The Porto Azzurro is a family-run Aparthotel located in a quiet area known as Xemxija in St.Paul's Bay. We are complimented with views of the Maltese countryside. The apartments and hotel rooms are comfortable and provide a luxurious base for a truly relaxing holiday. The main towns nearby are Mellieha, St Pauls Bay and the tourist resort of Bugibba. The sandy beaches of Golden Sands and Mellieha Bay are less than 3 kilometres away. All the apartments have a bathroom or shower en suite, air conditioning, fully equipped kitchenette complete with a microwave oven, television, safety deposit box and direct dial telephone. Away from busy streets, our hotel is 15 minutes by bus to Mellieha and the tourist resort of Bugibba (Bus stop Circa 75 metres). The hotel is within walking distance to other restaurants and the seaside promenade overlooking the bay.

This review is for a standard room for two people not the apartments with the kitchens that are also available here. It is a fairly thorough review that I hope is helpful for both potential guests and the managing staff there.

Though quickly resolved, it was bit of a rough start after a long day traveling being allocated a room that was not cleaned after the previous guests. Having said that they were very apologetic and quickly given a new room.

As loads of other reviews say, yes the rooms are a touch dated. They are clean and generously sized. There are areas where they have been refurbished (as cleverly taken pics show on their website) but definitely needs a bit of a cash flow to finish the rest of the room. Bathroom was clean and clearly just updated but the old tired door and trim was put back which just doesn't quite work. Similar to the furniture, bed etc just needs updating to this century to earn the 3 stars. Aircon worked fine but again old, loud and a bit temperamental when it decided to come on. Also the fire alarm/heat detector, as we discovered on our first night, had an incredibly bright flashing light that was only noticeable in the pitch black. Not a major thing unless you're a light sleeper but we've stayed in plenty of hotels which also had fire safety and none of them had a night time flashing disco in the room. For those who care about WiFi, it was available but just outside our room and across the corridor under the router or in the lobby areas. For some reason inside the room it was like a lead cover blocking any signal. Didn't matter much but worth mentioning if you had a small data allowance.

A strange thing we had was needing to hand in the key every time we left the hotel. On the one hand you don't need to worry about it when you're out but on the other hand we weren't exactly comfortable leaving our stuff out in the rooms knowing they could go in (and we don't think we could find a safe or anything). We can appreciate that cleaning staff could go in regardless but we felt that it still created a lack of privacy. On that particular note, we discovered that the rooms were cleaned practically every day which sounds good but really it felt a bit unnecessary seeing as we were there for only a week and again a bit invasive - had to ask for a 'do not disturb sign' for when we left for the day in the hopes to prevent anyone going into the room but was asked to remove it at one point.

Apart from that, staff were friendly and helpful. Didn't use the pool facilities (prefer the beach). We also didn't have breakfast booked or anything so can't comment on that. Instead we went down the hill to the cafe lounge ( check out my review for there too) which worked well for us. There's also a bus stop at the bottom of the hill which keeps you well connected to travelling around. Also a convenience store next door to the cafe to buy water etc.

We enjoyed our 5 day stay at the Porto Azzurro apartment. Check in was fast and easy, and they were very polite and conscience of all COVID procedures. You will have to pay a 5 Euro deposit for use of a pool towel, in addition of .50 Euro daily rental charge. There is also a deposit for the TV remote, which we found strange. Our apartment was on the top floor with a HUGE balcony overlooking the pool area below. Although the room was a little dated, it had everything we needed - firm comfortable mattress, dark blinds, spacious room with a closet, large bathroom and complete kitchen with pots, pans, dishes and utensils. The only thing missing was dish soap, but we improvised. The pool area can fill up quickly on weekends with locals but there was usually a spot with shade. The pool was cleaned daily and there is a bar on-site. The parking situation had limited stalls, however, we always found a spot by the evening. You may also have to ask for the room to be cleaned. They only asked us once in our 5 days. However, we would recommend staying here if you want a long term base to explore Malta.

Dear Guest, A huge thank you for your positive review. It's s nice to read that you had a good impression on your stay with us at Porto Azzurro Aparthotel. It was a pleasure to have you here. The only reason we require a deposit for the TV remote is due to the number of times these were stolen. We would love to welcome you again as soon as possible, and we are really looking forward to this. Once again, thank you for your loyalty and for recommending our hotel to other travellers. Kind Regards, Alexis Meylaq Sales & Guest Relations Manager Porto Azzurro…Your 3 Star Choice!

I have stayed two nights at Porto azzuro aparthotel St. Paul’s bay Malta
From booking in with a couple of lovely informative ladies with a description of facilities level of room and lift to the floor I was on and how many doors down the corridor I was !
Room is spacious so clean that in bare feet not a speck of dirt on my feet !
Amazing as I hate dirty floors and this floor was very clean through out !
In fact the whole room was sparkly clean towels soft plump and white !
The bathroom was lovely, shower warm and loads of room as normally in hotel showers you end up touching the sides !
My bed was comfortable warm and slept well safe blanket in the wardrobe ( I mention this as I stayed in another hotel in st Julian’s the St George park hotel and that was freezing no air con remote given to me to use it and no spare blanket I froze all night very very cold room ! I have reviewed this too .) a/c ,tv well equipped kitchen small stove ,fridge and microwave .

I had a evening meal in the in-house restaurant Do Brazil it was so nice down there as it is just past the bar ( bar area nice too very nice gentleman behind the bar helped enormously with menus and when how to get it .)
I have posted pictures of hotel and meal I choose chicken skewer fries and a salad that you helped your self to 16 € not bad price for both .
It was so delicious and I have posted pictures.
My breakfast was included in my stay and a choice again cooked breakfast , bread brown and white selection of cold meat and cheese , cereals fruit and yogurt.
Coffee apple or orange juice.
I am sure there was more than that available and enjoyed my cooked breakfast yummy .
I even enjoyed the indoor swimming pool .
I truly would visit again .

I have stayed at the Porto Azzurro many times over the last 20 years.
I was due to holiday there again in October 2020 but the visit had to be cancelled due to the Covid crisis.
I always book directly with them, and contacted Alexis Meylaq (Sales and Direct Relations Manager) to ask if my booking could be rolled over to October 2021.
She couldn’t have been more helpful, and the holiday was rearranged without any fuss.
The location of the Porto Azzurro ideally suits me, and although I hire a car there is a bus stop at the bottom of the road.
The apartment was comfortable and had everything you could need.
The reception staff (Stephanie, Jan and Joanna) were all helpful lovely people and cleaning staff were unobtrusive and pleasant.
The Porto Azzurro is not 5 star, but you don’t pay 5 star prices, and for that reason I give it 5 stars.
A good honest business.
I will be returning in 2022.

The apartments are spacious, well equipped, very clean and comfortable. The pool is fabulous, very clean, big, lots of room and sun beds with umbrellas. There is a bar at the pool with food and drinks. The location is good but it is quiet, not a party area which suited us. It is very well serviced with public transport at bottom of the hill, a short steep walk. There are good restaurants and a sea swimming spot (off a pier) a short walk away. There is a well stocked supermarket around the corner and a good cafe for breakfast. There is also a fruit stall and a small bar with outdoor seating sell’s ice creams, snacks, sandwiches etc. The area is usually lively with locals. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. You can book tours from the hotel. There is a historic walking trail close to the hotel. Price is good value compared to other locations and if you book direct on their website they have an offer if stay more than a week they will arrange free shuttle from/to airport and a harbour cruise. There was no restaurant on site open other than the pool but as it’s apartment with cooking facilities, fridge etc you can do own breakfast and lunch, then go out for dinner. Highly recommend. Do your research on location that suits what you are looking for 1st, this is a less lively location than others. We really enjoyed it.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Highly recommended 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We have been visiting Porto Azzurro since 2014, and it never disappoints.

Value for money, excellent service from the staff, in particular, Alexis Meylaq, who has been so friendly and efficient.

Indoor pool for cooler days. Jacuzzi too. A great outdoor pool for hot summer days, with a view of the bay. Amenities are nearby, and the public transport routes are accessible to the Gozo ferry, Valletta, Bugibba, etc

A quieter location for those whom prefer a quiet holiday, we always book an apartment and they're well equipped with AC, kitchenette, modern furnishings and they are spotless

This was our first visit to Malta and our son's first trip abroad, honestly couldn't have been any better!

Firstly the location is simply stunning, with sea view rooms available, there is a Heritage Trail walk directly behind the hotel, and the road leads straight down to the bus stop. with a café/ restaurant and convenience store next to it.

The staff on reception are just simply lovely! Always on hand to give advice on how to get about and where to visit, and thoroughly spoiled our son with attention. So much so that upon departure or son decided to take some pictures of Jan whom he especially liked.

We were a bit chilly on the first night with it being winter, so asked for extra bedding - not a problem.

The maids did a fabulous job changing the bedding and cleaning on a daily basis.

We had the standard room, which was very spacious with kitchen and even came with a patio, All very clean, and comfortable.

We unfortunately had a problem with a guest in the neighbouring room on the second to last night - no fault to the hotel - when we mentioned it to reception, she very thoughtfully upgraded us for the final night to a one bed apartment with a large balcony and sea views.

The indoor swimming pool was fabulous for us to use each day, this hugely boosted our son's confidence in the water.

The outdoor pool and snack bar was closed for the winter but looks very inviting.

We are already planning our return trip to Porto Azzurro, and certainly recommend to others.

We enjoyed 4 nights here at a bargain price on a room only basis. We were allocated room 608 on the top floor by a very friendly gentleman on reception after midnight. Our room was spacious with a huge balcony, kitchen & bathroom with a shower cubicle. The twin beds were firm & comfortable. We paid the deposit for a TV remote & €2 a day for a safe. There was no hairdryer in the room but a quick trip to reception & I was given one for as long as I wanted. There was no maid service during our visit but we were fine with that. We paid €5 for breakfast & were pleased with the choice. Cooked breakfast if requested but plenty of choice as well. The staff were friendly & polite & always eager to help answer any questions we had. We would definitely stay here again if we visited St Paul’s Bay.

I have stayed at this hotel for the last 3 years as a single traveler the staff Joanne and Steph on reception were always on hand with bus routes and places to visit. I needed a better reading lamp for the bedroom and with an hour Raymond from the maintains staff appeared with said lamp.
Last but not least I have to thank alexis maylag who is the hotel customer relations manager was most helpful from booking my accommodation to making a point to see that I was happy with my accommodation and transport to and from the airport

On the accommodation side room where clean and tidy and sheet and towels changed regularly
There is a bit of an incline from the main road up to the hotel but I managed it ok bus stops are at the bottom on the road and you can get anywhere on the island
Regards
Joy brown
