We stayed in the house off site which was great for the 4 of us. It is very spacious and comfortable and an idyllic spot with decking overlooking the rainforest. However, there were a few things which would have improved our stay - several of the light bulbs were missing and the in-house phone didn't work making contact with reception... More

Lots of cabins and motel type rooms and backpackers with noisy guests, but the powered sites are away from all this. Good facilities and each site is quite private, but try to choose one with no overhanging tree branches if possible. It rains during the night and the intermittant dripping sound kept us awake for ages. Very close to the... More

We stayed in a motel room. It was clean and tidy, and the staff were very nice. The sink in the bathroom was super tiny and hard to use for things like brushing teeth. It was also very hot but if you had the window open it was noisy as the backpacker accommodation is opposite the motel.

Turning up last thing is the preserve of the nomadic traveller in New Zealand. Not knowing where you are going to put your head down each night is part of the adventure. Having turned up late after a day of staring at a giant piece of ice I found this rightly named rainforest retreat just one street off the main... More

On a group tour, we had an ensuite double and shared a large common lounge and kitchen with the group. All was clean and well equipped. Because this place also serves campers, backpackers, and large (bus) groups, there is little privacy or peace and quiet, but things settle down after dark. The restaurant served hearty meals. Dinner was good; breakfast... More

The Rainforest Retreat is simply one of the best places I have stayed in NZ. When travelling around in a small campervan for a few weeks, this place is outstanding. It has sleeping facilities for literally all needs; from fun dorm areas, to secluded apartments, idyllic campervan spots and Tree house set ups. I have been back a few times... More

I had booked this room as a luxury retreat, as was expected from the advertising on the internet. There were no special huts/houses available for the date I wanted but the park motels still looked really nice and we were offered extras during the stay (free wine and starter at the restaurant which looked very upmarket from the menu we... Wonderfull experience, nice people, friendly staff, good accomodation level, the best in town for sure. The bar, restaurant, breakfast place is also to be recommanded. After a long day driving, the perfect place to stay 2 or 3 nights

This was a last minute booking, so we had no idea what to expect. However, we were pleasantly surprised at the accomodation, service as well as the location. It was bang on the main street, where all the restaurants and tourist centers were. Around it, is peaceful and has breathtaking views of the Glacier. The room itself was a cabin... More

We stayed at Rainforest Retreat in a camper-van, and the van sites are among the loveliest we stayed in on our trip, nestled among the rain forest trees. The reason for the 'average' rating is that I must agree with several negative reviews that the advertising is most misleading. This is not a luxury retreat with van and camping sites... More
