT, but go into NYC quite often. When I am going to the theatre or Lincoln Center, I appreciate the convenience the Crowne Plaza Hotel affords me, literally a short walk to most theatres. In the past, I have experienced some of the issues with room temperature and hot water that some reviewers have mentioned. However, during my last few stays, those problems seem to have been addressed, by and large. My last stay was very pleasant, primarily due to Victoria, the woman who checked me in at the front desk. Of the dozens of stays I have had in New York, nobody comes up to the standard set by her. There have been times in this same hotel when my check in ranged from professional, friendly, and efficient, to bored and going through the motions. Victoria made me feel that she was happy to welcome me and went out of her way to treat me with the friendly professionalism that should be the norm in any hotel. So much of a guest’s experience depends on his or her initial intake experience. In this post Covid era, one would think every hotel would try to up their game. This should especially be the case in this hotel, since they lack an on-site sit down eating option due to their restaurant never reopening after the pandemic. While that is a decided disadvantage, a pleasant welcome would go a long way towards soothing guests’ disappointment.

Frank, Thanks for your kind words regarding your frequent stays with us at Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan. We strive to offer an excellent location for our guests, and we're glad the convenience works to your advantage. While we acknowledge concerns from the past, we continuously aim to improve the hotel's services based on such feedback. It's encouraging to see that you've noticed these efforts. Above all, we're delighted to hear your positive comments about Victoria. Our team members are indeed the heart of our hotel and she embodies the friendly professionalism we strive to portray. Your feedback serves as a wonderful affirmation of her efforts and will surely motivate the entire team. We understand your sentiments about the absence of an on-site restaurant, as this has been a distinctive logistical shift due to the post-pandemic circumstances. As we navigate this new landscape, we hope that our warm welcome and commitment to service will continue to make your stays enjoyable. We look forward to hosting you again during your next theatre or Lincoln Center visit. Warm regards, Alex K. Social Media Manager

Terrible stay for this diamond elite member. Only one person at the desk so no special check in line. Waited about 15-20 mins to check in. Asked for the free breakfast and was told they don’t do anything for diamond elite. First hotel since we received our status where they do zero for you. Thats why we stay with IHG. Then we got to the room, no fridge, that’s a $30 charge - wow! I never pay for in room fridge at other hotels. The real issue for us was the heat at night. This hotel only has the ability to heat all rooms or cool all rooms in the hotel. So our room was 78 degrees at night. When we called they told us to open the window for cooling. That cooked the room to 76 degrees. Awful stay to say the least. Barely a worker available to speak English, managers never on duty or available. Zero seating in the lobby meanwhile there is an empty restaurant area full of seating that nobody can use so the lobby has a very unpleasant feeling to it. For Crown Plaza we have grown to expect way way more than we got at this Times Square property. Won’t be back.

Aaron M, your feedback is important to us, and we understand a few aspects of your visit were not up to the standard that you have come to expect as a loyal member of our rewards program. Our aim is to ensure express check-in for our valued guests, and we regret the delay you experienced at our reception. We also acknowledge your remarks on the breakfast benefit and the additional changes concerning in-room amenities. Addressing the room temperature issue, we do offer central heating and cooling for our guest's comfort, and it seems this was not suitable for you during your stay. We take notes on the open window suggestion for managing room temperature. Our team members are available round the clock for assistance, and understanding each guest's requirements is our top priority. We are sorry to hear about your experience with manager availability and language skills. Also, we acknowledge your feedback on the lobby seating. Your experiences feed into how we can improve, and we are thankful for your loyalty to the brand. We hope that we can persuade you to change your mind about returning. Please do reconsider. Thank you for your feedback. Warm regards, Alex K. Social Media Manager

Pros: The hotel is in an excellent location, just steps away from Broadway. Upon entering the hotel late at night (around 10ish), we appreciated the security measure of being asked to show our room card, providing a sense of safety. The staff was generally friendly and helpful, and I was pleasantly surprised to be allowed an early check-in, albeit I wish I had waited. The beds were pretty comfortable, and the abundance of charger ports throughout the room was convenient. The elevators were fast and there was hardly ever a wait. Cons: The small entrance made the hotel somewhat challenging to spot. Unexpected additional taxes and fees were a downside. Unfortunately, our room was not up to par upon arrival. Although offered a new room due to used towels in the bathroom, I assumed it was a simple oversight by housekeeping. However, my optimism faded when I discovered a hair in the bathtub later on. The following day, we noticed a hole in the wall behind the door and stains on the chair. Then, we couldn't get the temperature in our room to go below 74 degrees. When we reached out to maintenance, we were informed that there was no air conditioning in March (considered winter), and the suggested solution was to open a window. Eventually, a fan was provided. Additionally, it's worth noting that, while my oversight, the room lacked a refrigerator and microwave, leading to a lot of wasted food. Oh, and my daughters later found a long hair that did not belong to any of us. Plus, we found a towel folded on the nightstand that I had assumed my daughter put there. Turns out it was there when we checked in. Another disappointment regarding cleanliness.

It's disappointing to learn that your experience did not meet your expectations. It's great that you found the location convenient and our security measures commendable. We appreciate this feedback about your experience with our early check-in and the comfort amenities provided in the room. On the other hand, we empathize with the inconvenience you experienced regarding the room condition. We will certainly prioritize addressing such matters to ensure a more pleasing experience in the future. Your comments about the additional taxes and fees, temperature control limitations and missing amenities have been noted and shared with the relevant teams to review. The cleanliness issues you encountered are certainly not reflective of our usual standards. We assure you that our team members are committed to providing clean and comfortable rooms for all guests. Trust that we will strive harder to improve on this front. We hope that you will provide us another opportunity to better serve you in the future, promising an enhanced and enjoyable stay. This hotel is amazing. We were worried because of the review and even called hotel to almost cancelling but glad that we did not. The hotel is great. The room is cool and comfortable, the temperature was never a problem. The location is amazing. The staff from fromt desk, guest services, housekeeping are all very friendly and accomodating. If you are worried about reviews, give them a call. They will make sure you will have peace of mind and when you get there, it will be very comfortable. Great hotel, great location. Will definitely book here again!

I had no intention of providing a negative review. However, when four months have passed and the resolution promised to me has not happened, I am now compelled to tell this story. My friend and I had a very unpleasant stay at CPTS on 11/12. Started with check in. Went to our room, key did not work. Went back downstairs where key was reprogrammed. Back upstairs still did not work. Called desk as was advised to do, was told security would be there to reprogram lock. Waited 30 minutes in hall, no one came. Went back downstairs (third time) and was told they would be there. Returned to room, waited another few minutes and security came. They were very apologetic, and said they were never told to come. At 10:30 went to shower, no hot water. Tried to call desk from phone in room, phone did not work. Called number from website on cell, could not get through. Finally reached someone. Snarky maintenance man came, said we needed to let water run for a few minutes. I explained we let it run 1/2 hour! Not even warm. Bedside lamp would not turn off, had to unplug it. Room temperature would not go below 75°. Window latch broken, could not crack window for ventilation. Room was 79° when we got up. Upon check out, we shared our issues with a very sympathetic night auditor. Mr. R. Was extremely polite, and listened to our concerns that were also presented to him in a very calm manner. I used points and cash to pay for room. Mr. R. Promised to refund my amount paid to my card. I explained I did not care about the points. Well, here we are four months later, no refund. I spoke with Mr. R on November 28th and again was promised a return of my funds. I have never been anything but polite in my interactions, as he was as well. I just want what was promised to me. I have made numerous more attempts to call, and cannot reach anyone. Tried to email with the email address on the business card, only for it to be returned as I am “outside the network “ I am so disappointed that I have had to go resort to this to get anyone’s attention! It probably still will go ignored, but at least I am heard. I must repeat that security, and Mr. R were very polite.

Our family was fortunate to be able to visit NYC over the weekend of Feb.09. We booked and stayed at the Crowne Plaza Times Square. We had an absolute terrible experience with the hotel. We were sweating and extremely hot in our room. The thermostat was set on a high temp. It was a mild weekend in NYC. The front desk could not unlock the thermostat nor assist us. We barely slept due to the heat. Soon as we came home we called the hotel. Though we were promised a call back, no one has called us back nearly two weeks later. They really do not provide good service nor do they care about their guests. This is just terrible! We will never stay here again!
