Besides the front desk staff and bell men it felt like we were staying in a ghost hotel. We literally just existed. No housekeeping, after a beach day our room was very sandy, they sent up a vacuum for me to do it myself. I come on holidays so I don’t have to cook or clean. Eating off paper plates with plastic cutlery at the restaurant was a turn off. Protests while trying to enjoy the pool, protests while trying to sleep, protests waking my toddler. Really don’t need my 1.5 year old exposed to that yelling and screaming through megaphones. Not. Good. Enough. We cut our stay short as it was so far from a relaxing break. If there’s staff that are protesting for more hours (housekeeping mainly) and guests who want housekeeping daily what is the issue?! Plus getting hassled to sign up for time shares. Gross. Do better Hilton. At Moana Surf Rider now and it’s wonderful.

Hotel's Favourite
Love this hotel - its a little off the main strip but closer to Ala Moana for shopping. There is no beach access, but you don't need it with the epic pools that The Modern has. I will happily spend all day poolside as all their loungers have umbrellas + food service. Can't wait to come back.

We stayed in the Modern Honolulu Hotel and we were very disappointed in the management and services. We were informed on check-in that there would be no housekeeping services while we were there. The front desk advised us that if we needed clean linens or other items to call the desk and they would be delivered to the room. We ran out of coffee pods for the Keurig coffee pot and had to ask for them 3 times before they were delivered then only received 4 pods. We requested more the following day and had to ask for them twice. We asked for clean towels and those were delivered the same day. There were some workers who were protesting by the pool, asking for more hours and better pay and one of the guests stood up and began yelling obscenities and giving them the finger in front of small children in the pool. A security guard was called and just stood there doing nothing. All in all, I think the management of this hotel stinks and needs a crash course in customer service and how to treat their employees and manage bizarre, obscene guests,

I see a lot of talk talk talk and apologies about Hotel condition and housekeeping from Hotel management and appeasement about future with Hilton; but what are you doing now about it? What steps are you taking? And a promise of better housekeeping with maybe agreement with union. When? But what are you doing now about it? And what will it be like over Christmas holidays? What are your plans to improve and what action are you taking now not tomorrow? And why do you still charge a Resort fee when there are issues all over?

We booked the Modern as we had stayed there several years ago and it was fabulous, however, unbeknownst to us, it has been taken over by the Hilton group. Firstly, there was no housekeeping offered during our 3 night stay. We were not given any information about disposal of, so we bagged it up and put it out in the hallway. I had to ask for extra shampoo and conditioner, as only one small bottle of each was provided. The lovely bar area was permanently closed ( under renovation, but actually just abandoned and empty ) the poolside deck chair cushions were absolutely filthy, desperately need replacing. and to add insult to injury, the larger sun lounges were called VIP and you had to pay US$100 to use them!! The poolside restaurant, where we had previously enjoyed lovely lunches, were now serving a limited menu with paper plates and plastic cutlery. This lovely hotel is so diminished in all respects that we will not be returning. So disappointing after expecting it to be as it was several years ago.

Needs a renovation and the carpets gotta go 🤮 . It is a 3star property on a good day. Great location and short walk to beach and Ala Moana. Note - not all rooms have balconies. Request a room away from the elevator.

I stayed at The Modern the first week in October with my mother (I'm 61, she's 81). Here are some things you need to know: 1. The hotel is a timeshare property, with all the pushiness that comes with it. Before we were able to check in, we were met by a young woman brandishing a clipboard who checked off our names and reminded us to get our free welcome gift. Because we were early, we went across the street and had lunch. We returned and were greeted again by the same young woman. After we got our key, I was flagged down...again. Since I'd been up since 6 a.m. for a 10 a.m., five-hour flight to Honolulu, all I wanted to do was go to our room. More on that later. 2. There isn't daily housekeeping. 3. I would hesitate to call The Grove a restaurant. I'd say high-end cafeteria with limited options where the food is brought to you on sturdy paper plates. 4. There are no grab bars in the bathroom. 5. After not wanting to be hassled about my "free welcome gift." I went to the counter. I was asked if I wanted to get $150 off my room (No). "I see you haven't signed up for any activities (No, worked it out before I left home). "We're affiliated with the Hilton! Haven't you heard of the Hilton?!" Wow. Just wow. Because of the location of the elevators, you couldn't avoid walking past the "concierge" desk. After I gave some stink-eye, they left me alone. My free gift was a strand of shells of some kind. Whatever. 6. The beds were really, really low, requiring that I either launch myself or crawl out of bed. 7. The "hotel" was probably very nice when it opened, but now it's dingy. The interior seemed stale. 8. Upon checkout, the clerk did not ask me about my stay. Maybe the word got out that I'm a cranky senior. I've worked in hospitality and customer service for several years. The least you can do is ask a guest about their stay and/or experience. 9. Two things that were great: The hotel staff (housekeeping, valet) were extremely pleasant. The location is also good (Walking distance to a variety of restaurants, the beach, shopping...) In short, it was too poor to mediocre experience for what I paid. If it weren't for the housekeepers, valet staff and location, it would have been a one-star rating.

We stay that the Modern for the ease of the property. It is easy to check in, park, and walk around waikiki. You can walk to the lagoon, or beach. There is plenty of room for everyone without being overcrowded like some bigger properties. You can get to your room without being in a maze of corridors and elevators like most waikiki hotels. The rooms are minimal, spacious and the lanai space is good. The rates are not pretentious, although we do get a local exception. You can rent a cabana bed with onl y the agreement to spend 100.00 on food/beverage, which you will do anyway and have comfort. I always get a cabana and i can tell you the rates can be up to 300.00 for just the space. Staff is pleasant and helpful should you need anything. If you are looking to be on waikiki i believe this will fit anyones needs. You will not have the massive overpopulation of waiting for elevators, check in, or car service, check it out. It’s close to Mall as well which is usually why we come being from outer island.

My husband and I stayed here for 8 days. Staff were very friendly and helpful!! Pool was lovely and just a short walk to the beach. ABC store and several restaurants were very close. Other restaurants and shops were within walking distance. Our room was clean - could do with an update, but I understand this is happening soon. Beds were very, very uncomfortable. Restaurant/pool area could use more variety in their menu. Limited housekeeping - which we didn't mind too much as the staff always responded very quickly when we needed clean towels, extra blankets, etc. Only complaint was we had a beverage spill in our room and when we called to report this and asked for housekeeping to assist, they said housekeeping would clean after we left. Wish it could have been cleaned while we were there. We would stay again (if beds have been updated).

Even though the pool looks great, the rooms of this hotel are dated and the beds are really hard. I did not like that the beds are so low to the ground. There is no housekeeping while your stay, which I did not like as we were there for a week. You have to take out your own garbage outside your door and call for pick up. Even though the beach looks near, its a little far walk (if you have small children) I would stay at a different location next time I visit Hawaii
