The Royalton New York garners approval for its excellent service and prime location, favored by guests for its proximity to attractions and transit. However, opinions diverge regarding the ambiance and rooms; some find the decor cozy yet outdated, urging a refresh. While the beds are comfortable and the rooms tidy, visitors often express discontent with the value, citing steep prices that don't align with the dated amenities and lack of dining options. Despite the clean environment, the hotel's entrance and signage leave guests puzzled.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend late last year and we had a great time. The lobby is very pretty and upon check-in we were upgraded to the disco whirlpool room. The pricing was transparent and fair; my boyfriend actually fell ill on our last night and they kindly extended our stay by two nights without incurring surcharge fees for daily price difference.

Room: The room was very cold upon entering, and we couldn't seem to get the heating unit to work well during our stay. The size of the room was generous for NYC, though the view was of the wall of another building. Everything was clean, but some furniture pieces looked tired and slightly worn. Bathroom amenities were scarce, though they had candles and matches, which we appreciated. The staff was very friendly and brought up wood for the fire our first night. The bed area was very put together and the bed was a dream to sleep on and get comfortable in. The TV was updated and we streamed a few movies during our stay.

The bathroom was where the age showed, as the floor was cold and uneven, the countertops looked dated, the toilet was definitely a decade or more old, and the whirlpool tub wall paneling uneven and frankly, cheap looking. In photos it doesn't show, which would make for good social media posts, if that matters to you.

Some four star hotels go above and beyond in amenities/extras/ service/ utilities and some don't. This was an average four star hotel of middling quality. Worth the price, but I wouldn't personally go back if wanted a staycation in the city (i.e. a leisure stay). Now, if my apartment flooded and I needed to stay somewhere for a night without breaking the bank, this would be a go-to.

Dear Marisa, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are excited to hear that your boyfriend and you had a great time at Royalton hotel and also enjoyed our beautifully appointed suite equipped with a fireplace and a soaking tub! Their space and decor truly make for a stunning accommodation and our fireplaces are a cozy addition to ensure that our guests are having the most relaxing stay possible. It's unfortunate that you've noticed a decline in the quality of our accommodations. We care about the comfort of our guests so we will address your concerns with our team moving forward. We hope for the opportunity to host you again in the near future for a memorable stay and thank you again for the feedback.

The staff and location are great. You can't get more central. If you want to be in the thick of Manhattan, this is the place. The rooms are comfortable. I chose this hotel purely for proximity to my office, though, not because I wanted a fun scene. The main reason I'd hesitate to come back is that the food service is not very accommodating of hotel guests. The nice day restaurant turns into a bar at 4pm, full of city workers drinking and loud music. You're not allowed to eat at the restaurant tables. And it's so dark. It's very much like walking through a nightclub to get to your room. I don't expect to sit at low bar tables to have dinner in a hotel I'm staying in, with loud music. I was there for work, but it's not very inviting for families either. What makes it worse is the lack of room service (most of this seems to be the norm in NY), so you really have nowhere to go for a quick, relaxed meal after work before bed. You have to go out. The breakfasts were ok, but expensive (like all food in NY). My main issue was that I felt like I was staying in a bar with bedrooms in the evenings, rather than a hotel. It's also a concern security-wise, to be a woman staying in a hotel alone and with a bar full of drinkers/party people downstairs, who are able to get in lifts and make it all the way to my hotel room door without any staff/key passes to enter the lifts, etc. It's not unusual to be able to walk in a hotel and access lifts (although in Asia, at least, you normally have to have a key card to move a lift), etc, but it is unusual to go from that bar-type scene to a bedroom door. I wouldn't want to stay there with kids. As I said, this is very much New York , but that doesn't make it any more inviting for me as a European there for formal work meetings. I can imagine a big group of friends looking for a fun, boozy weekend would love this place.

Standard room size with minimum amenities. Bathroom is not cleaned and maintaining the cleanliness is not feasible due to poor design of the room and unpractical selections. Housekeeping staffs do come early, be sure to place privacy card on the outside of the door if you are still in your room. Staffs are friendly and accommodating to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

We just stayed overnight in Loft Room 902 and we not impressed with the overall experience. Our room smelled of smoke, the bed was not a king as sold, and the overall cleanliness of not only the room but the overall common areas was sub-par. The carpets were dirty and the bathroom in need of major grout repair.

Further, it's just shy of offensive to leave water bottles out (a standard complimentary offering at 9 out of 10 hotels at which we've stayed) without any indication that there's an exorbitant charge associated.

The nickel-and-dime aspect of that exercise is disrespectful, particularly considering the $400 room cost + the $40 facilities fee.

Even worse, the hallways reeked of the smell of marijuana, and the elevators are so small that I could barely get me and my luggage inside at the same time.

Also, there are no signs indicating the location of the checkin desk. Upon checkin, we were given keys for a standard room, not for the loft room we booked. We had to point out the issue.

I've stayed here since 2003, several times a year, and would go nowhere else. It's in an ideal central location that manages also not to be too noisy/congested. The staff, many of whom are longstanding, are welcoming, friendly, helpful & sensible. There is a wide variety of rooms, depending on cost & one's requirements, and I am always given my preferred onw.

For the price you were expect exceptional service, design and special touches. This hotel has none of those things. Staff were perfectly nice but we were there for a special occasional and disappointed at the lack of effort to make our staff special. The room is small, with a fairly comfy king bed, uncomfortable couch and HUGE soaking tub but neither the design nor decoration seemed thought about. There is no room service or even a coffee maker. Bottles of water are left without even the benefit of a price to open them and for a room that’s clearly for two guests, there was only one robe and slippers. All small details but for the price I expected those details to be looked after (what justifies the price then?). To make matters worse, they charge a $30 “resort” or “facility” fee but there are no special facilities to use! Not a terrible hotel or anything but kind of a rip off.

The location of this hotel was perfect for us in that we could do so much in Midtown without using the subway. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful as well. The hotel was clean. My only criticism would be that the grout in the shower needs a deep cleaning.

We asked for any available upgrades and were sold on the loft room for an extra $100 dollars a day. It was completely not worth the extra fees. The bathroom ceiling had a bulge in it as if water was building up. There was a big crack in the mirror. The water temp for the shower/bath was unbearably hot. We had the temp knob turned all the way to cold and it was still steaming hot. Overall the room was ok. But the value for the upgrade was a terrible deal.

The Royalton was an excellent place to stay just a short walk from Times Square. Location is excellent. It is a nice little hotel with a nice lobby bar and friendly staff.

It is in a prime location without being too crazy or noises outside.

The only negative thing I can say is the basic room was pretty small with no view but that is what you have to expect when staying in midtown.

All around a great place and worth the price. 5 stars.

From the moment we walked thru the huge red door I was impressed by this hotel. I was looking to get away from the cookie cutter style of the chain hotels. This place did not disappoint. Hotel Tonight listed it as chic and that’s exactly right. We got checked in by Rocco and he inquired what brought us into the city and when I responded to celebrate my wife’s birthday he immediately upgraded our room and gave us free drink coupons. Once up in our deluxe room we were very impressed with the size. Everything was great. The view from from 1012 is not good but hey you can’t have everything in life. Dropped off our things and went down to enjoy a couple drinks before heading out for the night. The fireplace downstairs is magnificent. Chairs and leather couches accompany it with plenty of areas to sit. Heck even after dinner we came back and sat on the couch sipping our cocktails by the nice warm fire. Would absolutely stay here again. I highly recommend!!!!
