This is a good hotel don't get me wrong but as a first visit to malta it is a bit secluded. If you know your way round or where you want to be then you can travel around the island very well by public transport. Be aware that a lot of the main attractions are 45 mins min from this hotel by bus.
That said as an inexpensive introduction to Malta this hotel is more than capable of satisfying that challenge. Regarding students etc in peak season it will be the norm for most hotels to be full and therefore not necessarily a peaceful oasis.
We travel to Malta a lot and in the early days tried Selima etc the more busy resorts. Qawra is where we stay every time (not always here to be fair) but it is in our opinion best of both worlds - quiet enough but easy access to everywhere by bus. We know the island well so it helps.

We have stayed in malta every year for the past 25 years pretty much. This is a budget hotel but on saying that there are a lot worse than this that try and promote themselves as 4 star. Listen you get what you pay for. We tend to use this out of season as it is predominantly older end on long stay (Nov to march). September is past the peak so should have quietened down ref the student factor. It is a little further out but walable. If you go into Buggiba from the back of the hotel this is only minutes away and quicker than walking into Qawra. Either use the rear entrance from the games room out the goods door (hotel happy for you to use it) or turn right out the front, walk about 50 yards and there is a cut through that leads to a resedential area and is a quick cut through. If not sure walk as far as the catholic church and use any of the streets off to your left and you will be in Buggiba square in no time.
It always anoys me that people mock the food here. It is plentyful and whilst not "A La Carte" restauraunt style the buffet always has something. Come on what do you want for the price.
You don't need a car these days in Malta as the bus service is cheap and very reliable. We don't hire a car anymore. The hotel runs a schuttle service to Bugibba but make sure you check it out with reception as it isn't always obvious. Regarding a previous comment on towels you can hire pool towels from reception. Name me one hotel that likes guests to take the room towels to the pool!!
This is a good hotel as a base to explore the local area as long as you don't mind 10-15 minutes walk. If you do take a bus it stops outside and is only 2 euros.
There are bigger and better hotels such as seashells Qawra palace etc but these are significantly more expensive and crowded. Take a punt! Take the negative comments with a pinch of salt. The staff will sort you out if you have any problems or concerns. Enjoy Malta it has an awful lot to offer if you just look.
