Our thatched-roofed cabanas were spacious, beautifully appointed and comfortable, but still in keeping with the jungle surroundings. Tom, the owner, and a biologist started our visit to El Monte with a guided tour of plants, insects and mammals. We then had a candle light dinner in the lodge with delicious, organic food from their garden. The next day we toured...

Simply cannot say enough positive things about El Monte. We live in Cuenca, Ecuador, and planned our visit as an entry to Ecuador for our son, who traveled from Cambodia for his first visit to the country. El Monte provided the perfect entry. From the amazing (and amazingly clean) facilities, to the superb food, to the morning bird watching excursions...

It starts with a cable ride above the rapidly-flowing Mindo River. The owners and hosts, Tom and Mariela, have created a paradise. They took uu on a early morning hike around the 100+ acre property. The spacious open air main lodge with its thatched roof is impressive. So are the grounds, with a large vegetable garden and extensive landscaping. We...

Always our first choice when staying in Mindo. The setting is stunning. The cabins are Mindo 'chic' and so comfortable. Beautifully thought out and sleeping with the sound of the river guarantees a good night's rest. El Monte is close enough to everything you would want to do in Mindo yet remains totally private and tranquil away from the hubbub...

We spent 3 nights at El Monte Lodge in November 2016 and rated it as the best place we have ever stayed at in all our travels which are fairly extensive as a retired couple. Tom and Mariella, our hosts were friendly and helped to create the lovely relaxed atmosphere that seems to draw you in away from the cares...

We spent a wonderful few days in this beautiful place. The accommodation is in wooden buildings with tall thatched roofs and everything is designed to fit into the surrounding forest. The food is delicious and plentiful using lots of fresh ingredients from the kitchen garden. The owners Tom and Mariela, are a warm and generous couple. I would higher recommend...

I've been lucky enough to stay at El Monte twice, in 2014 and 2016. In between visits, I've stayed at several other lodges in Ecuador. El Monte is truly unique. From the moment you cross the Mindo river on the hand pulled cable car, you are in a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of a crazy world. El Monte...

We stayed here three days and two nights. The owner, Tom, was very helpful. He set us up with a taxi that picked us up in our hotel in Quito and returned us the Quito airport for our midnight flight back to the US. It's about 2 - 2.5 hours each way. The lodge is set on a wonderful, extensive...

To get to the lodge you take a hand pulled platform cable car over the Rio Mindo. The property is set in the beautiful Mindo cloud forest. The private cabins are spacious and well laid out. The bird life in the area is amazing. Tom and Mariella are wonderful hosts and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived....

The experience of crossing a swing by the river is great and this is the only place in Mindo that offer it. Cabins housed in the woods promote a feeling of pure nature! They owners who live there gave us a warm feeling of home!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
El Monte Sustainable Lodge is an ecotourism destination in every sense of the word. We emphasize nature here at El Monte, in the form of birdwatching and observation of wildlife in general. Aside from the natural focus of our lodge, we also supply many of the vegetables, eggs and more from our organic garden. Most of our energy is supplied by a microhydro plant. We are located in a 110 acre reserve that is close to the Mindo-Nambillo Reserve of over 40,000 acres. At only 3 kilometers from the town of Mindo we are within access of many the activities, such as the Butterfly Garden, Ziplines, White-water Tubing, waterfalls and more. ... more   less
