Since first opening its doors in 1926, the InterContinental New York Barclay has welcomed countless guests to enjoy a luxurious residential-style experience in the heart of the city. Originally constructed as part of the Grand Central Terminal expansion, The Barclay became one of four notable railroad hotels built to service the well-heeled men and women travelling to New York City. Its convenient location, directly above the railroad tracks, permitted the hotel the unique distinction of having its own platform in the basement, ideal for the upscale rail traveler who occasionally arrived by private train car. In addition to its Midtown East location, the hotel made an immediate impact with tenants and critics alike for its characteristic atmosphere of comfort and elegant domesticity. From that moment, The Barclay began to write its history as the hotel of choice for those looking to take respite in this stately residential hotel of international prestige. Today, the InterContinental New York Barclay remains Manhattan’s preeminent luxury hotel after undergoing the most ambitious restoration in its history. Combining sophistication and contemporary design, while staying true to its original Federalist style details, The Barclay exudes confidence and warmth, delivering the same residential feel with modern comfort and flexibility introduced to the world in 1926.

An excellent hotel to stay in the center of Manhattan. A great location next to Madison and 5th Avenue as well as Central Park. Rooms are modern and quiet. In-room dining is quite expensive and not to the level of expected quality.

The hotel staff are amazing but the showers are pretty poor--not great water pressure. All in all a pleasant stay, the area is great if you are exploring nyc, the bar is very expensive so think twice about drinking there.

Hello Jo O, Thank you for staying with us and sharing this feedback. We generally get positive comments on our shower and bathroom experience so we will be sure to look in to this. We also appreciate the feedback on the bar pricing, and are always looking to ensure we are appropriately placed in the market. Do let us know if we can be of service at the Barclay in the future. Best, Jeff Krauthamer Hotel Manager

I'm not a tourist in NYC, and ended up at this hotel on a last-minute whim. The service was great and the room beautiful, large for city standards. We did order one thing from the room service menu which was just ok, between the $18 item and all the fees for room service it

Did a short springtime trip to NYC to see some plays and randomly booked the Barclay. Was I ever surprised. On first arrival, the lobby is stunning but I worried it was maybe just a bit outdated or stuffy. However, I have to say every single thing about this hotel is top notch

The Barclay benefits from a revamp the lobby, bar and communal areas are fresh, clean and stylish. The room we stayed in was also freshly refurbished and was a pleasure to stay in. The bathroom was well later out, appointed and immaculate. The bed, pillows etc where

There's no charge for either the wifi or the safe. I stayed there last week. There's also a great Diner for breakfast on East 50th.

We stayed at the Intercontinental Barclay in September and were charged a $30 a night Destiination fee. The taxes on that $30 were $2.66 sales tax and $1.76 city tax. That is $34.42/night. (this is approximately 27 pounds per night). Per the hotel’s website this destination fee entitles you to: “$25 Food & Beverage Credit per day, $15 Laundry/Dry Cleaning Credit per day, Premium High-Speed Internet Service, Free Local & International Calls, VIP Passes for discounts at Bloomingdales and The Shops at Columbus Circle at Time Warner Center” We did not use the laundry or coupons, but the internet worked well and we made sure that we used the $25 each day either in the Gin Parlour or the minibar. Both are expensive so the $25 does not go far. ( we love the hotel and the location by the way. We are staying there again in February!)

I would assume that the tax (destination fee) will be applied unless you have been notified otherwise. If unable to get an answer to this before arrival, I would raise your concern at the hotel when booking in. I found the staff generally most helpful.

Hi, we booked with BA and all charges were included so no nasty surprises! I can't answer for Virgin but I would say read through your booking details, I'm sure it will tell you somewhere like BA did. The hotel was fantastic, hope enjoy your trip!
