We flew from the west coast USA and paid for a car from Milan to this place, that we booked months in advance, only to find them closed down with no explanation. The place looked dirty & overgrown and doors all locked with no one answering when we called. The WORST experience you could have when traveling thousands of miles away.

My work colleague and I stumbled upon the Hotel Michelangelo (Arona) this summer when searching for a new place to stay near Milan for a work trip. This hotel is very affordable (~89Euro/ night) and sits right in the heart of the quaint town of Arona, which is right on Lake Maggiore. This hotel/area is a short drive to Milan, Switzerland or any other place you want to visit. Roberto is the owner and is the most gracious and outgoing host! He and his brother run the hotel, which has been in their family for years. Roberto makes the breakfast included in the stay and it is delicious with a variety of foods including grilled veggies, pastries, delicious hard boiled eggs and more and he will make you any variety of coffee/espresso drink you want (He makes great marocchinos). The rooms are very spacious and clean and the water in the shower has great pressure and is as hot as you need. I’ve never had a problem sleeping in the hotel. If you are looking for a more traditional, Italian experience for your stay, this is the place. If you are trying to find it on a booking site, know that he only posts one room available so you may think it’s sold out- but it probably isn’t. Email the hotel directly- Roberto will get it and respond to you! Hotelmichelangeloarona@gmail.com If you see this review and decide to stay here, please tell Roberto that Rebecca and Ingegnere recommended the hotel! Roberto is the chef, concierge, and he’s like a professor of Italian, who is more than happy to help you! I’ve now been here twice and will return the next time I’m in Italy. Enjoy!

Large, good value comfortable rooms. Roberto the owner is charming and chatty and nothing is too much trouble. He can arrange a car and driver to Malpensa or elsewhere for less than the usual taxi rate. Restaurant serves honest food at fair prices, including pizza. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Hotel Michelangelo for 15 days while my husband was on business. Our room was clean and very spacious. Roberto the owner was so friendly and helpful,as was the entire staff. We enjoyed talking with him and learning Italian. Breakfast was wonderful, meets, cheese, cakes, eggs, tiramisu and of course cappuccino. My husband needed to leave early most mornings and Roberto was very accommodating. The hotel is a short walk to the train, bus and ferry. We loved walking along the water, visiting shops, churches and restaurants. We can’t wait to visit again.

Hotel may not be what you expect when you book sight unseen. At first, you think its only a restaurant but there is a hotel entrance just past the outside restaurant seating. I had trepidation when I first arrived but the staff were friendly and the room spacious and clean. The bathroom could do with a makeover though and I did not see an elevator at the hotel so had to manhandle my luggage up the stairs.Nice breakfast with attentive service. Had the evening meal there as well. Not right in the center of Arona but walkable. Limited parking at the back of the hotel. Arona hotels (I've stayed in a few as its handy to Malpensa airport and more interesting than an airport area) are generally not that great but this was probably the best I have stayed in. Recommend.

The hotel was clean and proper. The room was very spacious and there were bathrobes and sandals, which felt very nice extra. But the most important thing, bed, was hard and rough. Breakfast was very tasty and many-sided even the kichen happened to be closed during our visit. We didn't met our host until check-out, but it was obvious that he is a great person and the soul of this hotel. If the bed has been better we would give 4 stars.

We only got to stay one night as it was close to Malpensa airport by taxi. We got a large room that looked like it was meant for 4 people although we were just 2. It was very clean and nicely decorated and the staff was very friendly. Breakfast was included and there were plenty of choices including fresh fruit, tiramisu, cheese, meat, yogurt, juice, coffee, and more. It was an easy walk to the railway station and to the main area of town. We also liked that it was on the quiet side of town. I definitely recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our tour of the Italian lakes. This was the highlight. We had a lovely room which would have put most 4 star hotels to shame. The room was large with separate seating and a lovely bathroom complete with full head power shower. We immediately struck a rapport with the owner Roberto and found out it was a family run hotel with his mother and brother helping out. He certainly broadened our understanding of Italian. The hotel was across the road from a nice beach/lido area with a promenade along the front. There is a beautiful square in Arona and the statue of San Carlos on the outskirts is another must see. Not as pretty a town as Stresa 10 miles North but it was easy enough to drive up there. We eat here both nights primarily because we enjoyed the company and we were rewarded with great Italian food at very reasonable prices. Overall we want to come back and are already looking at a trip back next year. Grazie mille for a fantastic time. Only down side zanzare (mosquitos) bring plenty repellant although being Scottish they are still not as bad as the highland midge !!
