My husband and I spent three nights at BIR and we concur with all of the positive comments already noted. This is a quaint, cozy location and GiGi is the ideal host. The grounds are immaculate, our room was beautiful and the location is perfect. We stayed in the Seaside room and had a view of the ocean from our...

w: THE place to stay in Kailua-Kona....at least for us. Your experience: We recently spent seven nights at The Big Island Retreat (BIR) and loved it. It is where we will stay when we visit Kailua-Kona. You can look at the pictures on the website to get a feel for the rooms and the grounds - they represent it well....

This was the perfect location for our visit to Kona. Centrally located, clean, well equipped. We'll definitely be back. They had coolers, snorkels, beach chairs (and more) available to borrow for our adventures. We really appreciated Gigi's hospitality.

This is an open-air home with plantation-style architecture and center courtyard; despite the TripAdvisor category of B&B/Inn, it's neither (certainly no breakfast provided, and no housekeeping services). The property is located quite a way from the busy part of town, which meant lovely quiet nights without street lights. Be sure to bring the confirmation e-mail and directions with you, as...

This is the second time we have stayed at the Big Island Retreat, and this visit was just as wonderful as the last. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are very comfortable. My husband and I much prefer staying here over a sterile bland hotel. There is color in every room and you can't beat the view, or the...

We started our 12 day round the island trip with 3 nights at this perfect little retreat. We were warmly greeted by Gigi and she was nearly always available to give us good advice and recommendations for things to do. She really makes this place extra special! The Seaside room was lovely and well appointed, great bed and ocean breezes,...

We spent 4 nights at the BIR in the Oceanview room. It was perfect. Lovely room with view and sound of waves. Two floors with a balcony. We had everything we needed. Gigi gave us great ideas. They provide beach towels and coolers, chairs and everything you need for the beach. The outdoor kitchen is grand although we didn't use...

We stayed here for 3-4 nights. The retreat is just off a main road. It is across from the best snorkeling!! They have gear available at the retreat for free. This place is a gem. You can hear the waves from your room. So peaceful. Our room was small, but beautifully appointed! It had a lanai that was lovely for...

It's not too big, it's not too small, it's just right! Walking distance to Kahalu'u State Beach for some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island! Gigi welcomes you, makes sure you have everything you need and answers all of your questions! The outdoor kitchen is wonderful and a great place to gather any time of day! Short drive...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a beautifully maintained and landscaped property with five bright, well-appointed, clean guestrooms. We are just steps from Kahaluu Bay, which offers excellent snorkeling and surfing, but tucked back off the main road so the atmosphere is tropical seclusion. Each guestroom has its own private lanai, bathroom with tub-shower combo, refrigerator, convection oven, electric hot water kettle and coffeemaker. Additionally, we provide the following complementary amenities: use of beach equipment, garden sitting room with library and games, and gazebo with gas BBQ. ... more   less
