Wanted to spend a weekend of long awaited and needed rest....got right the opposite. Mattress in the room was hard and springs literally stuck into my back so absolutely no sleep. The Mother-in-law did get another mattress in our room. Then upon a return from the river and fall springs mill our room was flooded. Everything soaked and the owners acted angry and rude to us. I will say the Mother-in-law was apologetic but bless her heart shes got some rude childeren!!!
The pool is amazing!!!! Probably 12 feet deep and looks fairly new. Service was good. Very old school. Rooms were old, but seemed clean enough. Really, this is great luck if your near here, because there ain't much else! A.c. is cold, water is hot, the only problem is a lot of drunk people from the river. But, pull up your grill and settle in. Everyone else does. Mind your own business and you will be fine. NO PETS AT ALL. I believe the owner is a don't take no kind of guy. Yes very nice, but not who I would want to push, I don't think.
Think old school with really good service. It's just like we stayed in when we were kids. But it's up to date and clean. Love the pool! Loved our corner room! Rooms aren't big but they are just fine!!
For a smaller town and a smaller property, this was a very pleasant surprise. Very clean rooms, good beds, and the swimming pool is great. About 6 blocks to the Current River and about 4 blocks off Highway 60.
Great spot. Keep in mind the price you pay for a room and the location. Walk to everything in town. Try mid week in the Summer. It's a completely different experience than weekends - peaceful, quiet and more family oriented. The river has fewer boats and floaters. Great store across the street for coffee w free refills, decent breakfast, great lunch, snacks and river provisions. We just returned from our 20th stay. It's not fancy and the air conditioners were recently replaced. Our rooms were very cool, even on hot days.
The Hawthorne Motel at one time was a very nice motel in this quaint little tourist community... but is now dated. The rooms are on the small side, and the furnishings are several years old. The room that I was in had older carpet and a saggy bed. I have talked with some of the other patrons and they said pretty much the same. They are alright, but the value for what you pay....? I know it is supposed to be a 'resort community' but really it is a "Party Community" with a river to keep you cool. You won't be in the room most of the time, you'll be on the river, or sitting at the river park (a parking lot) watching other on the river. So, your room costs are high for what you get.
We had stayed here several years ago and it wasn't very nice but the manager said the were in the process of redoing and renovating the rooms and the motel. If they did do any work they forgot to bring the place out of the 50's. The only newness was the swimming pool. Our room was the best, according to the manager. If so I'd hate to see the worst. Dirty old carpet that was outdated 20 years ago. Rust around the drain in the tub, a tiny bathroom, and the place smelled musty and mildewed. Never again. If we come to Van Buren again, I'd rather put down the rear seats in our SUV and sleep in the car.
Have stayed here almost every summer since I was born. Hasn't changed one bit. Rooms have a home like feel and the staff is always nice to our big group. If you want to experience Van Buren in a real Missouri backwood, hometown feel, I feel this is a great place to stay.
I really wanted to like this motel, I really wanted to have all the quaint and nostalgic quirks that make old locally owned motels charming. Sadly the Hawthorn had none of these. The Pros - They were friendly. Check in was easy and they made sure we had the rooms we needed. Towels - we had lots of towels in the bathroom... The location is great. Right in the middle of town within walking distance to The Jolly Cone and Smalley's Deli and the restaurants downtown. That's pretty much it. The Con's - The price you pay for what you get. We paid $ 90 a night and it was not even really worth half that. If I had paid $ 45 I may not be complaining so much, but for $ 90 I expect more. So let me get started. The place is dirty... not just old and in need of repair (which it needs that also) but is dirty. And this is nothing that a little effort couldn't fix. The front doors were filthy with grime, their were cigarette butts all over the ground, spider webs everywhere and outside lights were filled with old dead bugs... it just needs cleaning... inside and out. The AC unit is not the right size for the room. It is a window unit and it lets the room warm up too much before it kicks in to cool it off. The rooms are poorly maintained - our room had a smashed in wall and no cover over the light. No coffee makers. The curtains - yes they were black to keep out light, no they were not effective. they had no lining and no blinds so the light just shone right through! The bathroom - toilet clogged twice plus the handle had to be held down through the entire flushing cycle - PLUS no shampoo? really no shampoo! cheap, cheap, cheap. No dresser to put clothes in - just a recessed wall with shelves and a TV. Like I said I really wanted to like this place, and for $ 45 I might have... but when you are only a few dollars cheaper than the Hampton, you better at least be clean.…
I've been going to the Hawthorne Motel since I was a kid. Since Teddy S. has bought the place it's a wonderful place to stay. The pool always looks good and clean and Teddy and his staff will help you with anything you need.If you ask real nice he'll cook steaks by the pool and sit around and play guitar with you. :( or you can ask Shuttel BOB ) Anyhow thats where I stay. Very nice time!
