Enjoyed our stay. I realize that this is an old, historic location, so the downsides to this stay are not a surprise. When you stay at such an iconic hotel, you have to expect these types of things. But they are worth mentioning, since there...More
This is an old hotel. It was built in 1911-13. The room wing is the oldest part of the hotel. Because of that you can see attempts to update infrastructure but is still and old building...thin walls and floors. They did a major renovation of...More
This was our 3rd winter stay at the hotel. A good point for visiting Lamar Valley in the winter (for me, photography). The rooms are comfortable. Just be aware that in the winter heat is provided by old style radiators. Not easy to regulate, but...More
In August, my husband and I spent a night each in 4 Yellowstone accommodations: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Cabin, Canyon Lodge, Old Faithful Inn, and Grant Village. Mammoth was hands down our favourite. Service was excellent - quick and efficient. A large herd of...More

Roads in the park begin to open in mid to late April. The Yellowstone National Park web site lists April 20, 2018 as the opening date for the West Entrance to Madison, Mammoth to Old Faithful, Norris to Canyon. The road from the North Entrance (Gardiner) to the Northeast Entrance (Cooke City) is open year- round but may close temporarily due to inclement weather and other reasons. This road takes you through Lamar Valley, which affords you an excellent chance of viewing wildlife. Because this road intersects with the Mammoth Hot Springs area, I would have to think you'd be able to walk the boardwalks to view these incredible terraces. Lodging in the park doesn't open up until the end of April, so your best bet for lodging close to the park would be in the town of Gardiner. Even though the road to Old Faithful and the geyser basins on the west side of the park aren't scheduled to open until April 20th, don't give up hope that it's a mild snow season and that they could open up earlier. Also, pack winter clothing as weather can change dramatically there. Even if you can't get to experience all of Yellowstone, what you do experience will leave you yearning to come back. Again, if you haven't done so already, visit the Yellowstone National Park government web site. Have fun on your adventure!
