This hotel is very clean, I am a somewhat boring with cleanliness, and it was very clean, I greatly appreciate it. It is comfortable, the rooms are large and quiet despite being a few meters from the highway. I'd stay here again for sure. Jim the owner is very polite and attentive.

My room was very clean and full of the most modern amenities. I stayed here for one night in May of 2015. This place is very quiet. The manager (Inn Keeper) is very nice and knowledgeable. If you are passing through, the French Restaurant across the street is amazing.

Caretaker Jim was very friendly and hospitable. The scenery of the snow-capped Sierra Mountains was a beautiful and welcome view to open our door to each morning. Manzanar is only about 5 miles south. Highly recommended for everyone visiting Owens Valley.

I have stayed at the Independence in several times and keep returning on my twice yearly visits to the Eastern Sierras. Jim is friendly and sticks to his goal of making sure all of his quests have a great experience. This is not high end luxury but each room has been renovated and nicely furnished and very well maintained. Jim... More

Jim gives each guest personal attention. He will pick you up and take you back to the Kearsarge trailhead for $5 each way. I texted Jim from the pass and a ride was waiting for me when I reached the trailhead. Jim handled my re-supply shipment at no extra cost and I was able to do laundry for $5. Clean... More

We booked direct with Jim, the innkeeper and he was welcoming on arrival and chatted about his experiences on Route 66 when it was still a trunk route. The motel is located on the Main Street so it was very easy to find but the road is not busy (during our visit) so the loudest sound is the air con.... More

Jim the owner is an retired carpet cleaner, and takes great pride in how he's fixed up this old small hotel. Rooms are spotless, view of the Sierras are great, road noise can be a little high. Expecting a cheap continental breakfast, we were surprised with fresh made banana and coffee cake.

Jim was a wonderful host, and his motel a great place to stay. And we stayed rather longer than expected: our rental car broke down and we had to wait several hours for a replacement. Jim helped with a jump start and tinkering with the battery, and was a relaxed, friendly support in time of need!
