This is truly a beautiful and special place to stay! The staff was wonderful and our room (Terrace View Suite) was lovely, although be advised that the walls are very thin (you can hear your neighbor blow their nose and carry on a conversation even at quiet talking levels). The grounds and view are exquisite, (breathtaking) and the spa looked fantastic (I regret not scheduling a spa day!) The location made a great base to explore all of Tuscany, with most towns and sites we wanted to see within a 10 - 90 minute drive. We would NOT recommend dining at La Terrazza (it was pretty horrible - the worst food I recall having in years dining out) but they do have a Michelin starred restaurant, Il Pievano worth considering. Overall I would stay here again, but perhaps request the Terrace View Suite on the end so that we only had one shared wall, to keep the noise down!

Hotel's Favourite
We’ve just returned from a fabulous 7 day stay at the Castello di Spaltenna and have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful hotel. The building is beautiful but one must remember that it’s nearly 1000 years old; it has more character than you can imagine and was obviously not built with some of the luxuries that some may expect in a typical 5* hotel eg. There’s no lift, obviously, and we counted 77 steps from the pool up to our room 6 - great exercise! The pool (and the view from it) is one of the best we’ve ever seen. It may be cold to start with but just get in and swim, it’s worth it, all 20+ metres of it! We were very happy with our Deluxe room. It was a good size and the view was fantastic. A slight negative was that you could sometimes hear the neighbours in their bathroom, particularly at bedtime. All staff, without exception, were extremely polite and attentive and all spoke English. Though we had very basic Italian to show willing.. Regarding the food at the hotel.. - Breakfast (buffet) was excellent. Plenty of cereal, pastries and fruit to choose from. Also bacon, sausages, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon etc. Eat as much as you like. - Lunch and dinner was fine. Possibly our only little criticism was that the menu for lunch and dinner was the same and quite limited. There were 3 starters, mains and deserts and seeing that same menu twice a day for a week forces you to go elsewhere, which is a good thing. The walk to the village was down a steep hill from the hotel; 6 minutes down, 10+ mins back up. In the village (Gaiole in Chianti), there are a number of restaurants which also served good food at half the price of the hotel and with a much larger choice. They certainly solved the issue of limited choice at the hotel. So in summary, it’s a fabulous hotel with beautiful views and wonderful staff and we very much look forward to returning.

I had dinner with Amici and I would say that we had an experience out of the usual canons. Dishes well executed and balanced in taste. The room directed by the MAITRE Angelo I would say in a masterful way, where he immediately puts you at ease with discretion and professionalism Well done everyone, thank you for this experience. Highly recommended.

The views from the old monastery are unmatched in my opinion. We had the "tree House" suite at the top of the tower, beautiful room, walls 2 ft thick, old wooden shutters on windows, fantastic- no elevators, bed hard as a rock. Breakfast on terrace was lovely. I would not suggest the Michelin star restaurant, pretentious and small bits of artsy food was terrible and not at all what we had in mind for 333 Euros with one bottle of wine, the head waiter Angelo was very uptight and downright weird. Go to the other restaurant in the wine cellar- classic italian dishes, beautiful setting. Vince and Marco at the desk were wonderful, Ahmed at breakfast was great. Baggae handles from Cortona was very friendly. The place is beautiful! Don't bother with the TV, no signal the entire time we were there.

My husband and I had a wonderful time at this location. A perfect spot for both relaxing and exploring the wine regions surrounding Gaiole. We loved dining outside on the terrace every day. We spent time at the pool (only thing management should look at it is some candles or another way to handle the bug situation by the pool). We chose the moderate option for dining and not the Michelin and it was delicious. We also walked down in to town from the castle a few nights for different dining options. One major thing to note is that there are no elevators so you'll need to be able to handle stairs getting to and from the breakfast and pool areas. We met people from all over the world and even dined with them in town one night. The views are magical and the staff was great!!!

We booked this hotel last minute and ended up with the most amazing room in a stunningly beautiful place. I have never woken to a more beautiful view. The service was excellent. The pool was a treat in 38 degree weather. I am so hopeful that we can return with friends.

Beautiful historic building on a hilltop a few mins from Gaiole. The hotel is sympathetically restored to a high standard. Service throughout the hotel was excellent, the very specific guidance on parking in Siena was v helpful and considerate. The hotel has lovely outside space where you can enjoy the location and views, including the pool area and outside terrace. Unfortunately during our two night stay the weather was temperamental, with a few showers, so we didn’t fully get the enjoy the pool area and the terrace was closed for breakfast and lunch on one day. The spa is adequate, but then you don’t come to Tuscany to sit inside in a spa! We ate in both the casual and Michelin restaurants. As you’d expect the Michelin restaurant is expensive, but it was a very memorable and enjoyable experience. As other reviews remarked the menu in the casual restaurant is limited, but it’s a relatively small hotel so that’s to be expected, and all food was v enjoyable (especially the tiramisu).

One thousand years old, yet provided with all the comforts. Infinity pool is worth alone a stay in this castle. Well equipped gym to keep the youngsters busy while us adults were sipping a glass of Chianti in the terrace. Best breakfast we had in Italy, by far. Didn’t have much scheduled in advance so we had to completely rely on the reception staff to book our tours and tastings, special thanks to Vincenzo who went above and beyond, Bravo! We’ll definitely be Back.

Gorgeous place and grounds. Breakfast buffet was amazing and kids loved the pool table. However, given the price point we only received complimentary water on the first night which was disappointing. When we asked for a children’s menu it had pasta and a butter sauce for €18. Our kids ended up eating the pasta wild boar ragú for €20 off the adult menu as we thought it was a better option. There was hardly any meat in the ragu - which we all had! Disappointing. Could do with having more variety for children for their menus. Spa was ok but the mosaic tiles were coming off the seats in the steam room. The place just needs a little more TLC.

Really cool venue from ages past. Alas it impacts experience. Air conditioning was weak. Bed mattress was horrendous. My wife did not sleep well at all. Grounds are gorgeous but tired. Pool is nice but sporadic pool beverage service. Gym is closet sized so do not expect anything worthwhile. Tennis court and rackets were a joke. Uneven and balls were flat. Spa does not even have AC. Owners could really make it good with some investment. Main restaurant menu is same for both lunch and dinner -I mean seriously? Walk into town if you are looking for food. Recommend you stay in Radha or Grieve. Two nights was more than enough.

Response from alessandro ercolani, Direttore generale at Castello di Spaltenna Exclusive Tuscan Resort & Spa
Responded 30 Jul 2023
Dear Charles, we would first like to thank you for staying at Castello di Spaltenna and choosing to share your experience. We are sorry that you did not appreciate our services and the facilities. However, we would like to point out some of the information reported and in particular: The air conditioning system works regularly. Unfortunately during your stay in Italy there were exceptionally high temperatures. The quality of our mattresses is checked annually and worn ones are replaced; Sincerely we do not understand why called gardens 'tired'. Gardeners tend gardens with love and passion. Pool Bar service is available every day from 11 am to 6 pm; As well as all the beautiful and unspoiled nature that surrounds Castello di Spaltenna where one can do as much physical activity as one desires, our Gym measures 25 square meters and is equipped with modern cardio fitness; The tennis court is regular. At the receptions desk are available rackets and balls; The spa center is air-conditioned in the relaxation area. Obviously, the hot humid area (sauna, turkish bath, tepidarium, emotional showers and the whirlpool tub) cannot be conditioned; Castello di Spaltenna offers three different restaurants: form lunch La Terrazza; for dinner Il Pievano (one Michelin star) and L'Osteria (casual and traditional). The menus are completely different. Hoping to have you as our welcome Guest again, we remain. Alessandro Ercolani General Manager
