There is one and only one reason to stay at this dump: it is a gateway to the southern Highlands areas such as Landmannalaugar and it is a near monopoly. Hrauneyjar and its sister Hótel Highland are both owned by the the same guy (who also happens to own the pretentious Hótel Rangá in Hella). I have stayed here before... More

We did not stay here, so this is a review solely of their bar and public rooms. A stunningly beautiful drive from the South Coast near Hella takes you past snow clad mountains, hydroelectric plants and endless highland vista. The paved road ends here! We were there late September, and the Guest House was about to close for the winter,... More

I spent two nights at this guesthouse in the highlands of Iceland. Simple but clean and comfortable. Room very small with private bath but I didn't come to Iceland to spend time in a hotel room. It had all I needed for a comfortable nights rest including a bathrobe on the bed and slippers. You are required to remove your... More

We chose to stay here to visit Landmannalaugar which is only accessible on F-roads. From here we caught a bus to Landmannalaugar for a fantastic day hike. Our room had an opaque wall between the bedroom and bathroom which felt awkward in a twin room. A robe and slippers were provided for the sauna - it takes a while to... More

I don't know why I did not know anything about this guesthouse before, as I am traveling a lot in Iceland. Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to spend my night here at this guesthouse. And I must say the rooms are amazing, modern, new toilets and showers, comfortable beds actually everything of a hotel level. The staff is friendly... More

This was my accommodation for day 5 of my tour to the wilderness. My room was with own bathroom and it was excellent.Bathrobe and slippers supplied but no tea making facilities in room. Toiletries supplied but no tissues. You can only be in the shower for 10 mins then the water goes cold and it takes 20 mins for more... More

This company owns the only 2 hotel properties near Landmannalaugar (the other being Hotel Highland half a mile away). The rooms were quite comfortable (the only queen size bed I got on our 16 day driving trip). The shower area was spacious compared to the tiny enclosed showers found at most hotels (good luck if you drop the soap in... More

This is a good spot if you're planning on a day trip Landmannalaugar. The rooms were basic, but fine. There's a restaurant and snack bar, but no kitchen for cooking your own food. The drive from Gullfoss was spectacular, except for the last few miles which were desolate and pretty uninteresting. Be sure to ask directions, if you're driving into... More

The room is 7 square meters, and it's even dirty. There' no place for a luggage. Only 1 awful bathroom to share with 20 rooms. No kitchen available for guest. Staff quite unkind. No good balance between quality and price. Prices are for hotel but you get a very bad hostel. Better to stay in a camping.

Never made it there. "Hella" was in the address but it was a terrifying 1 1/2 hours away on an unpaved road with no one around. We had to turn around and find somewhere else to stay. That was not easy because August is a very busy time for tourists. The advertisement for this place was very deceiving.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Hrauneyjar Highland Center (Halendismidstodin Hrauneyjum) is situated at the edge of the country’s most impressive and active volcanic area. It is the last stop before entering the vast and untouched interior of Iceland. Hrauneyjar is close to many of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in the highlands - including Landmannalaugar, Pjorsardalur, Mount Hekla, Sprengisandur, Veidivotn and Fjallabak. The vastness and lack of human impact on the surrounding area makes it truly one of the last places in Europe where freedom, natural beauty and solitude are combined in a breathtakingly powerful experience. Hrauneyjar Guesthouse offers 54 CAT I rooms with shared facilities (19 double and 35 twin), 20 CAT II double rooms with bathroom. L-House with 14 twin rooms with shared facilities. In addition Hrauneyjar offers a restaurant, sauna and petrol station. The hotel is well accessible by paved road all year round and is only 150 km from Reykjavik. We recommend guests that are planning on staying with us during Winter season to have a 4WD. ... more   less
