What a WONDERFUL experience! The place is tucked far back at the end of a long road, so you definitely feel removed from all outside distractions. The grounds are beautifully planted and lovingly maintained, truly a Garden of Eden setting. All staff were very pleasant. I made a mistake on our 3rd day (the day we needed to check out) and thought that we were staying 1 more night. We headed out early to Volcanoes National park, only to receive a call from Rae reminding us that we were due to check out by 10:00 am. We were hours away! YIKES! Rae was very gracious and had the housekeeper pack our stuff ( she did a lovely job!) so the room could be cleaned for the client coming in that night. Our only disappointment was that we were away from the Sanctuary most of the time, sightseeing, just coming "home" to go to bed. I would love to go back when I had more time to fully explore the gardens and just enjoy the peace and quiet that this lovely place has to offer. I really liked the Banyan Tree Sanctuary and will book them on future trips. …

While planning our vacation to Hawaii, my husband expressed his one and only desire and that was to stay here as they had everything he wanted -- the Buddha, veganism, clothing optional (only at night) and relaxation. We were only able to stay here for one night, but our time here was nice. This hotel is tucked away in the jungle with a view of the ocean in the distance. They have a community kitchen where you are able to try fresh fruits from their trees and macadamia nuts. They also request that you only cook vegan meals in the kitchen. They also have a salt water pool, sauna and hot tub available. We had them entirely to ourselves. A TV was not in the room, but was available in a building called the meditation room. A few negatives were there was a lot of bugs in the room, but they do seem to believe all life is sacred, so perhaps they don't spray? We also took a walk around the hotel and were not sure where the property ended and whether we were invading someone's private property. Domesticated cats roam the property as well, but are not allowed in the rooms. …

We stayed for one night, catching an early morning flight - so we were literally in & out, but what a shame. This place was pretty funky! And the hot tub, got nice and hot (the pool was cold enough that you could dip in between them - also there were fresh macadamia nuts that you could crack open yourself & the private balcony on our suite look out over Kona & it was all pretty special!

This place is now a combination of long term residents and a few pay by the night rooms. It made for a terrible sleep experience as the third floor tenant leads a night life in a place that advertises quiet from 9PM-9AM. I paid $240 a night to have the most interrupted sleep of the last 5 years of my life living in the middle of a city and travelling the US staying in city hotels. Managements solutions were nothing of the sort.

The place itself is nice. Our room was large with a lanai overlooking the property. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small but fine. The kitchen dining area was nice. We followed the vegetarian/vegan request of the owners although we are not. We brought food from a Thai place in town that was vegetarian and heated it up in the microwave. One morning we had smoothies someone made, $10 each. The reason for two stars is that over two nights we never met any of our hosts. I saw one man showing other guests around the property. There is a tour you can pay for I guess. It was just weird in such a small place that no one said hello, greeted us, or acknowledged our presence. As were we’re leaving the guy who did the tour said good-bye. Ok. About 15 min later we received a text saying perhaps we had forgotten to pay for the smoothies. Nope. We left $20 on the desk. He said it wasn’t there. He was in the room right after we left. (So you did see us and decided not to say anything?) Maybe it blew on the floor when I opened the door? A bit later another text. The tour guide guy had taken the money thinking it was for him. Maybe don’t accuse us of theft until you’ve talked to your partners. Shaking my head. For a supposed Zen, mellow, peaceful place it was none of those.…

What a special place. I can’t say enough good things about the location, surroundings, amenities, and the people. It was so fun getting to meet other like-minded guests and some of the residents. The property is stunning- enjoyed the hot tub/pool before bed and waking up to the sound of birds. A lush oasis on the hills above Kona. I’m so grateful to have found this quiet, rejuvenating retreat.

Everyone was very nice and kind. Enjoyed hanging out and singing under the sky. I slept like a baby for the first time in years and could breathe! The air is so clean and fresh with the daily rain that comes in around 3-4 pm daily. It rains on and off but it’s so cool. And the sanctuary is beautiful and peaceful it’s amazing what they have there and I am not vegan but I respected that they were and ate whatever they shared with me. The ice cream beans are a trip. Giant pods with beans you don’t eat. You eat the covering instead and they kinda do taste like ice cream. I welcome the chance to go back and see my new friends again one day. It and they were lovely. Thank you Rae and Ben, cheyanne...Phil and Rae for the music. It was a blast!

We stayed here for 3 nights in Dragon's Neat (the private bedroom with bathroom ensuite). It was very comfortable with a great view of the ocean and the sanctuary. They have a shared kitchen which is spotlessly clean and clearly labeled for easy access. All one has to do is clean, after use, which is true for Airbnb too. Rae, Benjamin and Maggie are very pleasant hosts. Before confirming our booking, they explained to us what a stay in Banyan Sanctuary means and if that is something we don't agree to, they would cancel the reservation free of charge - this is something both my husband and I really appreciated. A business with so much transparency is pretty rare to find :) They have quiet hours from 9pm to 8 am but it wasn't really difficult to respect that. Kitchen is accessible at all times as long as you respect those hours. They also have a spa and pool - the spa is accessible until 12 am. Also, staying vegan while cooking/eating in the kitchen was a welcoming change from routine. I definitely recommend a stay here when you're in Kona. …

I was happy to discover this accommodation was in fact not to far from Kona Kailua airport or difficult to locate. The room I had (fig heaven) was no in the main complex and was situated as a cabin out doors. The washroom was also a short walk outdoors, at times difficult in the dark of night, but worth it for the stunning starry views. The cabin was modest and clean and felt different from a hotel room, owing mainly to the fact of its location as a cabin situated outside. I was also happy to discover that there was produce available for all of the guests to partake, grown directly on the property with care. This was definitely a highlight of the Banyan Tree Sanctuary. The other thing to note is the shared kitchen space, which on the whole was good for those wanting to do their owning cooking or preparations on the property. One drawback of the shared kitchen was the general cleanliness; while guests were asked to clean up after themselves after cooking, and dishes were always done by someone, leaving the space free to use, there were spaces in this kitchen (i.e. tea towels, certain corners) that were in need of proper grime removal. I would be aware of this for those guests who have extremely high cleanliness standards; since this accommodation also has a tree fruit farm/garden, this may be in part a reason for the nature-focused, and non-clinical approach. It should also be noted this accommodation is also a family home. Therefore guests are made to feel welcome to an extent, but beyond that, also may risk feeling they are invading the 'family space' of those who reside at the property. In all, I would not return to stay here again were I to visit Kona, however, I would highly recommend this location for younger travelers (20 somethings), couples looking for a cheaper getaway/retreat, or older travellers who are low-maintenance with fewer accommodation standards. That said, the bathrooms were cleaned properly every day, and the serenity offered by the property on the whole was a nice change of pace from your typical hotel scenario.…

Mahalo for your review, Naomi, I'm a little surprised you only gave us 3 stars, because your written review sounded like 4 stars at least! ;-) Yes, having an outdoor kitchen can be a little tough to keep to 'clinical' standards! :-D Thanks for recommending our space to others, we realize that we're not for everyone, but many people really love to come here and return year after year. I hope you find that perfect mix of all the things you love for your next visit to Kona. Mahalo.

This is an amazing place. Stayed at their Dragon's nest with private full bath. If you are looking for the convenience and regular amenities of a hotel, this is not a place for you. But, if want to take a deep breathe and suck it all in - the bountiful nature, the fresh air, the fragrance of the flowers and the fresh fruit, this is THE place! Rarely during a vacation, I experienced such peace and tranquility! The owner Rae is awesome, too...he was very helpful in recommending nearby activities and provided an educative tour of their fruit garden. A staff, Nora, too was wonderful. Overall, I would highly recommend this place if you want to experience a different lifestyle for a few days!
