After not taking a vacation for several years due to COVID, I decided to splurge for my 40th birthday trip, and let me tell you, it was beyond amazing. My husband and I kept saying we felt like imposters because it was too incredible. When you pull up to the valet they are already addressing you with your last name. You are then escorted to your check-in couch, where you get your lei, drink your mai tai and hear about the property and your room location. We were super excited to receive an upgrade, I think for my birthday. After the run down and answering any questions you may have, you get a golf cart tour to the room where they go over everything in the room. The best part is the room iPad where you can order room service or request pretty much anything when you need it. You can get a mattress pad, different pillows, a sleep mask, a pen, nail file, basically anything (pen and nail file were not listed but was still easily able to get it, lol). Im really considering buying their pillow from the four seasons home line. Also the room is just the perfect combination of modern and Hawaiian. I think only having two story buildings also really positively affects the feeling on the property. I loved all the different pools. There is a pool for every preference and chairs were zero issue to obtain. They come out to you and set you up with your towels, umbrella and waters until you are ready to order whatever you want. Let me tell you, the pools are where it’s at. You sit there long enough and you’ll get a cooling spray with Evian water, clean your sunglasses, macadamia nuts, fresh fruit of the day, and a fresh fruit popsicles. It was fun to see what goodies were going to come around that day. We had massages scheduled on our last day but I enjoyed lounging by the pools so much, I cancelled them. My favorite restaurant on site was the residence beach house. It was soooo good and charmingly decorated. Breakfast at ulu was good. I’ve heard the buffet isn’t what it used to be but I still thought it was really good with plenty of variety. Beach tree lunch was also yummy. Dinner at ulu was good but not great for me. However, the soufflé was off the wall. We also just loved walking around the property. The on site cultural center is a beautiful and interesting stop to look around. We also saw a couple sea turtles sunning themselves on the beach. Kings pond is so fun to observe often. The huge puffer and eagle ray were my faves. The grounds are so tropical and beautiful. As you walk around, all the workers are so nice and friendly. Also, I forgot to mention the pool staff was my fave. They always came across the friendliest and helpful to me. I could keep going with accolades of this hotel. It was so difficult to leave. Probably won’t be coming back until a next big life milestone but I’m looking forward to it!!!!

Hotel's Favourite
Four Seasons Hualalai is one of the best resorts we've ever encountered. Everything is at the top level, from the welcome with leis and drinks to the departure with the friendly and helpful desk staff. We stayed in an ocean view room (king plus pull-out for our child) with the lava rock shower, which I can't recommend enough. We were offered an upgrade to a second-floor room but turned it down since we wanted that outdoor shower - this was the right choice! Our room faced the beach and we could easily hear the sound of the waves from our lanai. Being on the first floor also meant having direct access to the lawn/gardens and we were just steps from the quiet pool. What a beautiful setting! The landscaping and architecture make your room feel isolated even with people right next door, and the low buildings make the entire resort feel intimate in a way that a high-rise never could. Every interaction we had with staff was welcoming, thoughtful, and attentive. We especially loved how the staff would come by our beach chairs throughout the day to refill our ice waters and offer little complimentary refreshments such as popsicles, fruit, and frozen grapes. They would even clean your sunglasses for you! One of our favorite features of this resort is the beach in front of the Seashell (family) pool. There is a lava rock barrier which creates a safe place to swim and snorkel and buffers the area from large waves. It's still fun for older kids and adults as you can get some good waves in high tide, and there is sea life (a very charming sea turtle swam around for most of our visit) but you don't worry as much about predators or jellyfish as I would in the open ocean. The water is very warm and in the morning is still and smooth. I do recommend bringing water shoes because there are sea urchins among the rocks even in that area and we did see one person step on one (easily remedied by staff who have a kit to neutralize the stingers - but still unpleasant). Every meal we had was terrific - the prices are frankly astonishingly high so be prepared, but again the service and the quality were top notch. We ate at Ulu, Beach Tree, and Hualalai Grille and each one was unique and delicious with plenty of choices for both food and beverages. We also liked the Surf Shack by the beach for easy (and reasonably priced!) lunches. The breakfast buffet at Ulu is not to be missed!

Review of four seasons Hualalai. Check in: Stayed in Nov 22 for 6 nights. Check in was early due to booking with Amex but only 1 room was ready by 12. The other room was ready by 3 which was totally ok since we just got ready in the one room. We had asked for connecting rooms and at check in they said they could not offer that, it would be side by side. Come to find out when we got into the second room it was indeed a connecting (adjoining room). Check in was brief. They have a ton of staff with golf carts just sitting around. At a 5-star resort I would assume they would have golfed us around to get us familiar. Leis and drinks given on check in but for us (but the kids (12 and 13) just got there cheap shell necklaces that I saw in ABC store for 1.75.) I would have thought my 12-year-old daughter would have gotten a real flower lei as this is a 5 star resort. Thoughout the stay however if you asked anyone to take you somewhere within the resort via golf cart they were extremely happy to do so. Rooms: 2 golf view rooms. Both spacious. One was king and adjoining was 2 Queens. Both first floor with outside showers. The shower entrance to the outside shower is through the real shower. Not really helpful when you have brother and sister or any siblings sharing a room. Both cannot shower at the same time because there are no curtains or shades and its again the same entrance. Not a good floor plan. The toilet did have their own door but again the shower is see through so you can’t be in the bathroom at all when someone is in there. NO BIDET, terrible for a 5 star resort and toilet paper was more like paper towels. The bed and ac was super comfortable though. And the room was large for 2 people. Pillows/sheets were comfortable. First floor opens up to the golf course. Outside there is a table and couch sectional. Very nice to sit in the morning and was not bothered by golf cart noise or golfer’s noise. The one good point of a golf view room is you have private parking right outside you place. Its super convenient not to have to go to the lobby every time you need your car. We are out a lot so this saved us tons of time. Its the cheapest room too. The laundry room is located right next door, you do need to go outside the building for it but I never had to wait. It was always available (1 w/d). They had detergent and dryer sheets there but they had run out for 2 days with no refill. It was ok for me because I saw that it was low and took 2 extra for my next 2 washes. By then I thought that it would be re filled but it was not. I had to tell someone. I also had to tell someone that their were small bugs all over the floor in there and trash that was overflowing.( like sand fleas) This trash in there was full every day on several times I when in there. Not a good look for a 5 star. But maid service in the actual rooms were outstanding. They cleaned the room like 4 times throughout the day. Very good service and would give you extra towels, refill coffee pods (expresso machine in room) creamers etc. That really made this a 5- star where the other things were very much lacking. Restaurants: Ulu was for Breakfast. Breakfast buffet included with Amex travel booking. Its 85 per room but they don’t tell you that, I had to find it out. Kids under 13 are cheaper but they continued to charge for adult until I mentioned it twice. Plus, when I got the bill the day before we left, they did not even credit the B for the Amex credit. I had to bring it to their attention that they missed every day’s credit. They were happy to fix it but the problem should not have happened to begin with. Breakfast was good but it did not change the whole stay maybe only 2-3 small options changed. So by day 3 you are sick of that food. For a 5 star hotel bigger things should be changing daily. Acai bowl for al a cart was 28.00! Stupid prices and not even a big portion, all granola and barely any fruit or acai. I expect high prices but I expect good and well portion food. No lines at B and was not that crowded yet service was always so slow. Dinner: did not go to Hualali grill and did not eat by the pool so I can’t rate that. Ulu Lunch and Dinner- just ok. Nothing to rave about, prices of course so high but the dinner and lunch was just blah. I would never go back. Sushi there just ok. I have had better. Everything was good I just expected to be really really wowed and was not for the price of it. We only went once to L and once to D. Beach tree- more reasonable, pizza was good, pasta was good. Everything very good and of course sitting by the ocean was very nice too. Limited menu options but food was good. We only went once. General store – closes at 6:30 but they sell ice cream, shakes and snacks and medicine. It would have been nice it if was open later. We went once for ice cream and a shake. Very good. No stores or other restaurants close so you are driving about 25 minutes for something else so if you need medicine after 6:30 forget it. Ocean: there is a lot of rocky areas along this beach but there is a spot that is blocked off to snorkel. We did see lots of fish, others saw a turtle. It is blocked off by rocks so it is more calm here but still can get very rough at certain time of the day. We did see the ocean come all the way to the beach path several times throughout the stay leaving sand all in the pathways. At several times during the stay I did not see anyone clean this path up as when I walked on it again it was still covered by sand. I see other reviews with stellar service and calling them by name which did not occur really for us. Again, we did not use valet service or pool service so perhaps that is why no one got to know us. pool: only pool we visited was Kings pond where you can snorkle with the fish and eagle ray. Very impressive. Its so nice esp if you have kids learning to snorkle. They have a float you can use to see through to snorkle /snorkle gear/life jackets /sunscreen all for guest usage. They do put chair covers down for you in your area and they have service for water. I did not experience anyone offering snacks. Kings pond is a great area so that alone may make your decision to stay here if you are one of those people who hang out at the resort. IF you are , I think this is a wonderful place for you to stay with small children. But then you are limited with these food choices which will get very old quickly as nothing is close to here. All said it was my first experience at a four seasons hotel and It was a pretty big deal as were were celebrating an anniversary. I feel like it was just a so so experience. If we come back to Big Island I think we will stay elsewhere. It does not feel worth the cost. I do like the fact its very private 2 floor resort. It's very private but missing the wow factor of good food and the wow factor for service just was not there for me. I kind of got that feeling through emails before hand as the concierge was so slow to get back to me on several excursions I inquired about. The thing is other hotels aren't really any cheaper further up but maybe the food would be better... if you have kids. I don't think you will be disappointed if you stay here but maybe just a little underwhelmed depending of what you are used to. Oh I forgot to add. If you are at Kings pond go right on the beach, you will run into a weird statue and a salt and pepper black sand beach that is abandoned. Lots of shells and rocks to see. Seems like an old hotel there and now is getting worked on. It was fun to explore that area.

EVERYONE was extremey nice, this was a great event/vacation for me and my team. It was nothing that we needed that wasn't supplied. The staff recognized me by name (everyone that I had interactions with) including the bellman at the entrance this made me smile daily ;) A few recognitions from the pick-up at the airport to the team that cleaned my room daily. My room attendant was just that attendant to me and my room doen to the point where she put my earrings together by colors (it was just so nice of her and yes I took a picture)

We stayed at Four Seasons Hualalai for our 10th wedding anniversary and it was absolutely stunning in every way. I have stayed at dozens of Four Seasons properties, as well as all the other luxe brands (Rosewood, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, One&Only, Waldorf Astoria, Fairmont, Auberge, Montage, Peninsula, Mandarin Oriental, Park Hyatt, JW Marriott, etc.), and I am unequivocally certain that the Four Seasons Hualalai is the greatest resort (or hotel) on earth. The Four Seasons Maui, which I have stayed at multiple times, is my 2nd favorite on earth, and I will compare and contrast the two properties below, since I know many travelers are choosing between them. SUMMARY: Four Seasons Hualalai is superlative in every aspect. Book it. STAFF: The heart and soul of the resort is its INCREDIBLE staff. The staff all go above and beyond to make your stay genuine and memorable. We encountered about 1,000 staff members during our 8-night stay here and each and every one of them ROCKED. For example, I accidentally left a brand-new pair of $400 sunglasses at my dinner table one night and when I woke up the next morning, the staff had turned them in with a special note bearing my name. Although each and every staff member ROCKED, I'd like to give special shout-outs/kudos to just a FEW of my all-time favorites: Michael with in-room dining, Grant at the Palm Grove Pool swim-up bar, Joel with the golf cart transport team, Bailey, Elijah, Emilen, Zenia, Sadie, Tharin [and so many more] at the pools, Christian at the Beach Tree restaurant, Nick at the Beach Tree Bar, the list goes on and on. One thing is clear: Under the leadership of GM Charlie Parker, this resort, and its staff, absolutely shine. Mahalo for allowing us to be your guests. SETTING: The physical setting is incredibly unique and beautiful -- it is as though this property was given miles and miles of oceanfront while all the other properties in Hawaii (including other Four Seasons, Ritz, Montage, Fairmont, etc.) were only given small slices of oceanfront. The result is that every pool (yes, all 7 of them) and every room not only has a stunning view of the ocean, but is also immersed in the greatest white noise nature can offer -- the sound of crashing waves. And the same is true of the restaurants and bars -- from Ulu to Beach Tree to Palm Grove to Resident's Beach House, each restaurant is so close to the pounding surf that you feel intimately connected to the stunning power and wild force of the Pacific Ocean. Truly one-of-a-kind and truly spectacular. ROOM: We were a family of 5 (our kids are 6, 4, and almost 1), and had plenty of room in our ocean view king room which was on the ground floor of the Seashell crescent. Because it was on the ground floor, it had a really awesome lava-rock-enclosed outdoor shower as well as a massive lanai with direct "ski-in/ski-out" access to Seashell Pool. This was very handy with kids/babies napping. Our sons shared the full-sized pull out sofa, our almost-1-year-old had a nice wooden crib, and we enjoyed the most comfortable king bed on earth. The room was recently renovated with a huge flatscreen TV, Nespresso, large walk-in closet, large bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, separate soaking tub, separate WC room, and double-vanity. Our kids slept very well the whole time which made us happy parents. GROUNDS: Absolutely stunning. You will never find one leaf in the wrong place or one blade of grass that should not be where it is. This place is manicured to the highest of standards and has absolutely stunning grounds with gorgeous trees and plants everywhere and the song of tropical birds to remind you that you have found paradise. FACILITIES: I am putting a note in here about facilities only to mention that the resort has complimentary laundry facilities sprinkled throughout the clusters of rooms, including complimentary detergent and dryer sheets. If you're traveling with kids, this is absolutely CLUTCH, and even if you're traveling as a couple or on business, it is still amazing, as you can get away with packing super light. DINING: Excellent bars and restaurants throughout. Our favorite was the Resident's Beach House, but we also absolutely loved our dinners at Hualalai Grille and Beach Tree, as well as our breakfasts at Ulu. Each restaurant is unique and I would (strongly) recommend trying them all. If you're with young kids, book 5:30 dinner at Beach Tree to enjoy the torch-lighting ceremony followed by live music with kids frolicking on the lawn. Another awesome perk is the Hualalai Trading Post, which is a small grocery store / cafe by the Spa and Tennis facilities. SPA: The Spa here is absolutely superb. I got an 80-minute Swedish deep tissue massage and it was the best massage of my life. Everything is outdoors, including your massage hale (hut), and the spa is fully stocked with lockers, steam showers, cold and hot plunge pools, sauna, and everything else your heart could desire. Even if you do not come for a treatment, I would highly recommend checking out the spa as it is truly stunning. POOLS: The pools here are absolutely stunning. From south to north, they are Palm Grove (adults-only with swim-up bar, hot tub, good vibes, and incredibly inventive cocktails served by friendly mixologists); Beach Tree ("quiet pool" which makes it functionally adult-only, though we were able to sneak our kids into cabanas here a few times), Seashell (family/kids pool with a large pool and a smaller keiki pool), and King's Pond (family/kids pool with a striking new infinity pool plus the famous King's Pond in which to snorkel/view marine life). One of my favorite spots was facing the crashing waves in the Beach Tree hot tub in the late afternoon -- you are literally a stone's throw from the waves and because the pool is quiet, can hear nothing but the waves crashing violently ashore -- it is truly spectacular. I could go on and on about how great the pools here are but you get the gist of it -- there's a scene for everybody, and the staff at the pools are incredible and pamper you all day with food, drinks, and complimentary frozen treats/Evian mist/sunglasses cleaning. PRO TIPS: Study the 5 different crescents in advance and ask for the one the fits you best. In a nutshell: --With kids: Seashell --Honeymoon: Palm Grove or Beach Tree --Golf buddy trip: Ocean Golf crescent --Unique view to suit anyone: King's Pond COMPARISON TO MAUI FOUR SEASONS: The service at the Maui Four Seasons is similarly amazing, and it has great rooms and facilities too. However, there is really no comparison when it comes to physical setting: Hualalai wins by leaps and bounds. It has roughly half the guest rooms of Maui and about 50 times more oceanfront. Hualalai is also architecturally-unique in that the buildings were made to resemble Polynesian dwellings as a nod to its Native Hawaiian heritage on the grounds of Historic Ka'upulehu. Maui is more similar architecturally similar to the Farimont Orchid (Big Island), which is to say that it is a giant u-shaped building with many stories of rooms. Both have incredible staff, dining, and grounds, but Hualalai feels far more connected to the power and beauty of the Pacific Ocean, and feels far more authentic Hawaiian. If you can only choose one of these two spectacular properties, go with Hualalai. POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS: Even at the greatest resort on earth, there are always room for improvements. The following comments are not meant in any way to disparage the resort, but instead are meant simply as ideas to make the best even better: 1. Upgrade families with young kids to suites without trying to charge them (if you have the availability). The resort was far from full during our visit. Unlike the Maui property, which upgraded us from a room to a suite without us even asking, Hualalai only upgraded us from a standard poolside room to an ocean view room (which was very much appreciated, by the way!). I gave them many hints that we were hoping for a suite upgrade, but they fell on deaf ears. I then asked if we could upgrade to a suite, and they said it would cost more. Our "regular" room was so stunning and our kids slept so beautiful that this was not a big deal whatsoever. But when somebody is dropping ~$15k to spend a week at your resort and traveling halfway across the globe with their 6, 4, and 1-year-olds to celebrate their 10th Wedding Anniversary with you, it would have been nice to have been upgraded to a suite (or even villa!) without us even asking. 2. More shade at Seashell Pool and/or make Beach Tree pool more family/kid friendly. Beach Tree pool is blessed with two long rows of cabanas for all-day shade (complimentary, of course, because this is Four Seasons). It would be nice if Seashell also had cabanas and/or if Beach Tree were made more family/kid friendly. There is already an adult-only pool with Palm Grove, plus the Lap Pool at the Spa, so a little more real estate for families with kids would be nice. 3. And I will end with a fun one: FS Maui has a signature scent that you can smell throughout the resort (from the lobby to the breezeways to the complimentary sunscreen at the pools) -- perhaps FS Hualalai could follow suit and do this too? IN SUM: I have stayed at every luxe resort in the Hawaiian islands and at every luxe brand across the world, and Four Seasons Hualalai is simply the best (Four Seasons Maui, although breathtaking, is a somewhat distant 2nd). Do yourself a favor and book FS Hualalai. You will not regret it.

This hotel is one of my favorite hotels on the Big Island. You will love all the staff and the welcoming aloha spirit. They have beautiful grounds with plenty of walking trails for a nice run or leisurely walks. The restaurants are located throughout the property and the pools are all beautiful The only problem will be you will not want to leave. I am already planning another trip to visit this amazing property. Have the concierge order a van to pick you up at the airport and your visit will be seamless and you will arrive at the hotel quickly once you land. No waiting for Uber or Lyft. They also have Kama'aina rates so check that out too if you are a local. Pools are my favorite along with the Ula Grille.

This was our first time coming to this resort. We have been to the Four Seasons Maui many times and consider that property a 10. After spending 5 days, this property is an 11. Everything from the rooms, grounds, food and service were spectacular. We are already discussing our next trip back.

Imagine a place where everything exactly matches all that has been marketed to you about Hawaii. An experience so incalculably good that you forget about how much staying there costs. Nothing is gauche. Everything feels like it belongs right there. You feel like you’re at one with nature. But it’s nature that has had all its jagged edges rounded. It’s a place where you see spinner dolphins playing only a few hundred yards away as you eat breakfast. And also a place where the restaurant hostess magically produces a pair of binoculars to watch them with 5 seconds after you ask for it. A physical experience so good that it actually disappears into the background allowing you to focus completely on your loved ones and nature.

We were blown away by the beauty and views at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai! The friendliness and service by the staff members was impeccable and one of our favorite memories of staying here. We also loved the multiple pools, hot tubs, and kings pond for snorkeling. There wasn't a single place we visited at the resort that ever felt busy or crowded. Our suite was spacious and tastefully decorated. We loved the daily housekeeping service and would love to return for a future trip!

Went to Kona for short getaway from our home in Pahoa. The Four Seasons was the only choice. Outstanding facility with great staff. The Hualalai Grill was absolutely amazing. If you end up in Kona stay at the Four Seasons.
