A cozy, yet expansive cabin along the Shenandoah River called "The Captain's Lodge" is a great way for large groups to get away to the mountains and enjoy nature. The lodge is filled with rugged, rustic furnishings inside and great gathering spots located both inside and out. Snake your way down the winding stairs to the bank of the Shenandoah and there is ample space for camping and wading into the cool, clear water of the river (bring water shoes!), along with two picnic tables. Bit by bit, make your way up the 75 steps (I counted them) to the lodge and enjoy a fully furnished kitchen with two fridges and freezers to make yourself a snack. My group stayed at the end of July and although the mountain air kept the outside comfortable, the cold AC at night was very refreshing. Brother and sister, mom and dad, aunt and uncle, this place makes a great getaway for a family reunion. Just be warned, there is no cell reception and the wireless internet is so slow as to be nearly unusable. But with friends and family at your side and so much beautiful nature to get up close and personal with, the Captain's Lodge makes a great place to forget about far away troubles.…
The primitive camping are was the worst I have ever experienced. The sites had tree debri all over. Trees had been cut and logs and limbs were just left where cut. Poison ivy growing on the trees. There is no grass at the river front campsite as pictured on the company’s website. The port-a-johns stunk to high heaven and were out of toilet paper at one point. The bath house was in very poor condition and was not clean. I expected much more for paying $21 per night per person not to mention a one time charge of $20 for each pet. There was 9 of us in our party. The management put all of us in one site. After complaining that we needed more than one site the management agreed to give us the adjacent site to use as well. When we came back from dinner we found that management rented the adjacent site. We wound up sharing one campfire ring among both parties for a total of 13 people. The best part about our trip was the nice people we met and shared the campsite with.…
Fantastic place to unplug from the world and spend time with your family. There is WiFi, but it's weak, however this is not an issue because if you're looking for a high tech vacation you shouldn't be looking for a rustic cabin on the river. The cabin is well appointed, comfortable with books, games, and all of the essentials. The view is perfect. The cabin is centered on a been between two rapids on the river with can water between. This is a perfect spot for stargazing, grilling out, fishing, kayaking, and swimming. The master bedroom has floor to ceiling windows so you can see the hundreds of fireflies light up the trees. Leave your laptop at home and bond with your family in nature.
Great view, great location. Comfortable. Kitchen and baths solid. A few considerations for others who have rented a significant (20+) resort rentals: 1. The sulfur odor of the water is significant and persistent. Unless you live elsewhere in VA and are accustomed to that condition, use bottled water to make your coffee and hold your nose when brushing your teeth. 2. There is no native wi-fi. It is in the house next door. When there were folks next door, access was impossible. We get that one doesn’t go to the mountains to stay connected, but when you have a child who has a college class assignment to complete online, understanding from the owners that there was WiFi and expecting it yet not receiving it was disappointing. He had to drive into Luray to find WiFi. This convenience is pretty much an expectation and installing a repeater or extender could help. 3. The “river” and “handicapped” access is misleading. In the former, one must walk about a tenth of a mile with any river gear in hand to access the river, despite it being in view from the property balcony. There is no handicapped access, at all. The front step is a slab of concrete with no ramp. Seems a simple set of concrete steps down the hill from the property to the river would be a good investment. 4. The bottom level of the property is inaccessible from the upper level, again requiring outside egress. Hauling dishes of burgers and dogs and condiments up and down outdoor stairs (which were picturesque, mind you) because the grill is downstairs is a minor inconvenience, but there is no mention of it in the property literature. 5. When one is on vacation, sleep is a vital necessity so one is ready to jump up and seize the day. The beds are made of stiff, cheap mattresses that provide no comfort. My wife and I tossed and turned every night trying to get comfortable and eventually we took turns sleeping on the couch for relief. 6. The thermostat made no sense. We looked for instructions and finally figured out how to temporarily override the 81F temp that seemed to be the target setting. If we missed the instructions we apologize. 7. Finally, the signs all over the house reminding at every turn about the negative implications of not checking out on time, how the cleaning people get stressed, etc. Simply state the expectation and quit apologizing or seeking sympathy. It was pedantic. With a few improvements, you have a world-class property. We reviewed the comments book in the living room and found comments about those who thought the nearby cowherd were bears, there were flies and ants and bats and bug bites, etc and found no value in them. You are in the mountains and in the country - expect these things and embrace them. Our thought is to place your property anywhere else in the world and think if our suggestions make sense. Thank you for your hospitality.…
My husband and I stayed for our 28th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful time. The home was spacious and beautiful. Very comfortable and every need was met. The owners were extremely accommodating. Can't wait to come back and rent the larger homes for our whole family!
We reserved the Misty River Retreat and Annex with high hopes of family fun and we were not disappointed! Our family of 5, which includes kids ages 4, 6 and 19, all had an absolute blast! One day we explored the Luray Caverns to 260' underground, another day we hiked up Stony Man Trail to the 4000' summit; the views during both excursions were breathtaking. When we were at Misty River we were always in the river, some days from dawn to dusk! We brought 2 kayaks and had loads of fun with them on the river as well as the canoe that was provided. The river was shallow and slow enough that we could walk all the way out and play and swim to our hearts content! Our 6 year old was able to kayak on his own and paddle up stream a ways with no worries. My husband and our 19 year old daughter took the canoe out at 6am our first morning and caught an amazing sunrise over the mountains. Our last night my husband caught perch from his kayak until the sun went down. The kids casted their lines from the shore and canoe any chance they got. Our Aunt and Uncle (who are in their 60s and 70s)along with their dog, stayed in the Annex. They didn't explore with us but explored the nearby towns, restaurants and Skyline Dr. during the day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves as well. Many places had outside seating and provided snacks and water for their dog while they enjoyed lunch. They had a great time relaxing on the shore of the river and taking in the serenity of the river and the view. As for the house itself - the kitchen is fully stocked and all linens are provided, you just bring your food and drinks. There's even ice in the ice trays ready for you! The house is supplied by well water so there's a little bit of odor when you first turn on the faucets. Not a big deal when coupled with the awesome experiences. The Annex is newer and adorable, fully stocked as well with dishes and linens. The hot tub was a hit too, even in the middle of summer. The owner was easily accessible from the reservation process to check in. Someone even stopped by at lunchtime one day to see if we needed anything. The house itself isn't fancy, but if you're looking for the perfect place for Shenandoah River and Mountains family fun, this is your spot! Campfires and s'mores were the perfect endings to our perfect days!…
We stayed at Base Camp with our 15 Boy Scouts and 12 adults from Troop 499 in Redford, MI. There was plenty of space, the facilities were great, and the hosts (Don, Gail, and Ben) were very friendly and a accommodating. We appreciated the kitchen, eating area, 5 bathrooms and 3 showers. Thank you!
I have stayed at The Captains lodge for the past 7 years in a row. We have a large group and the house is perfect. The owners have made many improvements and are a pleasant to work with. The river is perfect for lounging and small fishing, the bigger ones are further down stream. The house has everything you need to cook and grill, and there are really good food options in town. Thanks Gail for hosting us again this year!!
We stayed in the beautifully renovated Eagle's Nest House. The space and accommodations are perfect with large shared areas and a deck overlooking the river. The kitchen is very well appointed allowing easy meal preparation. .
My husband and I stayed 2 nights in April 2016 for our anniversary and it was the most perfect getaway ever. Arriving at the cabin was like coming home, we felt welcome right away. We loved that the Jacuzzi was hot and ready to go as soon as we got there, we dropped our luggage and jumped right in to relax from our travels. The cabin is cozy and we were delighted to find everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare meals. We will definitely be coming back. Misty River Retreat has become our special place.
