We went here on our honeymoon and we’re sorely disappointed, the ocean view room that we were originally put in provided a better view of a wall than the ocean. The “queen size” beds were only full size. There was no room service, the internet was out most of the trip, and the spa was closed. The location was barely a hotel, and definitely not a worthwhile resort.

When you arrive at the resort the open air lobby is inviting. While walking around the property you will find lush grounds and nice walking paths with breathtaking views. The restaurant area and two pools were clean and staffed by friendly workers. Unfortunately they are understaffed so Hawaiian patience is required. With an ocean view room, the room size and balcony were amazingly large. The furniture and bathroom were a bit outdated but still clean. One comment on room cleaning is this….They should know your group schedule (we were with a traveling group) so they can clean room with no one there. We had a few hiccups with this. Lastly I was able to get into the spa and enjoyed my massage.

I had very high hopes based on the beautiful entrance area but overall it sadly underwhelmed. Most of the staff members were friendly and kind but lines at the front desk were always long. Check in took 30 minutes. Forget trying to get a hold of them from your room. In 6 nights I tried calling 3 different times but all 3 times no one ever answered. The 3rd call I was asking to pay for another night since we changed our flight to a redeye. No answer so we just checked out. The operator told me if they're busy, they won't answer so you need to go down. Not really acceptable for this type of "resort". The room was slightly dated but we have no complaints since it was clean. Housekeeping was thorough and the layout of the property was nice. The pool is a beautiful area with a great view however the it doesn't have any showers. This leads me to my final disappointment which is that they have no accomodations for you if you have a late flight after checkout. No showers so unless you add a night (including paying the resort fee), you're on your own. The operator literally said "we don't offer anything for you". Parking was an absolute rip off at $35 a night so we did the street parking. The daily resort fee made this less of a bargain as well. Overall the Outrigger is a nice place but very underwhelming for the price you pay.

Aloha Stephdyuan, Thank you for sharing your recent experience at the the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa. It is our pleasure to hear that you appreciated the service form our Housekeeping Team. The long wait at check-in and the lack of warmth and welcome from our Front Desk team is not a norm at the resort. We will use your feedback as a coaching lesson and make sure that we address the behavior of the specific hosts. We do hope you give us another chance to welcome you back with a much better experience in the future. Mahalo Nui Loa!

BEWARE!!! This was not a good experience. Booked this birthday/holiday week six months in advance. Booked through my travel members site at USAA. Paid at the time June 2021! Upon arrival the Sheraton resort had been bought out by Outrigger (horrible name). Upon check in they had me down as ‘2’ reservations and tried to charge me for the stay, luckily I had my paper receipt. Had also paid for ‘4’ events through the concierge/activities representative on site. First, the resort is Very old and in need of update. The toilets were from 1972 I’m sure. Only 1 of the 2 elevators work all around the resort (on the 6th floor). We had to request face towels every day, because housekeeping kept forgetting to leave clean ones. There was only “1” restaurant open/available to dine, the main restaurant had been closed for “2” yrs per staff, due to Covid. Would have been nice to know when I called to check on all this in October. Then we find out the shuttle service has been shut down (since August) for not having drivers. We were stranded. In order to participate in the activities (that were off the property) we had to figure out transportation causing us to cancel “2” of the “4” events planned. The major event I had planned for my birthday was the helicopter tour, didn’t happen, and didn’t find out about the transportation issue until “2” hrs before scheduled event. Very disappointing/stressful. The worse situation was the Only restaurant was Not able to accommodate the New Year’s eve dinner for everyone. Unable to get a reservation, forced to get food from the only gift shop/market on the property. Not the way I had planned to spend New Years’ eve! Finally, “2” days after leaving the island, received a call from the resort in reference to my bill not being paid for the stay!!! I had to come home, make calls, emails receipts to prove payment. No problem, I will Never return to this resort nor Kona for that matter. This was by far the Worse experience I have had since traveling consistently for the last 10 years. Oh, still waiting on refunds from the activities that had to be paid in advance yet did not happen.

I booked when it was still a Sheraton, so the change didn’t help. It has a privileged location right on the ocean front, but I don’t think anyone would disagree that it needs some TLC. One of the elevators didn’t work the whole time we were there and the other didn’t like to go to our floor all the time. The bathroom had an old humid smell, even when we asked for it to be thoroughly cleaned. We arrived at 9pm to be told one of our rooms was still not ready and we couldn’t get into it until about 10.30pm. The self parking was 25 dollars a night, which given the location and lack of other hotels/ restaurants nearby didn’t seem to be necessary, as we had already paid a resort fee. All in all, we will be trying a different hotel the next time we come to the Big Island.
